The glory of Rome. They set the roots for the modern languages of europe, and were influential in english too. They formed the boundaries of the modern countries of europe, and spread the love of literature and philosophy and even christianity. For better or worse, the world would be very different were it not for that city state, that became a great power.
When Augustus reigned alone upon earth, the many kingdoms of men came to an end. And when Thou wast made man of the pure Virgin, the many gods of idolatry were destroyed. The cities of the world passed under one single rule;and the nations came to believe in one sovereign Godhead. The peoples were enrolled by the decree of Caesar; and we, the faithful, were enrolled in the name of the Godhead, when Thou, our God, wast made man.
It would be nearly impossible to include Italy in Civilization alongside Rome, because half their cities would be the same, or extremely similar..
-Rome/Rome
-Pisae/Pisa
-Neapolis/Naples
Most of them are not a big deal, like the Byzantium/Constantinople/Istanbul thing, but Rome/Rome would be a big problem seeing as they are both the capitol (the most important city), and have the EXACT SAME NAME... :/
Note that I /do/ support Italy being in the game (in addition to Rome, of course), despite what I said four months ago. Four months ago, I didn't have the expansions, and didn't know that they added both the HRE and Germany. Ugh. Also, Rome and Byzantium.
@BartzFFXVI Don't underestimate the Netherlands. They used to be the only power allowed to trade with the Japanese. ;) A real world power they've never been, but they used to have a strong navy and also they were taken seriously in the 17th century. They even triggered a Revolution in England in the late 17th century.
It's kinda stupid how Italy isn't included in the game, since it's definately one of the most influential european nations. Yes, i know the Romans where a civilization from the Italian peninsula, but they have nothing to do with the Italian state that covers Sardinia, Sicily, the Italian Peninsula and the Po Valley today.
@Ascensiam Prolly would. Wiki him and scroll down to the inappropriate comments section. They are HILARIOUS and usually spot-on, only other politicians and females could be offended by his wit.
@Ascensiam@BartzFFXVI That's because of Earth maps. The starting location for a civ on a map of a real area is the location of their capital city, and since Rome and Italy have the same capital (namely, Rome the city), including them both just couldn't happen, so they had to choose only one.
Also, England is distinct from Britain, Greece is distinct from the modern Hellenic Republic, Persia is distinct from Iran, but no-one complains about /those/. Not to mention Pharaonic Egypt/Islamic Egypt.
@Ascensiam Yes, that's what I was saying; many civs are distinct from real-world nations that are often considered "close enough", but it's rare for people to complain about them.
I'm still hoping on Scotland and/or Poland for Civ V, though.
@eiffelTowerMan Perhaps, as long as Poland has a presence in /some/ form. Or maybe Poland and Lithuania could be separate civilizations, but throw in a new "personal union" game mechanic allowing two civs to merge temporarily.
@kennercat Hmm... Personal unions would actually be an excellent idea, allowing the British to appear if both the English and the Scottish are also in the game. It could also be used to create the Soviet Union if the Ukrainians, Belarusians, Kazakhs, Georgians, Armenians, Azerbaijanis, or another USSR member state are introduced. An Arabian/Egyptian union could allow for something similar to modern Egypt. Rome could be replaced with Italy, and a Greek/Italian union becoming Rome.
@kennercat However, Romans spoke Latin, not Italian, and most modern Italians are tuscon/sicilian. It's like saying Russians are the exact same thing as Siberian tribes, or an a lesser note, Javanese and Balinese people in Indonesia. I'm not trying to offend you, or prove i'm better, but it's nice to debate history and video games at the same time.
@TriangleGenix True, true, though I don't think language is much of an issue, otherwise they wouldn't have both America and England (the latter of which really ought to be Britain). However, since I posted that I changed my mind about the whole Italy/Rome thing for one main reason: I got BtS, and they have both the HRE and Germany.
An alternate solution: Have the name change at certain dates, so the Italians start as Etruria, becoming Rome around 753 BC, and later Italy. Other civs similarly.
@TriangleGenix Yes, but it wasn't the Roman home territory - after all, Spain had Mexico, Central America, and Peru, but no-one says that the Aztecs, Maya, and Inca should be removed!
The opening fanfare of the modern version is so epic, it makes it one of the best songs in the game(Behind Catherine's and Boudica's and tied with Ragnar's.)
The first seconds of the 2nd always reminds me of an epic gladiator fight about to start in a crowded colosseum with an imaginary announcer yelling "Let the games begin!"
He had a great saying: I myself am a great leader, my son not half as good and all the others after him complete imbeciles. following Romes Emperors it might just seem right
