Also, more objectively, this version has more variation to it - everytime it's about to get repetitive, there's some new gag or intonation to prevent that. I don't hear this much of it in Berberian's original.

As for "subtle" humor, aside from winks and nudges, I quite like the ambiguous humorous undertones in some of the "joyful uptempo movements" from classical and baroque periods - like when you know it was intended to convey a "good mood", but you just don't quite know whether the composer (or performer) allowed himself a small chuckle under his pokerface when coming up with the idea :)
Like for example the Brandenburg Concertos in the Musica Antiqua Köln recordings.
Also like that kind of thing because it always depends on the performer to bring out those things (and who knows whether it's the performer's own addition, or the composer's intention??) - one might sound entirely serious, while the other one not so much.
Not sure how that aspect works with "quotes", but I couldn't hear the Tristan reference in the cakewalk :D
Also like Alkan for that reason - a lot of times, he seems to be walking the thin line of seriousness and parody.
