I live in southeast Louisiana and I remember being so terrified when it hit 175.....and i tell ya, as horrible as Katrina WAS...thank god it didnt stay at 175...becuz the Cat 5 surge was devastating enough..if we had gotten winds that extreme........MAN
@nanzee403 It was still a TD. Here in Ohio, my friends who already lived here back then (I moved here later) remember the power going out and school closing for 3-7 hurricane days because it hit as a Tropical Storm. winds 45-60 MPH.

I remember that, I also remember Cantorie saying "this is the worst category 1 hurricane i've been through"
after I heard that, i got concerned about Katrina, and look what happened

I think it was at this point when I evacuated from the South East tip of La which is below New Orleans, that was cutting it close.
