Rule 55 for the British Railways was to Stop your train outside of the Signal Box and warn the Signal Man that their train was still on the Main Line. Sadly this rule was not enforced properly and some accidents ocurred.
Thats a great example why government regulation is important and can save lives and money. The conservative mantra of "the market will work it out" just doesnt happen in a lot of cases.
I have seen a lot of crashes I live near Jerome in 2002 a Eastern Idaho train hit a potato truck and derailed it was the worst wreck in Magic Valley history.
I live near Honesdale, Pa. Here was the "Birthplace Of The American Railroad". This is where the first steam engine to run on tracks was run. Also near here is the largest concrete railroad structure in the world. Known as the Tunkhannock Creek Viaduct. An arch railroad bridge connecting two mountains.
