Stuff like this happens. I think not all the same but very similar. We don't know it because it's all private and behind the curtains. I haven't heard one event like this on the news have you?
I don't follow the chain events here... Man sees "pornography" on laptop, Man becomes obsessed and ignores his children and wife, Man dresses creepy and takes a walk, Wife grows cold and distant, Wife throws man out of house and Man drives off and leaves his crying daughters. Is that what you're saying? Are we to assume then that men who see "pornography" will eventually leave their children? I've never seen this in real life. How often does it happen in Utah?
It kills me in the very beginning as the daughter runs to the edge of the porch begging the dad not to go. The love needed is there. But for what ever reason, a lack of desire or willingness to overcome the dangerous effects of pornography addiction are not.
The problem with this video / meme is that it perpetuates a stereotype that pornography must inevitably destroy families. The porn automatically turns the man into a non-caring, argumentative, and insecure father. This, of course, is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Now, I'm not saying that pornography is good. What I am saying is that the church will contribute to the destruction of families by influencing the wives of those men who look at pornography to believe that their men are complete losers.
@eascao What this video also misses is that men are not the only ones that can become addicted to porn. We had a Sunday School lesson on the dangers and one woman just went on and on about what she would do if her husband ever watched porn. I felt sorry for the guy because he would never feel like he could admit to it. Porn is an addiction and like any other addiction can be overcome. The road is hard. But, there has to be a strong support and a willingness by all to overcome.
I joined the church late in life and had developed many bad habits. As I was involved in them, some seemed even OK. Not a problem. But as I moved more toward the light away from selfish acts, and lust certainly is one of them, I became a better man, husband, and father. Actually, it wasn't until I joined the church that I became those things. If you're involved in the unsavory, try praying to overcome, and as you move away, the realization of how bad they were will become evident.
Ok. I understand that this video may seem to target men and not women, and that it may seem to say that divorced men have a problem with pornography, but please people. Listen to the message. What the video is trying to say is that there is no safe contact with pornography, whether a male or female. Take it at face value and move on. If you don't agree with the message, then don't watch the video. Sorry if I offended any of you.
After 7 years participating of this sin & addiction, finally I see myself free from it. Tears, deceptions, courage, blessings, countless prayers and fastings, scripture study, pain and more I've passed during my recovery. It's worthy. I feel no more inclination to do it, I feel strengthened. It's the result of getting closer to my Savior, help from the bishop, my friend, and my efforts. If you think you can't overcome this, don't believe yourself, it's a total lie. It is possible. Start today.
@trader1667 I would have to disagree. I am a priesthood holder who had an addiction to pornography. we can reconcile from viewing porn. but with different circumstances comes different repentance needs. when I was getting over my addiction I held the aronic priesthood. that with held me from going on a mission when I wanted to.However the consequences were not nearly as bad as a Melchizedek priesthood holder's with the same problem would be. but it can still be done.
If your marriage is struggling your husband is looking at porn, which means you should get a divorce.
If you're a divorced man in the Church, you have a porn addiction.
To me the criticism in this video, and the suggestion that divorce is the logical and righteous response to a spouses porn addiction, and all that results from it in LDS culture are worse than the behavior they're trying to correct.
@utdwcd Uh not always the case if you are divorced man in the lds church not all of them are struggling with pornogrophy. some have wives who struggle with it, etc.
@utdwcd Speech given by an Apostle of the LDS church.
Now I speak to married members, especially to any who may be considering divorce.
I strongly urge you and those who advise you to face up to the reality that for most marriage problems, the remedy is not divorce but repentance. The first step is not separation but reformation. Divorce is not an all-purpose solution, and it often creates long-term heartache. Saints should do all within their power to preserve their marriages.
I can honestly say that this video is exactly what I needed to see. I am having problems with pornography and seeing and reading the comments on this video have given me a sense to what damage it can truly cause. At first it seems harmless but soon you find yourself using it more and more frequently until you realize that you are addicted.

In response to your question I think the thing to remember here is you are creating the future you everyday. The habits and thoughts you entertain stay with you and can become deeply etched into ones character. Pornography becomes addictive and often leads one to places one never saw ahead of them. Someday you may have children and living for them today will bless them, and you now and into your future.
I love the contrast in this video -- obviously there are some thematic elements to it all to make the "good" look happier and the "bad" look worse, but essentially, the point is the same: if you give in to your baser desires, your family and friends and most especially our Heavenly Father will still love you, but you will feel alone if you turn from God. Keeping his commandments brings joy.
too me its the same thing that happens to everybody but most of them turn away the more and more you get addicted the more you lose your spirtual strength and looking at people more differently and most people lose there virginity
As we keep the commandments and live the gospel the body yields to the spirit and the sacred light comes to ones eyes and countenance. If you become disobedient to the commandments, the light becomes a little dimmer and if prolonged it is extinguished all together (i.e. the mists of darkness and muddy water takes over). The law of chastity is real and violating it by watching porn damages your spirit and stains you physically. Why? Because we are eternal spirit-beings and God lives. Amen!
@haircutbob2 It might seem like not that big of a deal, especially when you think of it as something that affects only you right now. But it's habit-forming, and getting married / being sexually active doesn't change your desire for it. But for sure it will mess with your relationships and you won't be as nice of a person. I'm speaking as someone whose husband's porn addiction ultimately led to other things that ended our marriage, pretty much exactly like this video portrayed. Porn is a plague.
After my mission I fell in porn addiction, it leaded me into homosexuality. I'm struggling with it in my life. There are many things I'm doing today in order to overcome it. I'm not totally free from it but I can see a change, my addiction it has diminished. I need to endure and be diligent. The desire of having an eternal family has increased in my heart. It hasn't been easy, it takes time and I do feel God's influence in my life. He never left me alone even when I did wrongs. He does helps
I was really worried about my brother who left the church when he married a mormon woman and joined her church. But he is happy like I have never seen him to be. he was never a very good catholic but he iis a great morman. God gave us free will so I have to give him space to exercise his free will. If the church ever ment anything to him surely this will someday weigh on his heart.
This is a powerful video. We need to stay away from pornography no matter what. It only enriches those who make it, and it leaves those who use it poor indeed.
Born to a Buddhist father and an atheist mother, I chose the right path and vehemently avoided pornography, even though it was prevalent throughout my childhood. Born in a family who followed a religion that spoke outwardly against it, my husband chose to pursue in secret and destroyed our family. Sometimes our choices as individuals are not enough.
he loves us and know what we go through everyday,he knows us better than we do Im sorry you feel alone we all feel like that sometimes but you must know that when ever we feel alone means that God is close and he wants you to remember he is there for you ALWAYS
@GospelPrinciples101 God not only knows you personally, but he loves you as an individual more than you or I can imagine. He loves YOU infinitely and unconditionally. I know it is difficult to imagine, it is for me as well. But I also know that God's way of doing things is much different than our own, and that we shouldn't let our inability to comprehend it get in the way. If you feel alone, pray to God and let Him know. Everything that is important to you is just as important to Him.
One way to combat porn is to boycott any and all businesses that distribute porn whether they be video stores, hotel establishments or cable providers. Once that takes place then many businesses will stop making the materials so available.
A critical discussion is warranted around the tactics used by the church to create an environment in which people mark others and themselves as sick or weak or unworthy (aka men who give into temptation) without having to provide any justification for the basis of such a blanket conclusion. Please, some self-reflection around how the church, with these messages, may play a part in creating the harm that they suggest universally/deterministically follows from an individual behaviour and choice.
A more thoughtful and open discussion around sexuality would include the many factors that can and do create problems around pornography w/o simplifying the topic to the individual choices made by men not to give in to temptation and it's inevitable consequences.
I'm sad to admit that about half my life i was addicted to pornography. What is even more sad is that i'm only 16. It has been really hard to recover, but every day I fight the battle to become who I should be: a worthy Priesthood holder. The biggest reason I stopped is because pornography is a big reason what ended my parents' marriage. And it is my main goal in life to have a happy and eternal marriage, and give my future children the life I never could have. I am so thankful for repentance.
I have a difficult time seeing what is so wrong with pornography. I could understand how it would be a problem for someone with a family, like in the video. But as an adolescent, I can tell you, that the stress of "dirty" thoughts, for lack of a better word, can be overwhelming at times, and this just helps to get rid of that stress. It just can't find anything wrong with it, as long as you practice moderation. Please, someone, I would love to be enlightened. Thank you.
Pornography or sex addiction is more addictive than any individual chemical substance abuse, as it affects more areas of the brain and senses. It is indeed used as a stress-relieving drug as you mentioned, but is difficult to keep in moderation, due to its extremely potent ability to condition thoughts. Check out some of the studies on what is called "the funnel" of uncontrollable behavior past the point of initial stimulation. Big tobacco is nothing next to the porn industry.
@haircutbob2 I see where you're coming from, and I don't know how old you are, but as an adolescent, I can say that I do struggle, every day, with the bad thoughts that enter my head. But what I also know, is that if you (you as in whoever) don't get control of it early, and repent and what not, then it WILL affect marriage/family. Sorry if i'm not too clear on what i said, and i hope it seemed nice enough (i know its hard when non verbal), but if you want to talk more about this, message me.
@haircutbob2 There are several things wrong with pornography. Firstly, Jesus taught "whosoever looketh on a women to lust after her, commiteth adultery in his heart". & Adultery is one of the oldest commandments or social laws.Secondly, when viewing pornography, one tends to dehumanise the person they're watching.Persistent viewing will lead to a detachment from normal social relationships, as you will begin to only see people for what they look like.Thirdly, viewing pornography is addictive
@haircutbob2 I agree that porn can relieve stress like you say, but for me it also changed how I thought about girls. It seemed to come with "benefits", but when I looked at the rest of my life, it was taking me places I didn't want to go. Sex is awesome, or at least it can be if you can figure out how to fit it into a real relationship with a real person. In my experience, that is really hard, and spending time with the Internet ladies makes it a lot harder.
@haircutbob2 Would you really "love to be enlightened"? Pray God to cause you to understand this in His Spirit: When you yield to the enticings of God, your flesh becomes subject to your spirit as master and commander of your soul. Conversely, when you yield to the appetites of the flesh, your spirit becomes subject to the flesh, denying you the strength of spiritual focus. Ask God if it's true.
I am 22 and in college, i date and am super ambitious, i know where you’re coming from, i also have friends that are 22, 21, and 20 that started porn when they were 12, 10, and 15 when they started looking at porn as well as 100's of other kids who got caught in that stuff, and it completely and utterly destroyed their life’s, they told me that it ruined their relationships, they are struggling in school, and in so many things.
@haircutbob2 It will destroy your focus so bad, it is worse than drugs, alcohol, etc. because when that stuff leaves your system it is gone, but porn never wills, it is like a virus. It will change the way you look at girls, talk to them, what you want from them. I know for a fact that is destructive to all ages, if you don’t feel it now you will feel it down the line when you try to better your world. Any more questions comments feel free to reply man
@haircutbob2 I'm not Mormon so I don't know why it's important for them but as a girl I can understand why it may be bad to start. How can a guy or a girl who uses pornography see people as only people- and not as objects of satisfaction. I had a guy friend who was addicted to pornography. He said it changed the way he saw others, especially girls. He had a hard time trusting and dating because he felt as if he was using them and vice versa. It was very hard for him to believe in love.
@haircutbob2 well, it ruined my sisters marriage. The problem is that it, like other substances is addictive. Most everyone has been effected by it. It starts at a young age. Curiosity leads to lust and it becomes a crutch like alcohol or cigarettes. Science proves powerful attachment hormones are released while watching it. Ted Bundy explained in an interview before execution, the sole common interest of 99% of death row is pornography. Progressively addictive and spiritually coroding.
@haircutbob2 As someone who struggled with pornography addiction since ADOLESCENT and as a WOMAN, I can say that you really don't understand that struggle. I became addicted wanting to experience new highs. It was like going from soft-drugs to hard-drugs as time went by. While I never acted on those desires of intimacy with another person. My views of men is currently being rebuilt and the images are going away.
I may not be Mormon but I do agree with this message b/c of my experience.
@haircutbob2 I see your point. I saw your point when I was 16, I saw it at 21, at 27 when I got married, and now at 31 with a 6 month old baby. Habits are hard to break so don't start.
I understand your concern but what about when you do end up having a family? Will you be able to stop cold turkey?
It is true that there should be moderation but the church says to stay away from alcohol, drugs, pornography etc because our minds our wired to struggle with, "when is enough?"
Perhaps one cup of wine isn't that bad for you (although, you can get the same positive health benefits by drinking grape juice) but it's the fact that we, as humans, justify everything.
I know what you are saying. As long as it's something you do from time to time, it won't effect anyone else, and it helps ease the sexual stress in your life. Pornography though dulls your senses, and it will make you look at sex differently, and not a normally. It can be addicting. The worse kind of addiction, because it's a mental addiction. Those images can't be erased. Unlike physical addiction. It could effect your future relationship with your spouse.
@haircutbob2 Yes we adolescents are tempted with "Dirty" thoughts, but as you can see....dont think of you as a spouse but as a child to that family. Being cought with pornography can and will tear your family apart, and worst of all tear the spirit and the very soul right out of you. Pornography is a "Secretive" thing,As Satan, is he is very secret and mysterious. Realize that Pornography is a terrible sin, and of corse is very tempting but as you dwell with the spirt, you'll learn to turn away
I am an adolescent, but to tell you the truth its gross. When I get married if my husband were to watch or look at "dirty" things I would be hurt. Am I not good enough for you? Would be in the back of my head. There are many other way to relieve your stress. It can affect your future family, your wife not liking it and ur children. I would lose some respect fom my parents if I saw them looking at that stuff. It turns into a habit and its not a good one. I hope this helped :)
well, trust me, anyone who is planning on starting a family will not be able to make the same choose to leave pornagrophy, seeing as how the addiction is greater than that of any drug. All I'm saying is give yourself the freedom to use your agency freely, as you were intended to, becoming an addict means we no longer have our agency, it becomes almost impossible to say no
@haircutbob2 ok so i was gonna reply saying how its addicting and cant effect u in the future, bla bla bla. but i saw that like 100 other ppl already said that. all i'll is that pornography would only cause even more 'dirty' thoughts
@haircutbob2 it degrades women and pollutes the minds of men. It completely perverts the purpose of sexual intercourse and makes a mockery of God's powers of procreation. There are two things God takes very seriously and that is the power to give and take away life. Pornography is also intensely addictive. It's one of Satan's greatest tools in enslaving us. It provides momentary satisfaction but long-term misery.
Seriously...you can't see what is wrong with a porn addiction? Tell me - how will this make you or your family stronger? As an adolescent, what good will this do? It is a thirst that cannot be quenched. You can drink this in as much as you'd like and never feel satisfied.
@haircutbob2 despite your trolling you raise a good point: i would like to see an extension of this video addressing adolescents, where exposure begins, and how it is particularly addictive to those who've been emotionally neglected by parents. there is a prominent neuro-psychologist who discusses how an adrenaline addiction of this kind alters the mind. actors illustrating how pornography alienates, emotionally and spiritually self-isolates youth and inhibits female campanionship could help.
@haircutbob2 perhaps thirdly, how it affects relationships in general when it is used to avoid problems and when ordinary types of real-world stimulus are perceived [falsely] as sexual in nature, the dangerous effects of viewers believing pornographic actors represent real-life possibilities and act on them (e.g. lesbianism, voyeurism, child pornography, violence, etc.) and how obvious it is for outsiders to recognize these people and how they are treated differently because of these beliefs.
@haircutbob2 Remember you came from a woman, no mother would like to see her son enjoying such material. You are better than that, if the dirty thoughts overwhelm you, try going outside, sing a song, call a friend. Try to keep your mind focused on something positive, pornography will destroy your will, and will affect your relationship with your future spouse... never let it take you over, true happiness comes from serving others, porn only leads to selfishness ..
@haircutbob2 I would agree with you that it can be overwhelming as an adolescent. It may even relieve stress at the time. But it is similar to excessive debt; it relieves immediate stress, but will cause so much more later in life, that you can look back and always wonder, "Why did I do that?".
@haircutbob2 Read the scriptures, they'll show you why it is wrong, not only for married people but for young, singles, adults, male and female. Ether 12:4, I got my patriarchal blessings when I was 16, I lost many blessings, revelations, I lost growth in the most important aspects of my life, only because I was doing, what I thought at that moment, what I consider moderation. Be careful. God is a perfect God D & C 1:31
@proverbs129 I know, it's really a shame. There's a lot of misunderstood and often incorrect information out there about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Hopefully you aren't one of the people who would tune out these great messages because of that.
Would it be wrong to send this to my Dad? He did almost separate from my Mom 2 years ago bc of it... I found out he was watching porn when I was in 5th grade (didnt say a word about it) & 6 years later he says to my Mom & me that hes been unhappy for years & wants a separation. Me & my mom prayed very hard & started to go to church again. Mysteriously, my Dad caught Ammonia & even all the pain he put us through, we took care of him & he decided to stay. God does work in mysterious ways...
It is YOUR own fault for accepting addictions into your lives. Temptation puts it out there and you have the option to REFUSE, no matter how addicting. Don't blame the object, blame yourself. Porn, drugs, sex, money, alcohol, etc. doesn't ruin lives, addiction does. You ruin your own life. That is why there are the words "choice" and "destiny".
Amen brother. I'm not yet where you are, but I can testify as well of the Grace of our Heavenly Father and in Jesus Christ. I look forward to being able to say, "I Beat it." Thank you for this motivating video, and thank you for your motivating testimony.
I have nothing against mormonism as a christian and i completely agree with this message, but people see mormon, and automatically tune out because mormons have a bad reputation. just saying
@proverbs129 what have you heard about the LDS church that might give Mormons a bad reputation? I promise, I have heard many things- especially in the military- I'm just wondering why you say that.
Yes. It breaks families apart. And I know this from my own personal experience. There are scars made not only on the guy himself, but also his wife and his kids. They will not forget the damage that he has caused in their lives.
I'm 14, and my dad is addicted to pornography. He doesn't think I know, but I've seen him looking at it on his computer, on his phone... He does it right in front of me and my mom, and sometimes we don't even notice. We're both too scared to confront him about it. I can't have any meaningful relationship with my dad now because I'm just so... disappointed that he's that kind of man. I fully support this mission, and hope it succeeds.
@MyLifeIsMusic16 you should give him a hug and tell him in that moment that you are praying for him in order to leave that addiction. and tell him "I love you so much.
@cordov00 AKA Tell on your dad and make life harder. Right. That really will make the marriage strained. Going to someone else about it just puts the person in a harder situation. The more you push, the more they will pull away.
@Rifftiff Talking to your Bishop, and mom about it, is not Let's gang up on Dad. It's what can you say that will not be on the offensive. Most people who have trouble with Porn are not in the I have a problem, phase. They already know they have a problem, and simply want to ignore, or justify it. If it bothers you, it's a problem. The real insight is how to say this without alienating your family. If you come in and say something Like "I know you're watching porn you sinner" Talk to them 1st.
Addiction is addiction, whether it be pornography or chemical. But truly ask yourselves, which one is a bigger issue, the child in the crack house, or the child in the home with a father who watches porn. Throw out your religion for a moment and focus just on that scenario, which one is worse?
how is this porn's fault. hear me out. if you go to porn. theres something wrong with you. either you aren't doing so well with your significant other or your alone, if your alone your body builds up natural hormones that you need to release. this is natural... god made you all this way. its true some people take it over the edge. but same with alcohol. its nice to have a glass of wine sometimes but not to be wasted all the time... doesn't jesus drink wine in the bible or something?
Anyone who has, or is, recovering from addiction will recognize the depth of meaning of this divine message. I don't need convincing that the church is true, and this message again proves for me the need for prophets in our day. The message is inspired from a loving Heavenly Father who desires for our welfare. Who has shown us the way the break the chains of the adversary and liberated the captive. For those cynical to this message, you are only in denying yourself greater happiness
Just watching the little girl cry for her daddy...made me want to go home and spend MORE time with my children. I never had a problem watching porn, but I've been part of a family that has been torn apart due to infidelity. Thank you for this video.
After my mission I fell in porn addiction, it took me for many worse ways, even homosexuality. After 6 years I have come to a deeper change in my life, It is not easy but In these few months sober the Lord has blessed me a lot. The Addiction Recovery Program helps me so much. And the atonement is the basic thing to come back to God and to be forgiven. God doesn't care what i did for more than 6 years, He cares in what I am doing now and He is helping me every hour.
That is so beautiful thank you for that lovely message God bless you Amen. I know how that feel falling in hard time with family I should know I 'm one of them but God show me the way ..
I am a licensed clinical social worker for LDS Family Services and I know pornography is waging major attacks on individuals and familiies. The battle is not becoming easier and will continue to expand. Parents and others who lead youth need extensive guidance and tools to assist them in fighting pornography. Don't be in denial! Get help. It is not impossible to overcome this addiction, but the secret/s, the lies have to be brought forward so others can help.
@stonerchick910 Hello, it is impossible to deny the importance the Creator and Savior have when speaking of families. Marriage and family are institutions created by God himself in order for mankind to find true joy and happiness in this temporary state we call mortality.
I really like the way this was filmed. Elder Holland's message could be about any decision but I also like that they chose to portray something that is crucial to the family relationship that the world may not agree with.
@twelvedo11ars pornography is a very harmful and destructive addiction. it turns people into objects to be used for your own selfish desires. I'm sorry if you don't understand how harmfull it is- not only to yourself, but to others as well. pornography changes the way you look at people. It utterly destroys relationships. And pornography is not just pictures. It's anything that causes lustful desires.
As someone who has struggled with resistance to this pervasive evil, this video was heartwrenching to me. I've been both of those men at one time or another and walked both of those paths. I thank God I never strayed so deep into the darkness that I could no longer see the beautiful faces of my wife and daughters. It's been hard for me because of the sexual abuse I suffered as a child, abuse which left me predisposed for this sort of thing. My loving family has kept me back from the brink.
such a powerful message. I have seen the damning effects of viewing pornography in those I have loved and known. It truly is addicting, debilitating, and a very hard addiction to overcome. But it CAN be done with the help of our Savior Jesus Christ. Don't take the first step, turn back and run far from it!
This is powerful. Please listen to its message. The entire world needs to listen. And they need to act. "I WILL GIVE PLACE NO MORE FOR THE ENEMY OF MY SOUL"
I have friends that send porn via text msg.. I tell them porn isn't worth the time it took to send it. I see some of them having trouble in their marriages because they are losing desire for their wife for an ideal model of what a woman should be.
"this message of guilt and shame is what causes so many religious men to lie and retreat into the darkness", Are you kidding? It only has that effect on those who give up the good fight, or who willfully rationalize and hide sin. Here, Elder Holland bears solemn testimony of the severe dangers of pornography. It's effects are devastating, spiritually and socially and psychologically!
Hello my name is Misael and I am from mexico I would like to have some of the messages that i see here please if anyone knows how to download them thank you my email address is misael_24@live.com
It shows the same person, as he is making a decision. The decisions he makes determine whether he will be a part of a happy family, or bring misery upon himself and the family. It shows him, for example, deciding between watching porn on the computer, or turning it off.
@ChinaRuler its a video explaining if you pray and spend time with each other and have a humble and open heart then your family will be together forever but if you dont and make the wrong dision thenbyour family can be broken apart very easily but if you pray to our lord jesus christ then he will help you make the right disiions:) im 13 and im mormon:)
The proper filters do make porn avoidable. Even though second-hand smoke is hard to avoid, we still have rules against smoking. Matthew 5 condemns any lustful looks.
I know that the gospel of Jesus Christ teaches about overcoming addictions, not just avoiding temptation. All people are addicted to some sin. If anyone is reading this who is addicted, get help! This is not about where you have been as where you can go through Christ Jesus!
I am not mormon.. I am non denominational christian but this is a really good message and I understood what they were getting at like right away in the clip. Thanks
Love this message. It can be applied to other challenges in life too. When we don't give in to the SMALL temptations, it actually helps us to fight against the BIG one.
i agree with this message, you u should always do your best to do the right thing. especially in this scenario, giving into the wrongful temptations can never result in good. But, what do you do when your happiness and your peace of the mind is on the line while deciding on your next move? what if, doing the right thing (for example staying in an marriage, even though you're miserable) shatters your personal life? what should you do then?
Wow. This makes me so sad. I am no fan of pornography, but this message of guilt and shame is what causes so many religious men to lie and retreat into the darkness when they view pornography. Messages like this cause despair and depression. The porn industry makes it extremely difficult to avoid porn altogether, people need to be able to talk about it without so much fear. This isn't a realistic message. Viewing porn isn't always sex addiction and it doesn't have to destroy families like this.
@tehduchess This video should only make you feel sad and afraid and depressed if you are guilty of the things it talks about. This message gives hope to those who seek it. It is not trying to scare anyone away. You are missing the bigger picture it teaches. This message isn't only talking about pornography but any temptation we can face in our lives. Stop trying to rationalize that pornograpghy is not that bad. It does destroy families. But this message tells people that it is never too late...
The maker of the video is LDS, the subject is pornography. But the people who receive the message are all those who wish it, and the subject is whatever decision is the one the watcher of the video is agonizing over at this time. And what Elder Holland is telling all viewers is this: the step you take in regards to the choice you are about to make is going to change your life, no matter whether it is pornography, or some other type of action you are contemplating.
I am the EX wife of a man who valued his alcoholism, porn, and work over his family- the devastation it brought to our family has forever consequences and he will answer for HIS choices on judgement day. I am now married to a wonderful man whos first wife passed away from cancer. We were married in the temple and now I have the blessings I was promised and have the life I have always prayed for. This video is but a small REAL example of the difference choices can make
I'm so thankful for modern day prophets and apostles! I'm thankful for their constant guidance and constant teachings to be guardians of virtue. In a world of shifting values and contempt for sacred things, I am even more thankful for Temple covenants, and the knowledge of eternal families.
I have seen how pornography addiction can destroy families, marriages, and people. What a powerful message. There is hope for anyone who is struggling with this and other addictions.
There's a monopoly on morality .... It doesn't take religion to be a good person..... It is simply through being aware of the consequences of our actions, and making the right decisions..... It has nothing to do with anyone else other than yourself. We are the power and the spirit that "we're" taught to seek outside of ourselves by worshiping "Lords" .... We need look no further than our hearts and minds... and to be mindful of our actions.
@Ourteevee I tell you, today. That if it wasn't for a an all-knowing God whom I could confess to with all my darkest secrets that I knew were wrong because it was destroying me and I was too ashamed to tell anyone, I wouldn't have changed and become the strong person of fortitude I am. Healthy of mind, body, and spirit. If it was my choice, I would've done what was easy. In a perfect world, yes, anyone can heal themselves without God. But this, my friend, is a truly broken world...
@Ourteevee Yes there are exceptions, many people have been raised and/or are genetically capable of approaching their problems logically, and people can live a normal life without religion. But not everyone has that mental discipline. Specifically addressing the LDS church, more people are more likely to become not only a "good person" but a constantly improving person if they follow all of its teachings, although not saying non-religious people never work to improve themselves.
This message is about as straight forward as it can get! Elder Holland is sincere in his words and his love for all of God's Children, even you. He does represent the Savior Jesus Christ and is a Special Witness of Him.
perhaps most are not plagued with a tendency towards this. but for those who have a weakness (a 'cross to bear'), it is a very huge problem. some have suggested that it's level of hold on someone can be that of cocaine or heroine. something like this cannot be conquered without help. I made stupid choices when I was younger. this is worse than drugs...its has a far more encompassing effect on the soul. when I had no religion, I saw not much reason to get out. this Chuch helped save me!
Avoiding pornography at all costs, is certainly a most crucial decision- but choosing to turn off the computer (or gadgets) and spend time with your family will always bring happiness, no matter what your doing in the digital world.
This video is very nice. The Mormon church teaches lots of good things; Be good to others, be kind, love your family, love your neighbors, do unto other what you would want them to do unto you, etc. But you don't have to believe in Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, or any religion at all to believe in those truths.
@AmyJoHarris No, you're right, you don't. That's the nice thing about truth; it doesn't matter who or what you are, it's there for everyone to find and accept... or deny... and it never changes, no matter what. :)
@AmyJoHarris You're right...it's wonderful that so many of us have these things in common. There are many blessings that come from having a testimony of the Book of Mormon. We not only believe to love our families, but we believe that they are meant to be together forever. And the restored gospel of Jesus Christ is the only church on this earth where these blessings can be claimed.
Addiction to pornography, just as any other addiciton, can destroy a family. I have seen so many people struggle with the icy grip of addiction, and when they conquer one they seem to find another. I believe it's because they don't understand what is causing it. If you have the will to overcome what haunts you, you can truly be free.
How BIG one little step takes you!Satan has a way of making you think good is evil and evil is good!there is a sentence in a scripture that helps me stay in the right track if i feel like im losing myself its in the book of Mormon Alma 30:60 reads"thus we see that the devil will not support his children at the last day,but doth speedily drag them down to hell.'' this gets me because when i am losing my way i think in the end what will i lead myself to misery!satan will not help me but god will
Christian or non Christian, it's a matter of choices in life...to choose the right way and live a happy life or to choose the wrong way and live a horrible life.
This video literally brought me to tears. Pornography isn’t my particular cross to bear, but it really is sobering to think how my choices can affect not only me but my wife and kids.
I'm not Mormon but I thought this video was really sweet. I think a man can make a choice to pick his family over pornography without the need for religion, it's a choice like everything else.
@ambygirl1008 A man can make a choice to pick his family over pornography without the need for religion but my experience is that it's much easier with the principles taught in religion.
This video is not only important for those married people... but the singles in the church. Men and women alike, If you can start now on your road to recovery before you get married it will be such a strength to you and your marriage.
@knoxvilleskeptic
Stuff like this happens. I think not all the same but very similar. We don't know it because it's all private and behind the curtains. I haven't heard one event like this on the news have you?
JSieng812 3 weeks ago
I don't follow the chain events here... Man sees "pornography" on laptop, Man becomes obsessed and ignores his children and wife, Man dresses creepy and takes a walk, Wife grows cold and distant, Wife throws man out of house and Man drives off and leaves his crying daughters. Is that what you're saying? Are we to assume then that men who see "pornography" will eventually leave their children? I've never seen this in real life. How often does it happen in Utah?
KnoxvilleSkeptic 1 month ago
It kills me in the very beginning as the daughter runs to the edge of the porch begging the dad not to go. The love needed is there. But for what ever reason, a lack of desire or willingness to overcome the dangerous effects of pornography addiction are not.
rattler0812 1 month ago in playlist Favorite GC Talks
The problem with this video / meme is that it perpetuates a stereotype that pornography must inevitably destroy families. The porn automatically turns the man into a non-caring, argumentative, and insecure father. This, of course, is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Now, I'm not saying that pornography is good. What I am saying is that the church will contribute to the destruction of families by influencing the wives of those men who look at pornography to believe that their men are complete losers.
eascao 1 month ago 5
@eascao What this video also misses is that men are not the only ones that can become addicted to porn. We had a Sunday School lesson on the dangers and one woman just went on and on about what she would do if her husband ever watched porn. I felt sorry for the guy because he would never feel like he could admit to it. Porn is an addiction and like any other addiction can be overcome. The road is hard. But, there has to be a strong support and a willingness by all to overcome.
rattler0812 1 month ago in playlist Favorite GC Talks
I joined the church late in life and had developed many bad habits. As I was involved in them, some seemed even OK. Not a problem. But as I moved more toward the light away from selfish acts, and lust certainly is one of them, I became a better man, husband, and father. Actually, it wasn't until I joined the church that I became those things. If you're involved in the unsavory, try praying to overcome, and as you move away, the realization of how bad they were will become evident.
probrojeffro 2 months ago 5

A Priesthood holder just can not reconcile viewing porn with the covenants he has made when he received the Priesthood.

To me the criticism in this video, and the suggestion that divorce is the logical and righteous response to a spouses porn addiction, and all that results from it in LDS culture are worse than the behavior they're trying to correct.
utdwcd 3 months ago
@utdwcd Uh not always the case if you are divorced man in the lds church not all of them are struggling with pornogrophy. some have wives who struggle with it, etc.
hawkbro8 3 months ago
@utdwcd Speech given by an Apostle of the LDS church.
Now I speak to married members, especially to any who may be considering divorce.
I strongly urge you and those who advise you to face up to the reality that for most marriage problems, the remedy is not divorce but repentance. The first step is not separation but reformation. Divorce is not an all-purpose solution, and it often creates long-term heartache. Saints should do all within their power to preserve their marriages.

Amen!
kja4157 5 months ago
@haircutbob2 It might seem like not that big of a deal, especially when you think of it as something that affects only you right now. But it's habit-forming, and getting married / being sexually active doesn't change your desire for it. But for sure it will mess with your relationships and you won't be as nice of a person. I'm speaking as someone whose husband's porn addiction ultimately led to other things that ended our marriage, pretty much exactly like this video portrayed. Porn is a plague.

But he is happy like I have never seen him to be. he was never a very good catholic but he iis a great morman. God gave us free will so I have to give him space to exercise his free will.

A critical discussion is warranted around the tactics used by the church to create an environment in which people mark others and themselves as sick or weak or unworthy (aka men who give into temptation) without having to provide any justification for the basis of such a blanket conclusion. Please, some self-reflection around how the church, with these messages, may play a part in creating the harm that they suggest universally/deterministically follows from an individual behaviour and choice.
chiaet 6 months ago
A more thoughtful and open discussion around sexuality would include the many factors that can and do create problems around pornography w/o simplifying the topic to the individual choices made by men not to give in to temptation and it's inevitable consequences.

Thank you.
haircutbob2 6 months ago 11
@haircutbob2
CriticalThinkess 6 months ago 2
@haircutbob2 I see where you're coming from, and I don't know how old you are, but as an adolescent, I can say that I do struggle, every day, with the bad thoughts that enter my head. But what I also know, is that if you (you as in whoever) don't get control of it early, and repent and what not, then it WILL affect marriage/family. Sorry if i'm not too clear on what i said, and i hope it seemed nice enough (i know its hard when non verbal), but if you want to talk more about this, message me.
BronSoloSV 6 months ago
@haircutbob2 There are several things wrong with pornography. Firstly, Jesus taught "whosoever looketh on a women to lust after her, commiteth adultery in his heart". & Adultery is one of the oldest commandments or social laws.Secondly, when viewing pornography, one tends to dehumanise the person they're watching.Persistent viewing will lead to a detachment from normal social relationships, as you will begin to only see people for what they look like.Thirdly, viewing pornography is addictive
wikiburp 6 months ago
@haircutbob2 I agree that porn can relieve stress like you say, but for me it also changed how I thought about girls. It seemed to come with "benefits", but when I looked at the rest of my life, it was taking me places I didn't want to go. Sex is awesome, or at least it can be if you can figure out how to fit it into a real relationship with a real person. In my experience, that is really hard, and spending time with the Internet ladies makes it a lot harder.
BTW, thanks for your honest comment

@haircutbob2 Would you really "love to be enlightened"? Pray God to cause you to understand this in His Spirit: When you yield to the enticings of God, your flesh becomes subject to your spirit as master and commander of your soul. Conversely, when you yield to the appetites of the flesh, your spirit becomes subject to the flesh, denying you the strength of spiritual focus. Ask God if it's true.

Progressively addictive and spiritually coroding.
rambojoe2323 5 months ago 2
@haircutbob2 As someone who struggled with pornography addiction since ADOLESCENT and as a WOMAN, I can say that you really don't understand that struggle. I became addicted wanting to experience new highs. It was like going from soft-drugs to hard-drugs as time went by. While I never acted on those desires of intimacy with another person. My views of men is currently being rebuilt and the images are going away.
I may not be Mormon but I do agree with this message b/c of my experience.

@haircutbob2 despite your trolling you raise a good point: i would like to see an extension of this video addressing adolescents, where exposure begins, and how it is particularly addictive to those who've been emotionally neglected by parents. there is a prominent neuro-psychologist who discusses how an adrenaline addiction of this kind alters the mind. actors illustrating how pornography alienates, emotionally and spiritually self-isolates youth and inhibits female campanionship could help.
smullindesign 4 months ago

@cordov00 AKA Tell on your dad and make life harder. Right. That really will make the marriage strained. Going to someone else about it just puts the person in a harder situation. The more you push, the more they will pull away.
Rifftiff 5 months ago
@Rifftiff Talking to your Bishop, and mom about it, is not Let's gang up on Dad. It's what can you say that will not be on the offensive. Most people who have trouble with Porn are not in the I have a problem, phase. They already know they have a problem, and simply want to ignore, or justify it. If it bothers you, it's a problem. The real insight is how to say this without alienating your family. If you come in and say something Like "I know you're watching porn you sinner" Talk to them 1st.
sunshine997 5 months ago
Addiction is addiction, whether it be pornography or chemical. But truly ask yourselves, which one is a bigger issue, the child in the crack house, or the child in the home with a father who watches porn. Throw out your religion for a moment and focus just on that scenario, which one is worse?
metalteehth8 6 months ago 2
@metalteehth8 I'm not being sarcastic, but I do think porn is.
BronSoloSV 6 months ago
how is this porn's fault. hear me out. if you go to porn. theres something wrong with you. either you aren't doing so well with your significant other or your alone, if your alone your body builds up natural hormones that you need to release. this is natural... god made you all this way. its true some people take it over the edge. but same with alcohol. its nice to have a glass of wine sometimes but not to be wasted all the time... doesn't jesus drink wine in the bible or something?

Anyone who has, or is, recovering from addiction will recognize the depth of meaning of this divine message. I don't need convincing that the church is true, and this message again proves for me the need for prophets in our day. The message is inspired from a loving Heavenly Father who desires for our welfare. Who has shown us the way the break the chains of the adversary and liberated the captive. For those cynical to this message, you are only in denying yourself greater happiness

Get help. It is not impossible to overcome this addiction, but the secret/s, the lies have to be brought forward so others can help.

twelvedo11ars 7 months ago 4

@tehduchess :

Love this message. It can be applied to other challenges in life too. When we don't give in to the SMALL temptations, it actually helps us to fight against the BIG one.
poppysaraht 7 months ago
i agree with this message, you u should always do your best to do the right thing. especially in this scenario, giving into the wrongful temptations can never result in good. But, what do you do when your happiness and your peace of the mind is on the line while deciding on your next move? what if, doing the right thing (for example staying in an marriage, even though you're miserable) shatters your personal life? what should you do then?
CeVoyageur 7 months ago
Viewing porn isn't always sex addiction and it doesn't have to destroy families like this.
tehduchess 7 months ago 2
@tehduchess This video should only make you feel sad and afraid and depressed if you are guilty of the things it talks about. This message gives hope to those who seek it. It is not trying to scare anyone away. You are missing the bigger picture it teaches. This message isn't only talking about pornography but any temptation we can face in our lives. Stop trying to rationalize that pornograpghy is not that bad. It does destroy families. But this message tells people that it is never too late...
iwasmuted4 7 months ago
I love that the focus of this message isn't pornography, it's the effects of pornography on your life.
iacobus315 7 months ago 7
The maker of the video is LDS, the subject is pornography. But the people who receive the message are all those who wish it, and the subject is whatever decision is the one the watcher of the video is agonizing over at this time. And what Elder Holland is telling all viewers is this: the step you take in regards to the choice you are about to make is going to change your life, no matter whether it is pornography, or some other type of action you are contemplating.

Ourteevee 7 months ago 2
@Ourteevee I tell you, today. That if it wasn't for a an all-knowing God whom I could confess to with all my darkest secrets that I knew were wrong because it was destroying me and I was too ashamed to tell anyone, I wouldn't have changed and become the strong person of fortitude I am. Healthy of mind, body, and spirit. If it was my choice, I would've done what was easy. In a perfect world, yes, anyone can heal themselves without God. But this, my friend, is a truly broken world...
TheRougeHawksClan 7 months ago
@Ourteevee Yes there are exceptions, many people have been raised and/or are genetically capable of approaching their problems logically, and people can live a normal life without religion. But not everyone has that mental discipline. Specifically addressing the LDS church, more people are more likely to become not only a "good person" but a constantly improving person if they follow all of its teachings, although not saying non-religious people never work to improve themselves.

perhaps most are not plagued with a tendency towards this. but for those who have a weakness (a 'cross to bear'), it is a very huge problem. some have suggested that it's level of hold on someone can be that of cocaine or heroine. something like this cannot be conquered without help. I made stupid choices when I was younger. this is worse than drugs...its has a far more encompassing effect on the soul. when I had no religion, I saw not much reason to get out. this Chuch helped save me!
Sibelius19 7 months ago 4
Avoiding pornography at all costs, is certainly a most crucial decision- but choosing to turn off the computer (or gadgets) and spend time with your family will always bring happiness, no matter what your doing in the digital world.

This video is very nice. The Mormon church teaches lots of good things; Be good to others, be kind, love your family, love your neighbors, do unto other what you would want them to do unto you, etc. But you don't have to believe in Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, or any religion at all to believe in those truths.
AmyJoHarris 7 months ago 5
@AmyJoHarris No, you're right, you don't. That's the nice thing about truth; it doesn't matter who or what you are, it's there for everyone to find and accept... or deny... and it never changes, no matter what. :)
mrmn8honeybee 7 months ago 4
