But why does a majority of YT guitar videos start and end without hardware and electronics??? If aliens a million years from now start digging in the soil of the Earth and find a old internet computer (yeah, I know ...) they will have no idea that all those shiny and colorful slabs of wood are musical instruments. They'll more likely think it some kind of clubs or weapon used by the primitive race living on earth haha.
Why not take it from old guitar to new guitar all the way ?
i plan on getting this guitar in black Jackson JS32R Dinky, and staining it red burst they make it in a sunburst but when i sand it down is to going to have the same quilted look as the burst or is it just going to be plain wood
i refinished a precission bass a friend gave me , i sanded then primed ,then put 9 coats of black laquer wet sanded then added 6 coats of clear laquer,, came out awsome! added all new tuners ,electronics , babinga wood pick guard done in cherry , chrome and gold accents , custom pinstripping and added thomas edison waterslides to it!
Hey, I'm doing a similar finish on my bass, and this video doesn't really explain things very well, what steps did you take after applying the burst all the way up to completing this project?
how long did you let the guitar sit after the paint was all done and over with? I have heard of people letting them sit for months to properly let the guitar dry out before installing all the electronics and such. that would drive me bananas having to wate months after re-finishing a guitar.
@ralfcaetano if you look at 1:45 - 2:06 it shows the wet sand after the first clear coat, and 2:24 - 2:34 show the wet sand before the third clear coat.

@mikeandikeswoodshop thanks, but who are you? sloppy seconds? just kidden.you need to check out my other guitar build videos.
this isnt my guitar, i just did what the owner wanted me to do. i keep this video on here cuz i think its funny everbody hates it so much.and i never did get to see the thing finished.
How do I reach that particular color on 0:04. Can I just use power the sand to remove the finish or it's also something else you use? I want to apply this finish to my old Squier P Bass, make some vintage sratches and eventually turning it into Relic.
@CubeableGame at 0:04? thats what the guitatr looked like before i started.samebody had striped it down to the mahogany and badly applied a clear coat finish with a brush.
My goal is the original mahogany color in a bit darker tone. (And then apply a varnish to protect the instument from moisture.) Ι don't know how to describe it, but generally similar (not the same) as your guitar in 0:04. Could you recommend me some tools for this work?
if you look at the beginning the horns are sharp and to a point, most likely the extra finishing and coats and whatnot are what made it look round, however if thats is the case it will be overcoated wich can fuck up the wood and ruin the sound,so itll seem like a gibson copy in any way that it plays out,and one more thing, what dumbass refinishes such a beautiful guitar.I scoff at this.
give me a maple neck anytime. i have owned and now own gibsons and fenders. with the headstock angle and the softness of mohogany, its just asking for trouble. headstocks snapping like this one. give me a maple neck les paul deluxe please.
not my guitar!!!! i was paid to do the job, this guitar was in real bad shape before i started working on it.the factory finish had been taken off by power sanding, then a very bad coat of clear full of brush marks and drips.i never did get to see the guitar completed or meet the guy who owns it. it was one of those, threw a friend of a friend deals.
I'm glad you got your hands on an old gibson, it'll never be the same now, but it looked like in horrible shape before. One thing you probably did without even know about that made this thing worthless though....if it wasn't done before...never grind off the serial # even a badly abused instrument is worth something if it can be traced.....no matter what kinda paint it has man.
The guitar needed it, I don't care how much you think character is, This guitar needed a lot of work. Good job, it looks better now. But you should have put painters tape over the gibson lable, and work around it.
big mistake to send, you took off all the patina, and dont know why u didnt keep the GIBSON logo,....big mistake.A professional doesnt work like this....
actually gibson puts a layer of clear laquer between each color ,,it will never look authentic unless you do this(also you can wipe a color if you screw up)
If it were me I would have taped off the name and headstock inlay, let dry , remove the tape then clearcoated the headstock to even out the layers. If it's a Gibson, it should say so. But hey that's just me
can you tell me or show me in a video how you created the burst, I have a japanese import crap les paul and I want to give it a vintage sunburst for that classic look

next time try a smal layer or really thin red right between the natural mohogany and black
its easier to put the red on under the black coat
just a small 3-6mm overlay of the red should be showing
it makes the transition into natural alot less sudden and broad.
great work though
