This track is a perfect reminder to why sometimes less is more. It seems when games go 'big budget' that means a lot of money has to be spent on everything including the soundtrack but, electronic and synthesized music is very powerful in the right places and gives that eerie otherwordly sense that "epic full orchestra because LOOK AT OUR FUCKIGN BUDGET!!" just never achieves.
@InnuendoXP I believe it has more to do with the composition. There are a few titles out there which have great music, but I find so many titles have bland, uninspired background music which needs a lot of instruments to make up for it.
I don't know if it's that so much. There's a lot of bland game music out there which would've sounded a lot better with a lot less done to it.
It's like topping a pizza... you can have very high quality ingredients but adding more than a few of them doesn't necessarily make it better. When you lose the flavour of each individual ingredient in the mess then it makes it a lot worse despite more being put into it.
Also keep in mind that putting loads of toppings on pizza is an American thing, the italians use a weaker flour with less Gluten so their dough cannot handle so many toppings.
I usually only use 3 or less toppings, not counting the cheese. (80/10/10 mozzarella/Provolone/parma blend.) because it can become to busy with a hundred different toppings, the one exception being deepdish.
I tend to blend more of a 40/40/20 of mozarella/cheddar/parmesan for my pizza cheese.
But yeah I agree, though it depends sometimes. I tend to keep it centred around 3 main complimentary ingredients also, but there are certain things like dried herbs or chilli flakes which I do not count among the three
You can't have more than a few big flavours, the more you add the more you're taking away really. But something like feta, olives, rocket, red onion and red bell pepper is delicious
I doubt games this good will ever be made again. Too many kid gamers these days want that instant action, CoD/Halo, ADHD crap. And that's who devs are catering to. Not much can compare to spending a couple minutes listening to this music, approaching your first objection, knowing that shit is about to hit the fan. And hoping to God you're the one throwing the shit, since you really had no idea what was gonna be thrown at you, or how many enemies would be throwing it.
I agree completely. Developers don't have the courage to make games unforgiving these days.
I remember back in the day that when you got to the later levels, even when you had learned the ropes the difficulty kept ramping up and it felt like a STRUGGLE. You felt a sense of dread going in, and the elation of achievement coming out.
Though the odd gem such as The Void come round now and then.
And Halo is actually pretty good.. well, the original one. The sequels lost the magic :/
Must be fifteen years since I played this game. But I hear this, and I can still remember running my firemoth at top speed across the deserts of Colmar, jumping to the top of the dune and seeing the Jade Falcon base below me, then opening fire.
Holy crap. It's been so damn long since I played this game (I was like 7) and while I pretty much forgot all the music, I STILL REMEMBER THIS SONG PERFECTLY.
OMG awesome song! I have such fond memories of my brother playing this game and us listening to the music. Thanks SO much for posting! May the Force be with you.
@bwilliams2049 Its been a while (a few months) since I've played the campaigns so I think you may be wrong... Then again it was a few months so I may be wrong... :\
this one is huge for me, its the only one i recognized....i just went through 1-11 just to find it, because i had the song in my head. i remember this being the music of the first stage, wher eyou drive the timberwolf. i used to play this on my gateway 2000, i was in 5th grade, and 9 years old. those pizi strings, ill never forget, or that synth backing track. wow.
@CrazyEnzo03 It is greatly unwise to pilot a Timber Wolf in this mission, since this is the very first Wolf missions, and there is a weight limit of 65 tons (or maybe even 60, I don't remember). You *could* pilot a Timber Wolf if you made a custom variant for it weighing only 65 (or 60) tons, but it would be incredibly stupid to do so, considering that the Timber Wolf is intended to be a 75 ton chassis -- not to mention that Pyre Light is an extremely easy mission anyhow.
Weird how people remember hearing this on a dessert lvl when i always remember it being an ice lvl. dont recall there being a jukebox option either,, could be wrong...
If I remember correctly, there was a glitch on the dire wolf. If you set the mech for minimum armor/heat sinks and maximum ER-PPCs, you'd get around 8 (I don't remember the exact number). If you fired all of your PPCs simultaneously, the mech would shut down (expected), but after starting up again, the game would glitch and you'd have no more overheating problems.
damn this is nostalgic....i remember mechwarrior 2 was my first PC and fully 3D game...It was also a game i played during one Christmas of the 90s...I had the volume at full blast...and people were wondering what on earth i was playing, since before then it was games like Mario Bros. on the SNES!
How the fuck I loved this song as a child. Remembering well... It's the first song i've ever loved back when I was REALLY young. I remember the desert and all, this was a great game for it's time. Thanks for memories.
What GlennnD said. This song has the strongest memories of mine attached to it. The dropship zooming away as the opening notes of the song perfectly matched the shifting desert sands around my little Mech. This song accompanied by that level gave me the biggest grin I had in a long time.
One cool thing.. in those days i left my Mechwarrior CD in my Drive. And played Settlers 2.... and it just played the Mechwarrior tracks that was pretty hilarious =)
Wasnt this the tune that played on the Lv1 of the Wolf missions? just about the only tune I remebered cuz the first lvl was about as far as I ever got hahaha...
omg so much nostalgia

What's even more weird is the fact that the first five seconds of the next song always wind up at the end of the track.

@InnuendoXP I have to disagree about pizza - I tend to think that a pizza with only a couple toppings tends to be a bit bland. ;)
jadetraveler 1 month ago
@jadetraveler
Depends what those toppings are.
If your sauce sucks, your vegetables are not fresh or you just put on meat and no seasoning, it's probably going to be bland.

"Enemy powerup... DETECTED"
"Autopilot... DISABLED"
"Groupfire... ENGAGED"
PPC's, fire. Switch to LRM. Wait for the tone, fire.
Duck behind that sanddune. Increase speed, closed to MLAS range.
Check your six for his buddy, reaquire target, pop up over the dune.
Withering linkfire from 4 medium pulse lasers, lop off his left leg.
"Heat Level... CRITICAL" S'ok.
Run around behind him. Might use his one-legged torso for cover. Might just unload on his other leg.
