would it come out alright if you spray like a red spray onto a black t-shirt or would the black show through?

Sorry to hear that. It's worked perfect for me every time. The fabric must be absorbant and can be checked by seeing if water soaks into the fabric.

It could have been due to the fabric being treated with a waterproofer or stain resistant treatment.
