lol, i love this song just becuz the lyrics are so garbage that its funny..."things could be different, but they're not." lolololol, he's so gay, im totally torenting this song
I love the album version of this, but the lyrics seem so much stronger without the layers of other musical elements. Parts of the song that I thought were decent before just hit me right in the heart now.
"Because we're both so mean/ And it's my favorite scene/ But the cruelty is so predictable/ it makes you sad on the stage"
And
"I've been dodging lamps and vegetables/Throw them all in my face/ I don't care."
@KonzoleKing lol, I'm gonna brag about how I don't understand these lyrics and whine and whine about him not playing an instrument that I can't spell to my liking, and I'm gonna tell it to ppl like you who DO get it and DO enjoy it.
@KonzoleKing I think it's fairly obvious that you're trolling. At the same time, if there's the slightest chance that you are completely cereal, you owe it to yourself to check out the album version of this song. I feel like its really hard for anyone to not like it. Yeah, "things could be different but they're not" isn't really that deep taken out of context, but this song really is pretty lyrically sound. If you just read the lyrics, you'll probably get it. It's def a different style tho.
Kevin Barnes is a genius and one of the most talented musicians/artists of the modern day. People can say otherwise but music is rather saturated now with only the majority in mind, its nice to have something as pure as his music around. FOK THE HATERS.
@FrostieDragon probably cause it doesn't make a difference in the world whether 20 people dislike the video or 20,000 people dislike it... it's just a number that doesn't affect anything..
This is good. I picked up on different words/verses than in the album version. But, I definitely like the album version better. Even with its eclectic sound, the album version is morose and melancholy without even trying.
The past is a grotesque animal- And in its eyes you see- How completely wrong you can be- How completely wrong you can be- The sun is out, it melts the snow that fell yesterday- Makes you wonder why it bothered-I fell in love with the first cute girl that I met- Who could appreciate Georges Bataille- Standing at Swedish festival discussing "Story of the Eye"- It's so embarrassing to need someone like I do you- How can I explain, I need you here and not here too
I thought the album version was brutal, but this tops it. Not just in the way its fantastically depressing tone somehow screams volumes louder, but the few places where the lyrics differ send this version to a whole different level. "I'd give anything to have fun again." "Sometimes I wonder if you're mythologizing me like I do you. It's better if we do. I don't want to know the real you." This album is perhaps the best album of the last decade, with this song as its crown jewel, in my opinion.

This is awful. I love indie music, I love music in general, but for Of Montreal's usual standard...this is embarrassing. This is the kind of song I like to call an "album filler" where a band gets a basic chord progression and turns it into a 6 min + song. Get it together guys.
his expression while he sings it makes me want to cry. I don't think I've ever seen anyone so emotionally attached to his work before, and not because it's special, but because we barely have any real artists in this world anymore .. and barely any of them are famous on any level.
I think it's kind of odd that they put a shotgun microphone near the end of the guitar, just to capture the "screech" you hear when he changes chords.
I liked that 10 mins of the same shit. Gratz Indy fags, your indy cause you cling to an image of unique superiority, when in reality the reason most of this shit isn't popular, is cause its defying the purpose of music in general; To display emotions in the form of sound. Now maybe im crazy, but super fucking repetition, is not a emotion.
@MouZer77. Dude, get off the video if you don't like it. This song is the fucking embodiment of depression, which as I recall, is a very real and very emotional thing. The repetition itself is part of the message. I prefer the album version, but seriously. You bitch about indie fans (which you spell wrong) thinking they're superior, then you call them fags. Just because you can't appreciate a song doesn't mean it isn't a valid form of emotional expression.
@MouZer77 Wow that's the most retarded argument I've ever heard. Music is an art form therefore there is no right or wrong. If you actually listened to what he's saying maybe you could appreciate the lyricism. The last time I checked, the guitar in most acoustic songs tends to be a bit repetitious. And who the hell are you to say what is the "purpose of music?" Not everyone gets a false sense of superiority from listening to certain types of music but you seem to get it from bashing music.
@capNsmazz you can keep this "music" in your own way, and Ill keep it in mine. Im not saying Im better then any of you, I just despise this genre of music, and all types and forms of it. These are just my opinions, they are not fact, no music can really be "better" then anther. But to me, this shit is super lame, untalented, and childish.
@capNsmazz you, sir, are clearly uneducated in the finer points of ebonics. Calling someone an "Indy fag", it means that they are a person who enjoys music of the Indie genre, and nothing more or less. Its more or less a term of endearment, basic affectionate sarcasm. And whats wrong with being called a fag anyways? Are you some kind of fucking homophobic? Does the concept of two people of the same sex together bother you? We are all inherently a little gay. Its just human nature.
@yada147258 oh ok so i'm a faggot? get your facts straight. i don't blow anything and i'm not gay. in fact i'm female. you're not insulting me any. you're just wasting your time by coming back here to talk more shit and wasting your time on this "shit that blows"
I am glad that Kevin Barnes exists. I would go gay for him. This is pure poetry, so simple but yet I felt like none of it has ever been said. "Things could be different, but they're not." See what I mean?? Not to mention there is no chorus, no verses, no bridge, but yet it never gets repetitive. Well not to me at least.
@yada147258 wow you are ignorant. Kevin Barnes is straight and has a child. do your homework before you make a fool of yourself. actually just get a life other than talking shit about incredible/intelligent musicians of which you know nothing about. thank you.

@womenpedaling alright alright calm down, thanks for that information because it's interesting and relevant but quit expecting everyone to be Of Montreal gurus like yourself... :)
@Crazycalifornianman wait wait wait whoa whoa whoa! are you high on crystal meth sir? how is this song repetitive? in what way is it? please clarify.... how is this not creative? are you listening to the lyrics? are the words too big for you? are we listening to the same song? is crystal meth really that powerful? sir i am just trying to help you dont take this into offence.. i am just very concerned about your unstable drug infested mind
@kingjstin Look, I'm a poet, a bassist, a violinist, and a guitarist. What this is amateur guitar-playing, and amateur poetry. It doesn't really have direction, it's a few chords plucked over and over again. The lyrics itself may be meaningful to him, but he can't expect the general public to be able to decipher his random babble. There's not even a catchy tune, or rhyme scheme... His voice is untrained, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but in the combination with the other failures in this
@Crazycalifornianman Dude when did music have to be so professional like a job?you should make music that makes you or others feel good.plus i garuntee this guy is bigger than you in every way possible wana know why?because he is a artist and not a pussy who makes perfect boreing music.
@Crazycalifornianman i say get out of the house, leave your bass and violin for a while, have a wander for a few years, understand more about life's bell curve and then go back to your music: i am sure you'll be a better poet and most of all you'll start grasping the million meanings this song has. Unfortunately the general audience is as useless as most of the popular music on this planet, i wouldn't bother pleasing them either.
Dude, whoah. This song has so much meaning, how the fuck can you not understand what it's about, really? Don't you feel a connection to anything he sings? Especially this acoustic version hits me in the guts.
@Skwurlman Look, I'm a poet, a bassist, a violinist, and a guitarist. His voice is untrained, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but in the combination with the other failures in this
@Crazycalifornianman Look, I realize you are like 16. I wouldn't expect you to understand these lyrics. I suppose you can say this song is repetitive but maybe that is only because its just him with a guitar? Maybe you should listen to this song with the band? You act so arrogant, damn who are you? Elvis Presley? I knew you weren't dead!
So what man. I gotta admit, the guitar-playing isn't mindblowing or anything, but the lyrics really aren't random gibberish. I'm totally not the kind of person to over-analyze songs and be a complete dick giving meanings to things that aren't there, but this song makes sense. It's not THAT abstract.
haven't listened to this song in ages, but theres a short film by spike jonze out at the minute called "i'm here"... it's pretty incredible, but there's a scene where this is being played at a concert in it. watched it earlier and thought, fuck i need to listen to that again. i'd thoroughly recommend "i'm here" to people who enjoyed lost in translation... 30minutes long. enjoy.
This really is one of my favorite of Montreal songs, I really like this version because of the way it highlights the lyrics, which...well are amazing <3
I dunno what to think of this performance...maybe he was just too sad by the end of it to do all of those last lines...he skipped over a bunch at the end...i dunno...

I knew you weren't dead!
kingjstin 1 year ago
@Crazycalifornianman

30minutes long. enjoy.

I'm officially addicted to this song: this version, especially. I think oM should do an acoustic album.

I listen to this song in two ways.....
sometimes I listen to it to hear the words and the story
other times I listen to it just to hear how beautiful Kevin Barne's voice dances along the vibrations of the guitar
