I'm pretty sure you're referring to Speak And Read. My best friend has one, and I haven't played with it in fucking years, I've looked for videos of them on YouTube, but can only find videos of Speak and Read units that have been Circuit Bent, I hate Circuit Bending with a passion, I'd like to find videos of un-modified Speak and Math and Speak and Read units.
in this toy they used a vocoder and a word memory to make it real, in 1973 the Sharp corporation of japan introduced in the market a talking electronic calculator, that uses the same circuit of this toy..
They didnt scare me when I was little which is shocking because now I would not let my kids have this unless they say the voice doesn't scare them. I learned to read, spell and do math by these devices so they are still beneficial to this day, just demonic sounding. Imagine, a machine telling you to "SAY IT!"
You know, they never scaced me either but they do sound a little devilish. I just always loved tech stuff though and never thought of it as being anything to fear. I wish they would make a new version because with todays tech they could put all kinds of learning stuff in one and I know it would sell well. Hey, why don't we invent a new one.
Cool I Remember Speak And Spell... Where do you live? I dont thik there are any around here where i live...but if there is i would have to guess the quanity is very very small... very hard to find items
HERE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I try not to be a party pooper, BUT I CAN'T STAND BLOODY CIRCUIT BENDING, IT GIVES ME NIGHTMARES. I wish people would take these devices for what they are, and not modify them.
There may have been a Japanese version at one point, look it up on Wikipedia. I understand there were German, French and Italian versions, as well as a Spanish and a UK English version.
Sounds like George St. Pierre.

@MrToystory2000 You have to have the yellow spell and say I think it's called version which came out a little later than the speak and spell.

Your S&S appears to have been sold from 1980-85 due to the keys being membrane type rather than buttons.
The 1985-89 versions had a smaller TI logo.

I had this same one,the battery corroded in it and my grandfather was suppose to fix it but never did. It hung in his basement for 14 years!

They are pretty awesome to be so old. I have this yellow one lets you type in words and it pronounces them. Curse words don't work though, lol.

Buy up as many of these as you can before the "circuit benders" destroy them all in their quest to make shitty music. Preserve electronic history!

Do they have a speak and spell Japanese version? 'Cause if they do maybe I could learn and pick up one of those Japanese cuties?
Or atleast I can finaly understand what I've been laughing at in all of those Japanese films I've been watching for years.
