At that time, Joseon called itself "大明東屏 (The Eastern Fence at the border of the Great Ming Dynasty)"(崔益鉉『勉菴集』「持斧伏闕斥倭議疏」).
During the Ching Dynasty, when Chinese envoys came, the Joseon king greeted them at the Yeongeunmun Gate (迎恩門) with a certain ritual. The ritual goes like this: the Joseon king kneels down and pounds his forehead 9 times on the dirt (三跪九叩頭). On the other hand, going to China to pay tribute, the Joseon envoys couldn't get inside the guest palace. The place to stay for them was a shabby house.
Ching dictated tribute codes to Joseon. For example, gold and silver treasures, farm animals, and a lot of virgins. Also, Ching required Joseon to report the situation in Japan (倭情). Since Ching was cautious about Japan, when Joseon presented a torchere to the Nikko Toshogu Shrine (日光東照宮) in Japan, it was done with permission of the Ching Dynasty. At that time, the words on Korean flag read, "大清国属 (Belonging to the Great Ching Dynasty)".

没有冒犯现在的蒙族人的意思，今天56个民族是一家，但当时的12、13世纪，那时的中国人，是大宋的子民，不是今日“中华民族”的统称。汉人的江山被蒙古人的铁蹄践踏，中原人被屠杀者之众，直有好几千万，崖山之役天绝大宋，最后十万军民跳海自尽，何等惨烈。
成吉思汗作为一个征服者的确了不起，但竟然把他当英雄来歌颂？我作为一个普通的汉人，哪怕祖上早就有了许多血统，嘿嘿，对这种本末倒置之事真是无话可说。

During the Ching Dynasty, when Chinese envoys came, the Joseon king greeted them at the Yeongeunmun Gate (迎恩門) with a certain ritual. The ritual goes like this: the Joseon king kneels down and pounds his forehead 9 times on the dirt (三跪九叩頭). On the other hand, going to China to pay tribute, the Joseon envoys couldn't get inside the guest palace. The place to stay for them was a shabby house.

Ching dictated tribute codes to Joseon. For example, gold and silver treasures, farm animals, and a lot of virgins. Also, Ching required Joseon to report the situation in Japan (倭情). Since Ching was cautious about Japan, when Joseon presented a torchere to the Nikko Toshogu Shrine (日光東照宮) in Japan, it was done with permission of the Ching Dynasty. At that time, the words on Korean flag read, "大清国属 (Belonging to the Great Ching Dynasty)".
