What is the point of heating the oil? Oil floats on top of water (unless you use the same technique as BP did in the Gulf of Mexico) and when you dump the water into the pot, the oil floats on top of the water. I guess you can let the oil heat to about 400-500 degrees on accident then pour the water into the pot to get a big surprise.....
That looks like the rice I get in the Pakistani restaurant. Nowhere else do they make the rice grains so separate. Maybe this is their secret. Thank you.
I love you Sheba but I must say, being able to cook rice in five or ten minutes with a pressure cooker doesn't save me any time when I have to remember to soak the rice for an hour anyway. Is there something I am missing because, I cant recount all the occasions where I needed rice on short notice but dont want to compromise on the fabulous flavour I get from your recipes.
Me 5 min for rice, unsoaked, thats cook time, pressure time (like she says) is about 2-3 min. Don't use more than medium heat, you'll burn the bottom.
lovely, I have an Indian store close by what spices would you suggest. They have a lot of whole grains, rice and whole spices. Would you always infuse them with oil and heat?
Don't got cumin seeds, but cumin powder and I don't got a pressure cooker, but an expensive japanese rice cooker. Can I add the powder and oil in with the basmati rice into the rice cooker?
@roan33 - you can certainly cook it in a rice cooker. However, if you do not have cumin seeds I would suggest that you use 1/8 of onion and thinly slice it and fry the onions till light brown and then add rice and let it cook till done.
Thanks for your videos - they're great! However in the instruction manual of my PC is specifically warns against cooking rice and other starches as they can foam up and clog the steam release valve, causing to much pressure inside the PC - hence an explosion. Perhaps soaking the rice beforehand as you suggest and making sure it's clear before placing in the PC is KEY? Not sure...just wondering... Thanks again!
Yes - you need to soak and wash the rice. I usually use Basmati rice and have never had the problem. But as always it is best to follow directions and be safe.
You didn't stir the cummen. Yeah I would have add a stir in there before putting the lid on as well as the salt. I really got to try the chicken and vegetable broth though. Thanks. ~D
Hi, Can I still cook rice without soaking? I sometimes go out in a hurry and forget to soak rice, so could you please suggest how to cook just plain rice without soaking and without cumin seeds. Lets say I want to cook one cup of rice in pressure cooker and I just want it plain. How long do I cook? I would really appreciate your help.
Make sure that you wash the rice well. You will know that when the water does not become cloudy, Cumin seeds are not a requirement, they add flavor. Rest you can follow my method.
As soon as the pressure builds turn off the heat and do not open the cooker.
Check back the video at 3:20. Let the rice cook itself in the steam of the pressure. The pressure should be able to release on its own. Once the pressure is fully released open the pressure cooker and you should have cooked rice.
That's a Fagor P-cooker, pressure is adequate when yellow pin pop's-up, which is before the steam goes "wooosh" and is raging out the valve.
Environmentally safe?
An exploding pressure cooker most likely caused the death an elderly Pike County woman. Fern Mullins, had been canning vegetables and the pressure cooker exploded. Reported by: Web Producer
I have several and use both aluminum and stainless steel. Have no preferece. Stainless steel is easier to maintain. Aluminum easily looses color after few washes in dish washer.
Doesn't your pressure cooker's vent clog up from the rice frothing or foaming? Some pressure cooker manufacturers want you to cook rice in a bowl inside the pressure cooker. Mine's still sitting in its box, I'm getting a lot of inspiration first from your videos.
Did you soak the rice and washed it before cooking. If you do not want to use oil then I would suggest do not cook in a pressure cooker. Simply boil it and drain out the water. Watch my video on Biryani - I boil the rice and then use the boiled rice for the biryani. You can boil the rice a bit longer add salt and your rice will be done.
How do u keep your kitchen so clean.I also have gas oven and I have the steel stands.I try to clean them and but yours are so clean. How do you clean them.I love your recipes especially the fish with mustard oil.Infact ,I learned how to cook fish from your recipe.
Thx for your nice comment. I am glad I could be of some help.
As to the stands, I usually put them in the dish washer and it does the cleaning for me. There are some oven cleaners that get the rust out. So you can try those if your oven has spots.
wow, I'll try this. It takes 45 minutes to cook in a rice cooker and sometimes gets crispy on the bottom which I don't like. Thanks for this tip. I guess I have to start shopping for a pressure cooker.

@hemiv8power - Yes if you count soaking the rice for one hour - most people would be doing other things during that time.
I usually soak lentils and rice over night to cook the next day.

Basmati rice turns out better when soaked. Also some of the starch gets removed so the rice grains do not stick to each other.
Try cooking without soaking and you will note the difference
