He's a real talent, and no, he's not Cziffra, he's Adam Gyorgy, and I think it's an immense honour to be asked to play at Carnegie Hall for the 200th anniversary of Liszt...I've met Adam when he played in our city, and he was warm, kind, and totally floored me with the intensity and emotion depth, as he lives this material.

@stellartunes He is definitely one of the most exciting young Liszt pianists. He has spectacular technique but also plays with an impeccable musical sense. An amazing talent!

@silverbud that's dumb as fuck. Why? Cziffra plays this amazing don't get me wrong, but so does Gyorgy, he plays slower and with different emphasis but that's the beauty of different pianists displaying their own unique interpretation. Gyorgy plays with great emotion and the fact that Cziffra's is more popular doesn't make Gyorgy any less talented. If you or I could play as well as this pianist I guarantee we would both be overjoyed.
@reddawnsky dude, it's his opinion, only an idiot comment on someone else's opinion, who cares about what you think bout richter and cziffra? Don't go chasing after someone else's words
@Nuramon345 Thats funny cuz Adams video has over 79,000 views and when you look at Cziffra's he has over 86,000. And since your probably gonna view it now, you just contirbuted to the views as well.
@DmasterQuIFF57 Hey man, skill has nothing to do with view count. Liberace was pretty damn popular but did that make him a better pianist? I for one think comparing world-class professional pianists is like comparing supercars, sure it's kind of fun but it doesn't matter, they're on a whole other level. Though I have to say, this performance is clean as hell.
All y'all talk like you know so much about piano, but none of you know nothing at all. This guy learnt how to think of the way to play it, he care on his touch and the sound that comes out, it's not about how fast you play, it's keeping the tempo and the beat together, but most of all is still knowing about yourself on the piano, then you can control yourself to do whatever you want on it. Control the sound and the touch so it is good. Get it homie? It's about you playing , not the piece itself.
@adamgyorgyfranzliszt its either you all or all of you. all ya'll is not necessary. none of you know nothing is a double negative none of you know anything is the right way to go.he can't learnt to play a piano. he Learned. other than that i agree with you 100 % there has to be a connection between the piece and the pianist playing it, otherwise it would never sound right.
i played this piece yesterday in a concert... i wish it would have sounds like this and it would have been this fast... he plays it amazing ! and you understand it even more if you know the piece ... it is first of all really hard technic and it is mentally hard because of it think 4 or 5 time key changes!
@chutdigadut OMG I agree! The reason the name is so fitting for the piece, so quick, so naughty, so cute, all symbolic of Dancing Gnomes.... Liszt was truly a prodigy!
And this video was WIN by the way, I really appreciate videos that pay attention to a pianists hands/fingers instead of their face or background.
freaking glorious. He captures perfectly the subtly mechanical nature that I believe this song was meant to display, and every single solitary note is enunciated beautifully. Bravo bravo bravo, genius.
I agree that he could interpret it a little more freely, but still a great performance. I'm playing this piece right now and it's pretty difficult at some parts.
He certainly is a great virtuoso --- no doubt about that. It's wonderful to behold.
But check out Guiomar Novaes' 1923 recording posted here on YouTube. The sound is a little scratchy, but the ARTISTRY is incomparable. Novaes gives off an aura of sheer MAGIC that transcends mere brilliance.
technically brilliant. but agree, that there's no interpretation in that. I tried to learn to play this piece, it's hard (I'm not profesional) but it gives a lot fun.
I had read that he was made a Steinway Fellow several years ago. I believe he is one of 54 who have that signal honor. He almost always seems to be having a truly great time when performing.
His recording of 'la campanella' in 2003 was the best I've yet heard.
Good question. I'm not sure about about "free pianos", but Steinway makes sure that he has either a model "D" or "C" available for concert appearences. A model "D", in standard ebony, runs close to $200,000, and those with custom finishes can run easily twice as much.
i hear a fazioli can go for $300,000. Say whats the big difference between all these highend pianos? Bosendorfer, Schimmel, Grotrian, Fazioli, Steinway blah blah blah
There are some technical differences, but mostly it's a personal preference. My mother used to have a Schimmel, but she always wanted a Steinway. She never got it. Instead, my Father bought her a large model Baldwin organ. He LOVED to listen to ANYTHING on the organ....even if it were only 'chopsticks'.
He is (in my estimation) simply the best of all the current crop of young pianists at anything by LIszt. I've never heard anyone play 'La campenella' any better...not even Cziffra.
@kylelandry Holy Sh*t WHAT A COINCIDENCE. My friend posted this to see what piece he was playing. and I see Kyle Landry's comment here O.o My favorite Pianist on youtube :D
u can't say this is better than cziffra simply because it is clearer, cziffras version is no much older, and cziffra was so practiced at playing liszt, his interpretation matches the lisztonian mood so much more, thats not to say, gyorgy presents here a truly fantastic technical performance, bravo
he should probably be very good by no, six years later, so i hoped he can this better next time, even though i must say it is a good performance, he still managed to make some mistakes in one of his other performances, otherwise, congrats
i have to agree pabeet, technically, his performance is great, but musically, it somehow falls flat. a quite dull performance. i feel like he was just playing the notes.

pabeet seems to be a superior critic, but Gyrogy is a superior musician. He's also one of only 54 Steinway Fellows...which places him in rarified company, such as; Rubenstein, Horowitz, and only a handful of other superior talent.

Learning this now, its difficult to actually know what notes you are playing at times, because of the extremely rapid pace of some of the sections. I had to stop learing it a while ago as I could not manage the part towards the end with the hands together runs. Think 2:34-2:37 I could not get the notes to match up exactly, very annoying, dont know if I can now to be honest.
Dude, it took me like five months to nail down that part... but I managed in the end, so I'm sure you can do it, as my talent is only average at best.
I've been studying this score because my teacher has assigned it to me and I'm very worried for this part... what would you say helped facilitate you the most on this part?
god just imagine the stress that dude is going through. He probably just got finished with probably an entire like level 10 piano concerto and then the audience is like WE WANT MORE. so he has to dish them out another grade ten piece ALL BY HIMSELF. that SUCKS. You know. no orchestra to drown out your mistake. god that sucks.
its a figure of speech meaning like super hard to do. INCredibly difficult idk. you know how lots of stuff like the max is level 10 kind of stuff? well yeah thats what i mean here
I agree with some of you. Arrau in this tempo is unsurpassed, but particularly in this piece Cziffra achieves something more, perhaps Arrau's performance is the classic one and Cziffra's is the modern one.
In any case this guy is closer to that great masters, maybe with time he would gain a more deep understanding of what he is playing, Arrau himself began playing too fast and too bright.
Tempo wise about the same of Arrau but lacks Arrau's tone and colour. Cziffra's still unbeaten in my opinion. I think Gyorgy lacks the excitment that you get from Cziffra's interpretation.
It's funny that many comments praise Gyorgy, even though this pianist ignores many of Liszt's own pedal markings, especially in the first motif. Gyorgy also fails to convey any excitement or tasteful Romantic rubato; Cziffra's YouTube recording of this piece, on the other hand, is incredibly exciting, beautiful, and much more masterfully Romantic and elegant than this recording here.
That was fantastic.

I like to play this on the organ with a slight bossa nova tempo behind it - gives it a real lift -

Brilliant!!!
I love his smile...

2:05->2:36 is fantastic!
stekal79 3 years ago
i like his tempo choices :D
pianogurly 3 years ago
Tempo wise about the same of Arrau but lacks Arrau's tone and colour. Cziffra's still unbeaten in my opinion. I think Gyorgy lacks the excitment that you get from Cziffra's interpretation.
jero13595 3 years ago
totally agree with you
bye
uneanisa 3 years ago
feels like he's studying. Actually the tempo isn't rushed and that's a good point- but I still prefer Cziffra's record (Caused NOT on the speed)
Sacramentum2 3 years ago
u could tell hes very very nercous cause his face smiles and desnt smile and yeah. but on 50 he doesnt get nervous after that
goldenblade212 3 years ago
not my favourite interpretation of Gnomenreigen.
But then again, who can beat Cziffra's anyway!
murraytaylor123 3 years ago
in my opinion the piece and the performance are very great

His looks remind me a bit of Glenn Gould.

I agree with some things in his perfomance but I Don't agree in some... some pieces are god but some not... for me ...
NiiiinOoOo 3 years ago
i am with you there in agreeing with some bits and not others... like i felt the opening was a bit dry but i liked his tempo
richardpacyisgod 3 years ago 2
the tempo is perfect

too slow!

I think slow our grandmather - this interpretation is very good. Its not horse competition - only dance
geor123456 3 years ago 2
i think it's steinway and sons
mariusdav 4 years ago
It's funny that many comments praise Gyorgy, even though this pianist ignores many of Liszt's own pedal markings, especially in the first motif. Gyorgy also fails to convey any excitement or tasteful Romantic rubato; Cziffra's YouTube recording of this piece, on the other hand, is incredibly exciting, beautiful, and much more masterfully Romantic and elegant than this recording here.
streek23 4 years ago
Cziffra plays too fast for me.
I personally like this recording more.
Why can't people have their own opinions regardless how well a song is played?
sjoecool1991 4 years ago
...? These ARE our opinions!
theheadplate 4 years ago
I know, streek is saying everyones opinions are stupid.
sjoecool1991 3 years ago
Completely agree - Cziffra played this piece beautifully and effortlessly.

I'm sceard, cause my tacher gave me this peace! It Is GREAT! I LOVE THAT BOY!!! :))
NiiiinOoOo 4 years ago
I am not near up to that level yet, but I love this song to death.
Good luck.
PS: my teacher just gave me Grand Sonata Pathetique.
sjoecool1991 4 years ago
pathetique should be fun... i'm learning the gnomenreigen myself, those damn scales right before the coda are freakin hard to get in sync.
vaelrix 3 years ago
Yeah, but I had only played piano for about 3 years, and then quit for 1 1/2 years.
sjoecool1991 3 years ago
do you know where I could grab a score of gnomenreigen? or would it possible for you to send me a copy :)
shanghaipupy 3 years ago
Great performance ! I saw a glimmer of a ST ,so I imagine it's a Steinway.
