I was a welfare caseworker for the state of Oregon. NOBODY would starve without food stamps. The problem is that the only people who call it "SNAP" are educated and not on the program. Go to the areas that are on the program and you will not hear even one person use that term over foodstamps or ebt.

I'll never forget my High School english teacher, who cured a big chunk of my racism. She said sarcastically "I just love it when someone says to me that in general they think black people are stupid, but you, you're all right". It pointed out the fact that claiming to have a black friend doesn't mean you can't be a racist jerk, and fixed a major hole in my ethics. Newt, evidently, didn't have an awesome english teacher. Or he didn't notice, because he was busy with the geometry teacher.

What's really, really sad and pathetic is that many of the white southern voters who are supporting Gingrich receive some sort of Federal govt. support - including food stamps. Yes, they do vote against their economic interest. What they are really beholden is the underlying pernicious racial populism that Gingrich is exploiting.
This is a modern version of Jim Crow. Politicians can shine a negative light on anything no matter how good, benign, or bad, if they associate it with black people.

@FlatulenceFox I honestly don't know how effective that would be if it's even true. I don't like Gingrich, but I wonder how prevalent racism is in mainstream America today. Racists are surely a minority and a small one, you'd think. Look at any white media figure or entertainer that uses anything close to a racial epithet. They usually get fired for it if they use it in a genuine context. I don't think this kind of talk helps politicians on a national stage.

@hallavast I don't expect everyone to agree with that statement because whether or not you see that depends a lot on where you or your family is from, what color you are, and what you may or may not know about history in the Southern US. I don't expect everyone automatically understand the importance of nuanced language, especially when it comes to Southern style of race baiting politics.
And I am obviously not talking about national politics. This won't work as well outside of Dixie.

Given that Newt Gingrich is trying to reach out to Republicans and Tea Partiers in the South I'm betting this was probably meant to have a racial undertone. The Republican Party has employed the "Southern Strategy" for every Presidential election starting with Barry Goldwater.

@tehdouglas1 - Where did I say people are racist for disagreeing with me? It's a pretty well-known fact that a lot of racists did migrate to the Republican Party from the 1960s-early 1990s. Of course there are many racists in the Democrat Party as well, but the Republican Party has made appealing to anti-minority racists part of their election strategy. The Democrats (non-Dixiecrats) largely stopped trying to appeal to that crowd yes from the 1940s onward.
