In real life, Elizabeth attended his wedding, she knew he was married. Kings (and well Elizabeth because she was considered the "king" of England) cared not for Marriage. A king was able to dissolve marriages and force them to marry another. She could of just raised her hand and dissolved the marriage right there... It just wouldn't bring her any supporters (which she needed)

Dudley was indeed married but his wife fell very conveniently from the top of a staircase. After that Elizabeth saw she would never be able to marry Dudley unless she wanted to repeat Mary Stuart's mistake, who remarried shortly after her 1st husband died. I think the problem comes in is when we use God as a reason for our own feelings and thinking. Watching Elizabeth I see that a lot.
