Hello the song is God rest ye merry, gentlemen, a classic christmas english song. Loreena Mc kennit sing it on her album winter's garde wich is brilliant.
Um..no. thanks for playing, please try again. Sting is talented and does have a lot of good music...this "copy" is not one of them. Almost made my ears bleed with the scratchy off pitch tone...uugg!!!!
More 'soul' than all the pop of the last 20 years(..it's all mind control child abuse anyway..so an unfair comparison...)Sting is the Picasso of modern music...a few brushtrokes lead us to where we all began.
Nice to hear a full song from "If On A Winter's Night" at YT because from/with my german Account I was not able to Upload one of them... So, thank you for that!
On the album it's "Soul Cake" but the real title is "A' soalin'" (search on Tube or in the net...) written by Paul of Peter Paul and Mary. It contains references to different medieval tunes: "hey oh, nobody home" and "god rest ye merry gentlemen" but this doesen't mean that this is a reworking of an ancient tune. It's just a 1968 song based on english folklore, that Sting interpreted here changing the title (the reason is not clear to me but...)
Love this song and this is a nice version. I love Mary Black's version though. It is so real, I can just see the poor little hungry kids going from manor house to manor house hoping for some food or money. Thank you for posting. I did enjoy this version.
@chattypatra - wrong..it is a Soul cake..people went a-souling around All hallows eve quote from the OED ."The old English custom of "soul-caking," or "souling," originated in pre-Reformation days, when singers went about on All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, November 1 and 2, to beg for cakes in remembrance of the dead." This is a lovely version of a very old song.
@jannyg47: @jannyg47 - No, he gave it that name on his album because the song is more commonly known by it. If you do a little Internet research, you will learn the truth.
@chattypatra Wrong ! It is correctly titled here as A Soul Cake..people went a-souling around All Hallows Eve in pre-reformation England , to beg for cakes in remembrance of the dead. This is a lovely version of a very old song.
Musicalmente Sting mi sembra sempre più triste. Ma poi perché abbiamo completamente adottato Halloween qui in Italia? Non è la nostra tradizione, è celtica. Mah...
@cheetah063 Historically, there is a tie-in with Halloween and Christmas traditions in Ireland and the British Isles as the line became blurred over the past few centuries. A Peter, Paul, and Mary YouTube video talks about it was originally a Halloween song. Go to Kristen Lawrence's web site and look up her Bibliography sources to learn more.
sting is very passionate and into music and i respect him for that, he aint a sell out like most singers/musicians these days with their commercial shit!

@vampireofstyx What rock do you live under? Sting used to be the lead singer for The Police, but has been doing a lot of brilliant solo work. Look it up!
@TheBeccamom What are you talking about man? What is all this gibberish you say to me. And when did the police start a band? Surely, it is not the speech of the 21st century.
very talented man. in all fairness i know xfactors all fair with the talent tht goes on but he can slag em. he can coz he pisses on every artist ive seen on there.. and hes from NEWCASTLE!
I don't think people get this song... it is a great song... it is like an old English folk song...talking about the origins of our halloween custom of begging for soulcakes... it is what country people did in the winter... from door to door... I love how smart Sting is...and his songs are brilliant he is such an old soul
@timothyj1966 You are right about the Halloween tie-in from this English folk song. Organist Kristen Lawrence has made two Halloween versions of the Souling Song tune. Her Souling Song is on YouTube. It is interesting to compare Sting's Christmas and Kristen's Halloween arrangements.
@TheBeccamom thanks for clarifying... was cool of him to reintroduce this folk song from times past, he always tells a good story with his songs... I will have to look up the recipe for a soulcake... is it like a hot cross bun, think I read that somwhere... thats the religious tie-in to souls day... ?
@timothyj1966 i think its about xmas pudding i think i remember him saying on radio 3 or something, and it was a northern thing at xmas that they begged for anything to mash up hence the random and fluctuating ingredients of xmas pudding, i may be wrong
@timothyj1966 this was done in a round. it is a Christmas song, not for Halloween. they were allowed to go a-begging during the Christmas season. Sting even incorporated some of the holiday music into this version. The children were hoping for food or perhaps a penny. If they land owners didn't have a penny, then a half penny would do. If they didn't have a half penny, the God bless you. The 'rich landowners' were in worse shape than the poor children that were begging.
@brNNNbrNNN in the middle ages in Britain around all Souls day ( Nov 1st ) poor children would go door to door begging for a "soul cake" which was like a small cake - biscuit - in return for the cake the children promised to pray for the souls - the dead of the house that gave them the cake - hence - this is where trick-or-treating stemmed out of..... hope that helps you
This is the worst. I mean THE WORST song ever. I hate this. This is so bad song that I mentally die everytime I hear this. I can't even imagine how someone can make bad song as this. @xPalle69x this is an old english song like hundreds of years old... about going a souling like trick or treating..... its origins..... Sting is smart to resurrect important history like this and revamp it... he is brilliant....
I hated this song SO MUCH at work. It played constantly until the lyrics were burned into my brain. It's even an inside joke at the work place. But now that the xmas rush is over, it kind of has grown on me.

Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul and Mary) wrote it together with Tracey Batteast & Elena Mezetti, based on the English folk song "Hey ho, nobody home". First released on Peter, Paul and Mary's second album, "Moving" (1963).

Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul and Mary) wrote it together with Tracey Batteast & Elena Mezetti, based on the English folk song "Hey ho, nobody home". First released on Peter, Paul and Mary's second album, "Moving" (1963).
