Well, Hermione wanted her parents to be safe, so she obliviated their memories of her in case a death eater or something came looking for her, and they would be safe or something like that. Look in the newspaper at the start of the movie, it says muggle family murdered, she didnt want that to happen to her parents... basically.

@cjhrjone54 I thought it was so they wouldn't miss her if she died on her mission. But you may be right, it looks like in the film the spell erases her from their lives - so she may not even have a birth certificate in their house! If that's the case then Death Eaters wouldn't know whether or not they were her parents. But if it is just a memory wipe then my explaination serves - which i think is the sadder one really!

@roeiboot4 Actually it is written in the book the director just made it differently. Because Hermione does wipe the memory of her parents but it's not a permanent spell. Harry does say goodbye to the Dursleys.

Ron is different though. He's suppose to have a weird looking creature in his bed. To me that's the only different part.

I just got around to watching part one yesterday. I replayed the opening scene four or five times. Love the music with it. Love the way Hermione looks, and Ron and I must say that Vernon Dursley played his part well...like we would never see him again. Even though they cut out a little bit that the book had...I think they rearranged it almost to perfection.
