So it is understandable for Neil to say it without thinking, and he apologized for it on his twitter account immediately afterward.

@napalmocean I suppose it's always about how we interpret words that give them their power - as an Asian British person I'm offended by the word "paki", because of its negative connections to attitudes in the 50s (and later), but many think it is purely a shortening of the term "pakistani" and therefore okay to use. It is solely about how we are effected by words and each person will have a unique reaction. In terms of hurting people, it's always best to err on the side of caution.
