A girl asked me for a ride home from work one day. Tool being in my cd player, came on as soon as I started my car. She asked if we could listen to something else. I asked if she liked to walk. True story.
@BASSxACE I started dating a girl who didn't really like TOOL, but seeing as that is all I played in my car for the first few months, she started listening to them. Now she likes them and is my fiance. True story.
@browneye870 yeah and then Maynard picked her up on the side of the road, drove up beside you, laughed and pointed at the stinky unwashed tool fan you are... then took gf home and banged her.
the undertow album is for sure the greatest album ever created, but theres no doubt tool is seperated from all other music or art you could find, it leaves somthing behind after the song is over , some energy that you conjure up and release that actually goes out and affects the world around you
This is one of the reasons why I love Tools music and the band so much, they're just so well put together and all about the overall sound. I also love how their individual sounds come together like a perfectly cooked recipe to flow through your ears and make you think and feel. Along with Pink Floyd, they are amongst my favorite bands I can listen to without feeling the need to do anything else while doing so. Their song "Reflection" never fails to lift me up when I am down, its all I need.

Sure he may not be the best technical guitarists and he isn't crazy on theory like tom morello, however, one would be hard pressed to find a better rhythm guitarist than adam jones in the world. keeping time while playing the stuff that they all do is quite impressive. it is difficult enough to play along to their stuff let alone playing it without a backup track and writing this material. Much respect

I play guitar and animate so he really is someone I try to emulate as far as work ethic. Pure precision and hard work.
adam jones is an amazing guitarist. him and the rest of tool can go through several time signatures in one song and no one would notice because they can transition between them and still make a great piece of music. i just got done reading some of the comments and all of them are about how good adem jones is. i agree and dont see how anyone can say otherwise.

I respect your opinion, but I must say that that is not true. At the extreme beginning of 46 and 2 there is no intensity. I didn't say anything about the structure of the songs other than those two seperate and distinct.
Adams creativity is endless. I personally like the subtle guitar parts under Justin's bass playing. He has a great feel of when to let the song breath or to add layers or a wall of noise. No,he's not as technically gifted as Hendrix, but who is. You can't judge a medium like music by if he's as good as this guy or that guy,it's what is contributed to a song,a feeling to a song or how that part of the music makes u feel.
Mr.Adam Jones deserves so much respect for his input to the music industry . As a guitarist i respect him hugely for his creativity and his art work .
@metalgeartiernan i agree, most people think that adam doesn't do anything when it comes to tool, like it's just justin and danny, but without adam we wouldn't have jambi, rosetta stoned, a whole bunch of other stuff, and he gave reflection it's mood with the synthesizer and solos and what not
@metalgeartiernan For sure, if these guys don't end up in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame within the next 25 years I'm going to lose a lot of respect for that community.
It frustrates me how SO MANY PEOPLE claim prison sex is about Maynard being abused. Read between the lines of that song.
"This song is about recognizing, identifying, pychological abuse inside yourself, thats the first step of the process, realization, identifying. The next step is to work through it, but this is about the first step, which is recognizing" Quote from Maynard himself regarding the meaning to Prison sex
Well it's actually about that: " I do unto others what has been done to me..." it 's in the song . And that is also why he appears on the video with Tori Amos at the Rape, Abuse and Incest.... concert.
Are you serious? "I do unto others what has been done to me"
That's the only way you can interpret that lyric? As a child being raped? Read my comment. It's an exact quote of what MJK said the song is about.
That lyric could mean so many things other than child abuse; it's completely open to interpretation at the listener's discretion. It could mean to burn down some guy's house killing his family, cause he burnt down your house?
There's still no evidence to suggest MJK was abused as a kid.
i literally saw an interview where mjk said that it is about the endless cycle of sexual abuse i haven't seen any interview where he said that but yea you should interupt as you want i agree with that but that's what mjk has said
wow really ? so cool .how was he in person He's one of the guitarists i really admire along with Muhammad Suicmez , Nick Drake ,zappa and i know I'm going to get negs for this but Kurt Cobain.
yeah he was reallly cool in person. i kindve interupted a convo he was having with his security guard to tell him i enjoyed the show tonite and he said thank you im glad you liked it, then i asked if he had a pen or marker to sign my unsigned poster i bought for 25 bucks mean while they were selling signed ones for 100, but i eventually just asked him if he wouldnt mind taking a picture with me and a few of my freinds although 2 fags ruined the pic its awsome go to myspace / 73905426 to c pics

all he does is play bar chords in d and follow Maynard's lyrics with single note bull shit....... prove me wrong, show me a solo from him anywhere on youtube
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ive been playing for 11 years and am still a pretty big tool fan but i just think every one tries to give adam jones credit he doesnt deserve, i have a pretty long list of people like that to
Ok, so have you ever actually tried to play a Tool song? Its certainly not just 'bar cords in d'. The kind of comment someone who hasn't been playing for 11 years would make.
I also don't think Adam Jones gets credit he doesn't deserve, its not as if he is hailed as the greatest guitarist of all time.
Also if the songs are as easy as playing in just drop d, why arn't you making music like they are?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
o ok please name me one song that isnt in drop d and mainly bar chords. Im sorry if your a metal head and think the only way to play the guitar is in that particular tuning but its cheating........ yes cheating. It takes no skill to bar with one finger all the way across the fretboard whether you think it is or not
@tripps5415 - I apologize. I was under the impression that it was about making good music. I didn't know it was a competition to see how many chords and scales you can use. Sorry bud!
What do you think he doesn't deserve? He's not the best technical guitar player of all time. Not even close. He get's credit for having a playing style that puts the sound of the entire band first, and at the same time having the ear to create one of the most magnificantly intricate guitar tones of all time. Couple that with the fact that he creates pretty much all the video's that they put out, and personally I believe he is one of the most underrated musicians out there.
I support Tripps here actually. Adam Jones isn't some guitar god. He's standard at best. There are riffs that he performs in more than one song, for example "Lost Keys" and "46&2" have the same basic riff with an octave difference. He does well for himself, but he's not in the same caliber as Jimi Hendrix. However, he does play a mean riff.
@ToolKid21 Listen to the songs right after each other. The Lost Keys riff has the same intervals as the beginning of 46&2's guitar part. Lateralus even has a snippet of the same riff as well.
I agree, I love dream theater and steve vai and all the great fast players...but I love how adam is such a strong song writer, and he's a band man...he's focused on the sound as a whole...not trying to show every guitar noob in the world that he practices scales
I think the majority of Adam Jones' respect comes from the fact that he's not just your generic contemporary musician. One word that describes him perfectly is 'Artist'. He just has this really rare ability of creativity, where he can create musical art, conceptual art and visual art in absolute synchronization with each-other.
All the solos are those noisy long notes he plays like for instance in Rosetta stone or the very simple one in Lateralus...
they're not Frank Zappa's solos or any technical guitar player you might listen to. And I personally wouldn't call all the single notes he plays bullshit cause you could just create a masterpiece with only nuances of single notes, then chords on 2or3 strings and bar chords. But maybe you're just not into Tool. They have NEVER been about technique.
Exactly, for a peice of music to sound good, it doesn't HAVE to be technically difficult. Adam Jones has a very unique sound and style, certainly one I don't think is in anyway easy to replicate.
Plus for whoever said he was shit, lol type in Adam Jones solo and you will see some of his solos, my fave in particular is his tlak box one in Jambi, insane stuff!
Playing over-the-top solos does not define a guitar player's skill. Jones has said he doesn't really like conventional solos, cause they are so overused. He does some whole note solos with flanger effect and what not; and that's what sounds good with Tool.
Well can any evidence be found on this ?I hardly believe so. but this is surely one of my interpretations since ONE of the subject matters in Prison sex is rape (and back to the line I quoted) . Now Maynard is very skilled at guiding the audience in any direction he likes and away from what is too sensitive. Also in the quote you sent he's just being elusive, not directly denying. Please believe I'm not trying to convince anyone here, just telling my opinion. Which is no joke.
NIN, Tool, APC, Porcupine Tree,
you can't go wrong!I discovered each of these bands on my own by accident over time. its like fate.

ive been playing for 11 years and am still a pretty big tool fan but i just think every one tries to give adam jones credit he doesnt deserve, i have a pretty long list of people like that to
tripps5415 2 years ago
Ok, so have you ever actually tried to play a Tool song? Its certainly not just 'bar cords in d'. The kind of comment someone who hasn't been playing for 11 years would make.
I also don't think Adam Jones gets credit he doesn't deserve, its not as if he is hailed as the greatest guitarist of all time.
Also if the songs are as easy as playing in just drop d, why arn't you making music like they are?

o ok please name me one song that isnt in drop d and mainly bar chords. Im sorry if your a metal head and think the only way to play the guitar is in that particular tuning but its cheating........ yes cheating. It takes no skill to bar with one finger all the way across the fretboard whether you think it is or not
tripps5415 2 years ago
@tripps5415 - I apologize. I was under the impression that it was about making good music. I didn't know it was a competition to see how many chords and scales you can use. Sorry bud!

@tripps5415 one of the least intelligent comments ive ever read. Go learn a tool song from one of the last two albums.

(3) - Adam Jones
(2) - Jimi Hendrix
(1) - Jimmy Page
Just my opinion!

SyShayd 2 years ago
@SyShayd how is it the same riff?
ToolKid21 1 year ago
@ToolKid21 Listen to the songs right after each other. The Lost Keys riff has the same intervals as the beginning of 46&2's guitar part. Lateralus even has a snippet of the same riff as well.

@SyShayd What part are you referring to? I know how to play both those songs and the riffs are totally different.

I agree, I love dream theater and steve vai and all the great fast players...but I love how adam is such a strong song writer, and he's a band man...he's focused on the sound as a whole...not trying to show every guitar noob in the world that he practices scales

damn straight dude. hes a genius

I think the majority of Adam Jones' respect comes from the fact that he's not just your generic contemporary musician. One word that describes him perfectly is 'Artist'. He just has this really rare ability of creativity, where he can create musical art, conceptual art and visual art in absolute synchronization with each-other.
MaskoftheWraith 1 year ago
@opiateofthemasses he's actually classically trained and very technically knowlegdeable. he just chooses to play more tonically.

They have NEVER been about technique.
bmarrero 2 years ago
Exactly, for a peice of music to sound good, it doesn't HAVE to be technically difficult. Adam Jones has a very unique sound and style, certainly one I don't think is in anyway easy to replicate.
Plus for whoever said he was shit, lol type in Adam Jones solo and you will see some of his solos, my fave in particular is his tlak box one in Jambi, insane stuff!
22198822 2 years ago

Which is no joke.

um lol well let me hear you play like him and have his creativity...
