Hey great video! I wondered what the difference would be like between gas and electric but I saw just as must power a capability as a gas powered splitter. Thank you for your posting. Sincerely hobocat451 clear for now...
@radbcc I did heat exclusively with wood I split with this splitter the last few years. I have wood split with it this year, but not enough for the whole winter. I was out of town for work last winter too much to cut down enough trees. So now I only have about 2 cord of wood for this winter. Last winter I went through about 7 cord. I hired a high schooler to come cut up my down trees, but about 1/2 of that is still out in the woods behind the house. If I don't do it, it doesn't get done.
@radbcc P.S. The splitter did have a flat tire this fall when I got it out of the shed. That is the first maintenance I have ever done on it since I got it. It is out by my wood pile under a tarp now. The guy I hired to split some of my wood built the pile on top of my heavy duty extension cord, so it it stuck under there till I move the wood pile. Naturally I could move the splitter, but there is still wood to split and I don't have time to do it at the moment.
Another great advantage of your machine is no damn fumes man a gas log splitter would have so much noise and exhaust fumes.I love clean quiet electric.I have a 6 ton electric and never have wanted or needed a gas one.Nice video thanks...
I love this 16ton unit - I have the 5T TF and the 7T HF units and sort of wish I went bigger - mostly due to how fast the cycling time is on this 16T unit the ram is fast.
I dont get it...looks like you have a small electric cord for it...I gotta go look up the specs on this unit for watts/amps. Thx for sharing this vid.
Sure this will sound a tad silly, but give it some thought.
That is: You may want to consider digging a 1 or 2 foot hole in the ground where you stand. Standing lower in relationship to the splitter will be lots easier on your back if you do.
And
Respectfully I remind you, lift with your knees NOT YOUR BACK........
Looks nice! I live in the city and split maybe 3-5 face cords a season. Not sure if it would be worth spending $1000 for that much wood. I would like an electric one but hate the little onces you need to get on your knees....I'm 6'2" and that would be alot of bending..........Warranty only 1 year? Do you think these things could last 10+ years without many repairs?
@Jeremy102579 I am new to this machine, but if you think about it, its just a gearbox and hydraulic. The amount of time you use it would need a small amount of maintenance. My guess is at least 10 years if it's not cheaply made.
@1timby I believe they sell those 4 blade ends. I have never used one, but I think the lower side split chunks would get stuck between the rail and the blade. I also won't buy a vertical splitter with a moving blade rather than the moving flat ram and fixed blade. When a log doesn't split and is stuck on the blade, I can back it up and put another short log behind it and push it the rest of the way through. If the log was stuck on the ram, that would be difficult to work around/under.
@1timby We tried it on the electric spliter similar to the one in the video with a cross blade and it tripped the breakers in the house splitting large pieces. Uncle bought it used.
Prefer the old fashion way by axe. Keeps you in shape.
@Laofse You are correct. However, the benefit to more tonnage is that the ram can move faster. A one pound splitter would work if you geared it down low enough. In the same way, a 100 ton splitter could split a log in about a 1 second snap. If you are going to split 7 to 10 cord of wood every year like I do and don't have weeks to do it, you want a splitter where the ram moves fast enough to get the job done without waiting 15 to 30 seconds between each cycle.
@DeWitteB Not as loud as a gas engine splitter. I don't have to wear ear protection with this one. The loudest thing when I am splitting with this one is the sound of the log splitting.
It is made in the USA by a company called Ram Splitter. It is a nice splitter. The weakest point about it is the slightly wobbly front leg. But it hasn't been a problem. If it was sturdier, it would also be bigger and heavier and I'd complain about that then.
I made this video because I was looking for a video showing a heavy duty electric splitter, and coulnd' t find one. All other electric splitter videos have a guy kneeling by a tiny splitter and splitting one little stick.
This is a horizontal which I prefer to both vertical and dual orintation. Dual are WAY to high to lift wood onto all day long. Vertical I don't like because rolling a piece of a log back on for a second and third chop is easier than sliding/wiggling the piece back into place. Also, since on verticals the ram blade moves through the log, if it gets stuck (all do at times) the log is stuck on the moving ram rather then the fixed frame; hard to add second log to push the first off.
I allmost purchase this splitter but bought a PTO model instead. It looks like it works really well. My only comment is that wood splitter direct offers a four way wedge and a cradle and would really make the job a lot easier on the back.

Is this the source of fuel for heat for your home?

@Jeremy102579 It's better to have a lower machine. You want to lift heavy wood 4 feet in the air, or get some knee pads and lift it 1 foot? :)

Could the unit be fitted with a multi-spline spitting edge so that a log would be split in 4 instead of in half?

16 tons, that's overkill, you can split the entire tree with that.
Your machine is huge to mine.
I have an 8 ton electric that splits everything I've put to it like 36 in rounds.
I can lift and carry it around easily and lift into the truck or put into the back seat of the car.
I like that you don't have the gas and oil messes or maintenance nor the load noise.
there much more portable friendly.

@icicicles 4 tons is enough for regular firewood, actually, unless it's some really hard or crooked wood.

Nice video & nice demo. How much would I expect my electric bill to go up if I used it all day? Anybody have any idea? Thank you very much!
