People relax. Zephrynix pretty much went over board. He said this was going to have a drastic effect on the PS3 and he was simply wrong. So far it's LG that got screwed over cause the court sided with Sony. All the seized PS3's had to be returned over two weeks ago and any day it went over the deadline LG must pay $290K per day. So in the end it was LG that got screwed.

I find it EXTREMELY unlikely Sony will have to sell off their internally owned studios. Sony wont compromise the first party studios, they know they're to valuable. If this does happen I see it affecting second party partners.

back in january 2010(over a year ago) the blu ray's in ps3's costed about $66 to implement when they were still losing money each ps3($27 each ps3)
In Q3 of 2010 they said that they finally profit on each ps3 so that would mean the cost to make ps3's dropped MORE than $27.which would also mean that the blu ray(that LG is targeting) would have had to drop to atleast about $60-$55
Sony already sued them & banned a certains LG phones from leaving Japan. That's why LG is doing this in the first place. Sony wanted to play hardball & LG said they were game, basically. Now Sony has to suffer.
Something similar happened a few years ago regarding rumble technology. Sony managed to settle things with Immersion, but it may not work out like that for them this time.
As a fan of gaming, this sucks because it puts a serious dent in Sony's pockets, limiting their ability to compete, giving Microsoft the advantage(and less incentive to push themselves), and basically screwing us all over.

In Q3 of 2010 they said that they finally profit on each ps3 so that would mean the cost to make ps3's dropped MORE than $27.which would also mean that the blu ray(that LG is targeting) would have had to drop to atleast about $60-$55

they both infringe on each other but LG infringed almost twice as much as sony did though
now i know the ps3 is profitting by like $5 each ps3 so if LG fully win's Sony would be back losing a good $10 before production values drop.
and at the same time LG would have to pay sony even MORE than what sony would have to pay LG
so why the hell would they sell ANY of there companie's when they've been in worse situation's losing over $250 on ps3's at 1 point??

Sony already sued them & banned a certains LG phones from leaving Japan. That's why LG is doing this in the first place. Sony wanted to play hardball & LG said they were game, basically. Now Sony has to suffer.

Something similar happened a few years ago regarding rumble technology. Sony managed to settle things with Immersion, but it may not work out like that for them this time.
As a fan of gaming, this sucks because it puts a serious dent in Sony's pockets, limiting their ability to compete, giving Microsoft the advantage(and less incentive to push themselves), and basically screwing us all over.
Fanboys don't understand that when one company fails, we all still lose out.

if they do shut down psn for good, you can bet i'll be hacking my ps3... though for all we know now it could all just be over exaggerated. we don't know whether Sony will settle with lg out of court or if the courts will even agree with lg. we also don't know how much Sony would be willing to invest to fund continuing Playstation.

@Persistantthug Sony doesn't just do games, they have other departments of consumer products. Each department must have its own budget. So if they do end up losing to LG and the budget in their game department doesn't cover the expenses, then guess what....

actually sony is still losing more money than earning from the PS3s LG can now get a cut of their profits from every PS3 so now they are losing even more money, plus the money they are paying their developers for their high budget games, the stuff going into the NGP AND the playstation phone and their 3D T.Vs and w/e else they are currently working on, this can take a big hit on them, these things are expensive to make and to even get their hands on

the only thing sony as a whole does not profit on is the playstation network(which has nothing to do with the LG situation) they said that they will start profiting in 2011(this year)

This LG issue could end up costing Sony money, that is entirely possible.....but so what? Sony is a multinational, MULTIBILLION dollar conglomerate corp. Like I said, Sony is not nor ever was hurting for money.
Secondly, perhaps you are unaware, but PS2 still sells 5 - 7 million units every year. The margin on those things is astronomical. Sony PROFITS $50 on each one, minimum. So every year, Sony makes a quarter BILLION dollars PROFIT every year on PS2, like money in the bank.

yes i know about sony's track record, they for the most part are fine in their other departments, however this could possibly put too much of a dent in their gaming department, by this point sony might not even mind losing the department afterall the PS were rly just a way to advertise their other products like big screen T.Vs and blu-ray/DVD players

Yes, they did make a profit on theyre systems Endtal, but at the same time, you have to factor in the fact that PSN is still "in the red" and the fact that, even though they are making a profit on the PS3, they have not recoiled from theyre inital lost with the launch of the PS3.

There right Persistantthug. Sony (The gaming branch) has been hurting for awhile dude. They JUST we're able to gain profit from theyre systems not to long ago not to mention PSN is a main drain. But even with the current profit change, then've yet to recoil from they loses that they took from the initial PS3 launch. Dude, seriously, no amount of denial is going to change this.

Yes, Sony lost plenty of money on the PS3, especially early on...no one denying this. Sony knew they were gonna lose $. Why would Sony do this then? Because that's the cost of doing business. That was the cost of making BluRay the defacto HD disk medium and destroying HDDVD. Perhaps I'm being presumptuous, but I would imagine that Sony considers it "acceptable losses". Again, that's the cost of doing business.
Does their ends justify their means? You'll have to ask Sony

European customs officers have been ordered to seize shipments of Playstation 3s after LG won a preliminary injunction against Sony The ruling by the civil court of justice in the Hague means that all new PS3s have to be confiscated as they are imported into the UK and the rest of Europe..
