American oil independence is a fantasy. It will not happen ever again. Just look at the numbers. It is not possible to produce 10 mbd from shale oil at $20-$30. Ridiculous.
And no, the problems are really there, they havent been "solved". Why would you so desperately go for shale oil that you destroy your own drinking water and environment? There are better options on the way.
The age of oil is ever so slowly coming to an end.
US has 800 billion barrels of recoverable shale oil per the 2005 Rand Institute Study. Cost of extraction is estimated at $20-30 per barrel. What are we waiting for? We can solve several economic and environmental problem with shale oil extracted with the heaters and CO2 injection. Too bad the video ends in the middle.
One reason could be that the cost is true only for a very small quantity of shale oil.
Production rate is expected to be very low for shale oil becuase of the energy required per barrel.
It's also a risky investment. If you use a lot of energy the price of of that energy source goes up further increasing the cost of extraction and decreasing your ROI. I think investors see the problems involved in scaling up shale oil extraction to the millions of barrels per day. Not a good investment imo.
Taxpayers shouldn't fund the shale oil, the oil companies should. Any risk should be theirs alone. The reported water use is 3 gallons per gallon of oil. The gov't estimates water use of 200 average for a gallon of ethanol. Which is better?! Canada burns 2 gallons of oil sands to get a gallon of oil, in situ thermal extraction doesn't have that significant of a requirement.
@bdist - one of the energy concepts is to use the oil itself while underground to heat the remaining structure. That way very little additional energy is required for extraction. Alternately, oil companies have found a way to convert shale oil in situ into natural gas. That is one reason America is becoming natural gas independent.

Done right, it could reduce pollution over how oil is extracted in 3rd world countries.

@zigsauer ----------- a one world government gives us the lowest common denominator with the administration corruption of the UN.

@randydutton1 Who's us - Who's them
The "lowest common denominator" is the goal
a rootless formless mass who is easy to turn into any shape
