I think Natalie's parents restrictions made this movie! If Besson was able to play out the romantic angle, we would have had another cheezy Love And Bullets movie. Making Reno a fatherly figure made us feel for him more at the end, since we we all sad at the loss of Natalie's "real father" at the end of the movie. I'm sure Besson thought he could do a typical European love-sex-innocence movie, but in reality, that version would have never seen the light of day in Conservative Amerika.

@MrMcPang I've seen the film several times, it's one of my favorites of Besson's films and I believe it was a legitimate love story between two people, the tragedy being the consequences that brought them together and of course the vast age difference between them. Leon does have feelings for her but it disturbs him to the point that to his credit he doesn't act on them, he is awakened, brought back to life from a "dead" world he had dwelled in for so long by this young girl.

And the russian roulette scene is suitable because the whole movie is about death anyways, so to speak. i think that what is so beautiful about the relationship that they have is that leon understands her feelings. and even though he doesn't feel the same way for her he doesn't patronize her or treat her like a child.
The original script was much more heavy. I think it would have been banned in the States. I understand that Besson gave up to it in excange of having Portman, the truth is that in the original screenplay the girl was supposed to be older, it would have been sick to see Natalie performing such a thing.
Not director's cut. It was the full version, released abroad before they did here (in US complete version came in 2000, due to more straight-laced/judgmental audience and fear of scaring off viewers before). I bought the full version. It is wonderful. My eldest was a bit put off by the girl's age, but otherwise my entire family loved the film.
I, of course, wold not encourage such a union, but the movie is so great due to the sexual tension the characters experience, as well as genuine feelings for each other.

Actually a sequel named MATHILDA was written by BESSON and PORTMAN read the script and she says that was very good,,but the problem was that she and BESSON says that without RENO the movie have no soul and they dont want to screw up...so that was the real reason
I think part of what made the movie memorable was the girl's background. Dysfunctional family, losing everyone...and then Leon...he could have been a total monster. Instead, they found the humanity in both these characters and were able to both give love and maintain innocence, for both of them.

And the russian roulette scene is suitable because the whole movie is about death anyways, so to speak. But a 45-50 year old man and an 11 year old sharing sex/love would've casued much controversy at the time.

The original script was much more heavy. I think it would have been banned in the States. I understand that Besson gave up to it in excange of having Portman, the truth is that in the original screenplay the girl was supposed to be older, it would have been sick to see Natalie performing such a thing.

Not director's cut. It was the full version, released abroad before they did here (in US complete version came in 2000, due to more straight-laced/judgmental audience and fear of scaring off viewers before). I bought the full version. It is wonderful. My eldest was a bit put off by the girl's age, but otherwise my entire family loved the film.

Actually a sequel named MATHILDA was written by BESSON and PORTMAN read the script and she says that was very good,,but the problem was that she and BESSON says that without RENO the movie have no soul and they dont want to screw up...so that was the real reason

I think part of what made the movie memorable was the girl's background. Dysfunctional family, losing everyone...and then Leon...he could have been a total monster. Instead, they found the humanity in both these characters and were able to both give love and maintain innocence, for both of them.

Just watched it on indieplex (I've seen it before, but didn't know about the deleted scene.) Unfortunately this scene was not on the indieplex version and I think it's sad because it's such an important scene.

Were there two versions of this movie made?
One French and the other American.
My wife and daughter loved this movie, they found it on "The Movie Channel" or something and forced me to watch it.
I just wanted to see how Gary Oldman was gonna behave in this one.
Did not disappoint.
Some people will never understand this very simple love story.
Leon kicks serious ass, Gary is crazier than bat-shit, and that little girl earned an Oscar long before "Black Swan"!

In the original script, Léon and Mathilda were supposed to make love after this conversation, but Natalie's parents were against this and also this would have given a wrong signal to society, so they changed it. But I still love to think they did spend a night together and this makes their relationship even more special. All who think Léon-Mathilda love affair in the film is pedo or whatever, are narrow-minded. Grow up...

I saw this movie when I was 11 years old and I was completely mesmerized by it's power, and especially by an unbelievable face of a 13 year old girl, I still can't believe how much affection I felt for her character. 10 years ago I saw this movie for the second time and the only thing that changed was the fact I understood it better. I saw it again yesterday and it blew my mind once again. People who see pedophilia in Leon are either retarded or suffer from complete lack of soul. Brilliant film!
