Desmond saw in his Vision, that Charlie must dive to the Underwaterstation, deactivate the Jamming Transmitter and then he will drown. So Jack can send a emergency call, and then there will come a Helicopter and claire and aaron get into the helicopter and they fly home. Then mercenaries infiltrate the island, they kill a lot of people, claire disappears and Aaron is leaving the island with Kate. Finaly: MISSON FAILED

Charlie's not dead, it would have been impossible for him to drown in that room, as soon as the water got to the top of the window the air in the room could not have escaped ( des shut the door ) so there would have been a air pocket. Skool boy error by the production crew I think!

Lots of people have said that and its true that the water shouldnt have gone so high, but even if they had got it right and stopped the water, leaving an air bubble, the air doesnt have an infinite supply of oxygen. Charlie would suffocate in minutes

Yes, he couldve escaped death. Infact he couldve walked through the door and stood next to Desmond. But Des said him dieing saved everyone and he saw Claire and Aaron leaving(probably confused Kate with Claire, dumb*ss). He died to save everyone. To save Aaron. And to save Claire.
