  • I found one of the shells (1985) at auction, trying to talk myself into buying it.

    Grah (Graham?)

  • Karpinens rowing looks so elegant and easy...

  • Karpinnen what a beast.

  • Wow ive known Andrew and his dad for such a long time but i have never watched this video. RIP Andrew Sudduth.

  • United States attacking... Er Soviet Union!

    yeah right xD

  • i worked with Urs on Karpinnens boat during the night before the final. Was great to watch him come through the field.

  • you look at karp technique and he's slapping the water with the oars lol. amazing he still is fast. true power!

  • Karppinen is definitely not slapping the water, even on this choppy water.

  • 4:50 call it what you want to.

  • @hotty198 im meeting karp very soon! he is coming to my rowing club

  • cool man!! gonna race him?? lol im sure u could beat him now

  • they look so relaxed at finish

  • A couple of years ago, World Rowing Magazine reported Pertti Karppinen, then 52, at 5:51 x 2000 m on the erg. I doubt he is not human... :^)

  • erg is one time span... water is another(slower)

  • I wouldn't blame P.K. for not being able to do 5:51 on the water, eh? ;^) Yet he was doing 6:59 in 1979...

  • I liked the Russian style in those days - it always seemed so simple...

  • Long powerful strokes he had, it was under a spell. He was 39 and I was 19. It was an awesome experience that I will never forget.

    XENO

  • Perti is a beast.

Thank you rowermc for this footage.

I raced Perti in 1992 Lucerne. I lead him the same way Andy did, and then he mowed me down in a ridiculous manner. Either Lange or Chalupa won the race, I have forgotten who came in third, maybe Kajetan Broniefski, I was fourth for a while from what I remember.... Perti was fifth a lane next to me. And I remember to this day his contagious rhythm.

  • I was there for the final and saw it all - there were difficult conditions !

  • Amazing!

    RIP Andy Sudduth

  • who are these old school soldiers ?

  • Not many scullers can say they had a length on Karpinnen with 250m to go. Full credit to Sudduth.

  • Perti Karpinnen - what an athlete!
