On January 9th 1961 The Ramrods' "(Ghost) Riders In The Sky" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; it peaked at #30 and spent 9 weeks in the Top 100.
Vaughn Monroe's version was the most successful; on May 14th 1949 it reached #1 and stayed in the top spot for 11 weeks...
Other charted versions were; Burl Ives {#21 in 1949 & the original version}, Bing Crosby {#14 in 1949}, Peggy Lee {#2 in 1949}, Lawrence Welk {#87 in 1961}, The Baja Marimba Band {#52 in 1966}, and The Outlaws {#31 in 1961}...
Great version by a great New England group(Conn). Also many other great versions both vocally and inst. Duane Eddy, Dick Dale, the Blues Brothers, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash etc. Originally wrtiien fo and recorded by Burl Ives and the in A movie called Ghost Riders with Gene Autry. Genes is my favorite vocal and my favorite Inst is by the greatly underrated group from Britain THE SHADOWS.
Although I liked the Shadows version this is so much more atmospheric. I still have the original 45. I remember seeing a film in the late 50's, just a boy, where this tune was the main theme.Memory not gone YET!
Bought the single when it came out, on RCA Victor, I think. B side can't remember, but it had a sax thing going on. Cost me 5shillings and 9punce. (4 and thruppence change from a ten bob note.)
I can just imagine this song playing over a slow-motion gun duel in some ghost town. Every little motion as the two people stand motionless before what seems like an eternity and they both fire. The bullets pass each other in midair and continue on to their targets, striking them down and they both fall like great statues. Their faces frozen in grim determination and knowledge of what is to come. But that's just my thought.
It took me 25 years to find this song. I heard it once on the radio, had it on a mix cassette, and lost it again...all without ever knowing the name or artist. When I heard the first notes, I knew this was the song. Thanks!
Great version. Great video. I wonder if anyone has noticed that the very end of this is the same as the ending of 'Apache' by The Shadows. i wonder who was copying who.
Probably the Shads copied this. I wonder when was this recorded?
This reminds me of the old days when the cowboys used to take the cattle accross the wide open plains to sold at auctions in other towns and it took days or even months to get where they were going.
DAM GREAT VIDEO! SAD THAT NOT ONE OF THE RAMRODS DIDNT AT LEAST SING OR JUST TALK THE STORY, IF THEY COULD PUT JOHNNY CA$H'S VERSION. OR WILLIE NELSONS, ETC
What a spooky instrumental you've made this out to be. It's the video, the show being put on and tied in with all the music and background vocals/side-effects...like the moo of the steers. How they put this instrumental together is beyond me, it seems to be ahead of it's time. The video, yes the video, could only make it taunting/spooky. Anyway it was the big inst, back in the doowop era, i believe it went top 5 here in Vancouver Cda?, You can't dance but I bet its sounds great in stereo!!
YEEEEHAAA! This is best video to this song! Pity ya cant get this vid,Johnny Cash voice and Spiderbait, all playing LOUD as HELL! Yup thatd be soooo cool!
This is an awesome video for an awesome instrumental. This version of the song came out in 1961, but the original came out in 1949. I can't remember right off who had the original, but I think it was Vaughn Monroe.
