Where do they find these so called reporters? Why don´t they do their homework before going on air? They just love to hear their own voices... The ship was called ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE, not "Spree"!! The ship was NOT sunk by the Royal Navy but was scuttled on orders of her Captain Hans Langsdorff outside the harbour of Montevideo, Uruguay. The crew was interned in Argentina and Langsdorff comitted suicide in Buenos Aires the day after the ship was scuttled. He is buried in Buenos Aires.
Idiot reporter can't even pronounce it correctly, and the germans scuttled it. So much for doing research on a story. Loved the boat though, wish I had one.
The Graf Spee was a glorified heavy cruiser. In some ways she had less armour then the Exeter. As for weight the USS Alaska was called a large cruiser and according to wikipedia she weighed in at almost 30,000 tons standard.
One hell of a model! A guy in Britain had a 2 man 15-20 foot model of a Victorian battleship on ebay this year. He wanted £6,500 for it ($9.000?) but there were no bids. The fine details were not quite as good as this but the crew were hidden inside.
Sorry the last posting went on 3 times. An 11” shell does immense damage to a lightly-armoured cruiser and has longer range but AGS was hit between 30 & 60 times by 6” & 8”. Big German error to close range. The British fed false intelligence to the Germans in Montevideo harbour that an overwhelming force was being assembled, including Force H. To reinforce the propaganda, the 4 ships waiting just outside the 3-mile limit were ordered to make smoke, clearly seen from the Montevideo waterfront.
Just look up facts, folks - easy to find, Wikipedia will do just fine. Adm. Graf Spee was between a heavy cruiser & a full battleship, deep displacement 16,200 tons, main armament 6 × 280 mm (11 inch) guns. A full-sized British WWII battleship would be twice her size at around 35,000 ts, typically mounting 14” guns, but light cruisers such as HMS Ajax & Achilles 9740 ts with only 6” (Exeter had 8”). An 11” shell is 6x the weight of a 6” & 2.5 that of an 8”, with more range too. Not outgunned, so
1. The proper pronunciation for Graf Spee is Graf Schpay.
2. I read somewhere, and I'd like to refind the article, that the ship's water condenser had been damaged during the fight, and when she put to sea that last time she only had a few hours worth of water left on board for the engines.
3. Most, if not all, of the model builders watching this video have built the AGS a couple of times. Me, first time was the Aurora kit of her.
So, the truth is that AGS was bravely fought to a standstill & then a triumph of false intelligence brought about her end. I found the reference, Cabbievonbump: “The most critical damage was the destruction of the desalination unit. Fresh water was essential for the running of her diesels” (Wiki). Her fuel was also water-contaminated due to a hit; British ships were steam turbine-powered. Quite right, too, pronounced ‘Grarf Schpay’ auf Deutsch, with long 'a' sounds too as in ‘hard’, not ‘had’.
being part of nato germany bundesmarine is assigned to patrol the very shallow baltic sea (think of the great lakes) germany thinks this is best done with very quiet ssk u-boats! type-212...type-214 and tornado-ids fighter bombers from land...
America, get your fucking facts straight, the Royal Navy never sank the Graf Spee, infact she over powered the ships that attacked her, for unknown reseaons she broke off the attack and went to the river plate, it was there, fearing Royal Navy reinforcements, the Captain of the Graf Spee had his ship scuttled.
@NodFlareon - what a load of clap trap, she was forced back into port, out gunned, out manouvered and out numbered by the RN. She was then scuttled by her crew so she wouldnt fall into the hands of the RN - unknown reason - what are you thinking - maybe they fancied longer shore leave !! personally I think the ships captain showed common sense and saved his crew.
@3y3raven, I thought so too. Wow, it really works just like the real one. Does he uses it for war games with other ship models?. Can you imagine Germany rebuilding her fleet and having a few of her classic warships like the Graf Speee added to it with modern innovations obviously?. I have always felt that the classic warships still have a place in naval warfare, just replace the large guns or most of them a with missile launchers, or modify them to fire missiles instead of rounds.
That's alreadly been done in the US with the Iowa class battleships. But I also think that classic warships like the Graf Spee could still play a part in a naval battle today. The only problem is (even with modern equipment) that all the enemy would need is a few aircraft carriers and their aircraft, and send them all in and boom; no more battleship. They could still survive an air attack if they've got the right stuff:)
And it would be cool if Germany rebuilt her navy with those ships. They wouldn't be any problem like they were in World War Two, of course. There was actually an operation a while back to salvage the REAL Graf Spee, but i think it got called off:( It would be funny if the actual ship was rebuilt by Germany on the same hull(even though that would never happen, lol)
@3y3raven hat is not possible, the Spee was blown out by her crew and burned for days while going down. I had the chance of emailing during some time with Cpt Frederick Rasenack the highest ranking officer of the Spee here in Argentina untill his passing away a couple of years ago. The hul was broken in two parts but some partas were recovered in MOntevideo An Anchor, the Telemetre, the Eagle and a cannon. You can see the if you google Graf Spee "images" Regards Alec
Technically here was (and is) no official designation as a pocket battleship. The Germans referred to her simply as an "Armored Ship". Most experts I have read say she was just a strongly armed cruiser.
I agree, amazing model, somethging he should be really proud of (interesting German helmets on the tiny sailors) but why oh why didn't Mr. Minich and his team get their history facts correct?
AND SHE WAS SCUTTLED BY THE CREW not SUNK by the BRITS. She was cornered in Montevideo Uruguay. The guy spent more time examining the blueprints and not enough time reading about its history.
