The guy wrote the book and tried to commit suicide,but he only had severe memory loss.He goes back to room 23 to find the final chapter written on the walls.The final chapter was written on his suicide attempt and remembered everything.Then he turns in and realizes that 23 isn't just a number in the last second of the film.
