for some reason i really like these old volvo ads. maybe because my grandpa owes his life to one of these cars (i'm not just assuming because it's a volvo, i know for a fact that no other car from '78 would have survived a t-bone at 60 km/h from a van)
The best $23k anyone could have spent on a car back then! I live in Georgia and see these old 740s driving around still. My Mom bought an '89 740 Turbo wagon in 2001 with 138k miles and sold it in 2004 with 224k miles. No engine or transmission problems at all, which is amazing because she drove that car hard and was terrible keeping up with the maintenance (oil changes every 7k miles, eating through tires every 20k, etc). I wish Volvo would go back to making cars this good.
Agreed. It's sad to say, but I'd consider a new Hyundai Sonata, Azera, or Genesis these days before a new Volvo S60 or S80. Volvo quality is bad now and their cars aren't any better than anyone else.
Let's look at it from my point of view or a minute. Hyundai is scoring at or above quality and reliability levels of Honda and Toyota. Volvo is scoring quite low. I've read so many complaints from people about their transmissions going bad around 100k miles, electrical bugs, and interior finishes scratching off. I drive a 2006 Kia Optima (same as Hyundai Sonata) and I can tell you that I'm having better reliability with the car than some newer Volvo owners are having with theirs.
yea i know about all the electric bugs and what not, but damn i still would get a volvo over a hyundai or kia any day...hopefully ford will sell them to a good company so they can get back on track
and i wouldn't buy a hyundai, the current accent scores a "poor" in the IIHS t-bone test even with side-curtain airbags (impossible bad score with these) and the sonata from a couple years ago apparently got a poor on the offset test, so i would rather just get a honda and have the car they were trying to imitate, but safer lol
People who think Hyundai/Kia are still junk are stuck in the past. Times have changed. Hyundai/Kia are rating tops in safety and reliablity...for less money! Honda and Toyota are becoming the Rolex of family brands. It's a name brand that people THINK is fantastic, but the quality isn't as great as the reputation suggests.
Great safety, no. The worst safety, no. Sonata got "good" for frontal and "acceptable" for side test. There are more expensive and larger cars that didn't even do this well in all the tests as Sonata. Sonata/Optima were rated among the best for rear crash protection (whiplash) due to standard active head restraints.
i'm thinking of the previous sonata, changed in '06 (i'm on the IIHS site now)
poor for side, and the late 90s one got poor for front and the '09 accent got poor for side with all airbags, lame
"Driver — Measures taken from the dummy indicate that rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries plus a fracture of the pelvis would be likely in a crash of this severity. In addition, loading to the shoulder was excessive."
almost all cars with side-curtain bags get acceptable or good
anyways i don't hate hyundai's, but their safety is worse than current hondas and VWs and the same as some toyotas that don't even have curtain bags so are a bad comparison. basically 90% of cars with side-curtain bags are safer than the '09 accent which i find lame
in all fairness, i agree that hyundai's are just as reliable, but i'd spend another few grand and get a honda and basically have a better and safer version of a hyundai
Hyundai's safety isn't the best. I'm not saying it is. But you gotta realize there are other cars that do worse than Hyundai. Hyundais actually are doing better in rear tests than most Hondas. I think the Sonata/Optima has the highest rating for rear test due to better headrest and bumper designs. So Honda is not totally superior. I would expect they should be for $4k more. That's insane.
alright you got me there, didn't see the rear test. you're right, it's super lame that all cars today don't do well in those. i still wouldn't buy the new accent tho because of the bad rating. i can't afford a new car anyways but i'm just saying.
I hear ya. I can't afford a new car either. When I was shopping for a newer used car, I considered the Accent but passed on it because of the low safety ratings and the fact that I could get an Optima of the same year and mileage for a similar price. Much safer car and much nicer to drive. So glad I didn't get the Accent, although I do like it.
The Genesis coupe IS sweet! I checked them out in person at the dealership. It's strange though, the shape looks very different in person. Much more angular, especially the front end which is extremely wide, low and pointed, sorta like a Corvette's nose
the 2006-2010 accent gets "poor" for IIHS side impact, i'd post a link but it doesn't let me. look on IIHS's official site and look up hyundai accent, i just did 5 seconds ago to double check!
pretty sad for a car with side-curtain airbags. hyundai's are ok, but they are being too cheap still in some situations.
fuck hyundai they are cheap shit with no souls and they copy from other brands

does anyone know how fast theese cars went at actual speed?
thobbus 1 year ago
@thobbus At best you'd do 0-62 mph/100 kmh in 9.5-9.7 seconds (with the 165 bhp turbo) and with a top speed of about 138 mph/220 kmh. I think.
norra124 1 year ago
@norra124
But how fast in the Crast test?? thanks for the top speed on the cars :)
thobbus 1 year ago
@thobbus oh it's usually about 50 kmh / 32 mph or maybe 70 kmh / 45 mph

Is there still a rear crumple zone in a 740 station wagon?
I would kinda hope so. It would ease out a crash..
IGP06LOCKDOWN 2 years ago
Yep, they had crumple zones. although many other cars did not.

look up the IIHS ratings for the new accent on their website (can't post it caue youtube will block my post) just google "IIHS"
and the last gen sonata did really badly too which was disapointing
they have good quality, but not that great safety
