I really like that the first thing he does when he sits down is just play some chords! How amazing! No breathtaking silence, just a few graceful touches, as though he was in the comfort of his own home! Papa Horowitz, telling a story to his childeren...
@magicmushroom100 Anyone can play this piece...that doesn't mean that it's a particular achievement, simply to get the notes out. This guy has the most amazing musicality, and honestly, that's what makes it work. His interpretation is superior to many that I've heard.
I'm ten and I can play this piece. I don't really like his way of playing it though. It;s is kind of weird. Also, I don't like how he plays some chords at the beginning.
@musicmushroom100 Well each to his own, and he played the chords to test the damper of the piano so he doesn't blur the music by not knowing how far to hold down the pedal.
@musicmushroom100 I wonder if you'll be playing at the Vienna Musikverien anytime? I don't think so you snotty little brat. Now fuck off and practice your scales a few million times before you dare criticize one of the greatest musicians that ever graced the concert halls of the world.
@musicmushroom100 Until about 80 years ago, preluding before a piece--what Horowitz does here--was a common, even standard practice. As already pointed out, one of the purposes was to try the piano and the performing space, but it was also to prepare the audience for the next piece, etc.
Yes, the performance is stylistically unconventional; but listen again and notice how infinite his dynamic gradations are. He must have 50 different versions of 'p' and 'pp.' Not many possess this range.
@musicmushroom100 What an idiot. Anyone can play the NOTES to this piece. You think thats all that this is about? You have too much to learn to even comment on this video.
It always amazes me how Horowitz can take so many liberties with his Mozart interpretations and yet the result doesn't seem overly indulgent or romanticized! At least to my ears
Oh, my God. With all due respect, this is not the mozart rondo im my impression! The presto tempo is too fast and the tone is unevern. Alas, classical elegance and beauty is nearly completely lost herein. I would like to say Master Horowitz should have stayed beyond Mozart. Maybe romanticism was much better for him.
@chiehwenwang Freedom comes from not making attachments. If something is sublimely played, it matters very little how strictly it observes what may become a restriction. The whole purpose of beauty is to communicate Love, bring Love to life, in this case with sound. And there is so much more to be found in the world when we remove attachments that create limits
@theblueangel28 Art is anything but freedom. Art has certain artistic rules to follow. And please don't try to use "love' to set the boundaries for art. Although art is anything but freedom, art needs freedom. :-)
oh no. Art is expression of one's vision and/or feeling. Thats it. Theres no boundaries, use any modality, any method
I meant freedom for the listener. ie..I can enjoy Aretha Franklins Nessun Dorma b/c I would never limit myself from feeling joy by inappropriately applying an opera standard to a gospel interpretation
And if anyone is doing anything for any reason other than love, writing, singing, listening, or anything at all, then it would be a pretty bleak experience indeed-is what I meant
@chiehwenwang I do not mean at any point to sound like I'm trying to make you "wrong" and something else "right"
I just mean, expression of beauty or truth or skill or whatever can be more enjoyed when the heart is open
i don't mean all expression is beautiful. i don't listen to anything angry, negative, aggressive, violent, or hateful-regardless of the amount of feeling someone is expressing, but i wouldnt limit the tools available to them to use for the purpose of that expression being made
@theblueangel28 Really? Nothing "angry," "negative," "aggressive," or "violent?" Nothing? I hate to think of all the great music (Beethoven's Fifth, Tchaikovsky's 1812, and Holst's Mars, just to name a few, plus half or more of all the operas ever written, not to mention martial music) that you are missing. Emotions that we generally consider "negative" can easily be creative and beautiful.
@Scifinutthrawn i feel you. bu theres a difference between events coming from that place, and relish in the doing. i cant listen to anything that is about abusing others, killing them, expresses hatred toward someone (eminem, death metal etc) or watch films that are about killing others graphically, as entertainment. the storminess of emotion in the pieces you mentioned, or in torch songs etc is not about selling violence, its an expression that comes from those places and is palatable for me
He adds so many of his own little embellishments to the piece without sacrificing ANY of the piece's original integrity or meaning. He is truly the master.

God, the Viennese loved the Maestro, didn't they? What an ovation they gave him when he walked on that stage! What love and adoration.
