I'm British but I'd suggest that theres plenty of other pilots Worldwide who would have pulled this off. The American who managed to crash land that flight into the River Hudson saving all on board being just one example.
this i s your captain speaking so easy slowdown nose up when it touches the sea bring the rubber slides down use it as floats then the passengers are safe oh wait i almost forgot use your lifevests .
I have watched enough of these ACI shows to know one thing. If I am on a commercial plane with mechanical problems, I hope it is a British one. At least 3 different crews have done some great stuff and landed their plane with no loss of life.
@CCRider01 What about TACA 110 in 1988. They put the 737 on a field in thunderstorms without scratching the airplane. Airplane is still flying.
Or The Gimly Glider, or the Transat that glided onto The Azores Island.
None of them were Brits. They were Spanish and French, yes French the last two. So was the Baghdad DHL in 2003, landed without flight controls after been hit by a SAM.
@CFITOMAHAWK - Obviously many other countries have very good pilots, and not ONLY Brits have shown amazing pilot skills when needed, it would be silly to suggest otherwise. I was just stating that if on a plane with mechanical problems, a British crew would still be my first preference JMO of course. They are well trained, work as a team, and the Brits (in general not always of course) seem to have a different way of dealing with crisis.
"Ladies and Gentlemen we have a small problem all 4 engines have stopped. The clicking noise you hear is the sound of your fellow passengers knees rattling"
@Rico8458 It's more than just a theory. Assuming there is a suitable landing area within reach....very good possibility given the gliding distance from 39,000 feet.....the landing should not be very different from any "normal" landing. Keep in mind that during every touch down the plane is essentially gliding in. Of course with no engines there is no go-around option but, other than that, if the approach is set up correctly, the physics are the same.
God I am coming to you''we have a small problem4 engines stopped''!!! but I do agree to certain extend..as Engines is not the biggest problem for plane,,what passenger and pilot should rearlly be scared of is the failure of hudraulic system , a whole in wing or somthing to do with wings
I remember a company check flight I did once in a 10 seat twin when I was doing a relief tour of duty for a former employer. The check and training pilot with me simulated a double engine failure which was something I'd never been asked to deal with before. It's surprising just how long it takes to formulate a new response to a new situation as opposed to the reponses we've been trained to make. Feels like wading through mud for a while and these guys would have felt just the same. Ups to them.
@SuperMole666 that aint no small problem you know damn well if that was you up there with a plane full of people you would be scared and your on the line of saving these people so that aint a small problem thats the worst that can possibly happen if they had at least 2 engines running they could had made it and not worry about starting the other 2 but they did and they survived
@SuperMole666 ya but we all know the captain just refused to make a big deal cause he already knew the passengers are so scared. Flight attendants or pilots always do it by the public adress but everything is clear anyway.
they maybe forget about pre trip inspection, so when you operate a comercial vehicle or aircraft you have to inspect parts including Stearing Leafe suspension Condition of the front axle, condition of steering system, no loose worn bent damaged or missing parts, and must grab steering mechanism to test for looseness. check that low beams are on, both front and rear four way flashers are working, check that high beams work, four way emergency flasher,
the flight was to perth austarlia there weather radar was giving false info and they gone into lightning clouds elctro charged clouds and scratches the plane and made the engines catch on fire and make them stop
Met is the most boring subject in a pilots syllabus. It makes you go to sleep, our examiner left the anwser on roll down white board and stated. "I am expecting LONG phone call during this exam, the anwser is on the other side of the board, please do not look at it as I will be at least 1 Hour ON THE PHONE"... It was our 3rd resit.
they do say its a small problem because they have to try to make the passengers feel as comfortable as possible, no matter what the circumstances are!
On December 15, 1989 KLM Flight 867 from Amsterdam was descending into Anchorage International Airport when the Boeing 747-400 flew though a thick cloud of volcanic ash from Mount Redoubt. All four engines failed leaving only critical systems on backup electrical power. After descending more than 14,000 feet, Captain Karl van der Elst and crew were finally able to restart the engines and safely land the plane. In this case the ash caused more than $80 million in damage to the plane.
in this case IT WAS that the plane flew INN a vulcanic ash cloud, so all the engines ran out of AIR to burn the kerosene! thats why they stard back again on a lower ALT., under the ashes and in plain air, about 10ooo ft
If I were on a 747 and the guy atr the top says, "sorry folks, all 4 engines have failed, trust you are not in too much distress," I`d have died immediately - Ha !
I think one of the most remarkable plane crash stories ever! another one being the blow out one when the pilot got pinned to the front of the BA plane!
"ladies & gentlemen...we have a small problem.....ALL engines have stopped....I trust you're not in too much distress..." ffs....i'm still a virgin!!!!
all I kept thinking to my self as the plane plummeted toward the ground was, "dont worry be happy...everything is gonna be alright"..."dont worry...about a thing...if where gonna die where gonna die together" :|
That's an interesting piece of history. I'd not come across the origins of it. Mayday is the standard international distress call for aircraft in the same way SOS is for ships. When you're at cruising altitude, flying straight and level, it's not necessary to wear seat belts. The only time it's necessary is during climb and descent.
There IS always one pilot flying the plane at all times. In fact, when one officer or the other goes to take a break, both officers must iterate to each other verbally who has control of the plane (i.e. "You have the plane", "I have the plane.").
it is a simulation in airplane inspections go to a nearest airport and fine a movie in which they simulate air craft investigations its fun i been in one but not in real life its fun you should try it!
all engines off or failed is what is referred to as "dead stick" and all sailplanes and gliders are ALWAYS dead stick, but in a jet airplane it is a extreme problem because jets are have a much higher wing loading

When flying through volcanic ash the ash sucked into the engines melts in the combustion chamber and plates out onto any surface available. It pretty quickly ruins the compressor efficiency. its called st elmo's fire. i remember watching this episode. the dust from the volcano's eruption brushes against the boeing, causing the sparks. volcano eruptions do not appear on radar, which is why the pilots didn't have a clue what was going on.

"Ladies & Gentlemen, we have a small problem - all four engines have stopped..... I trust you're not too distressed....." EXCUSE ME??? IF EVER I HEARD THAT ON BOARD A PLANE I'D BE CRAPPING MYSELF!!!!!
Try to view the last part of this episode, where it shows the plane in bare metal with most paint stripped off by the sandblasting effect. Three of the engines were removed in Jakarta and sent by cargo plane to RR factory in UK for strip down inspection. See the solidified ash (was molten) clogging up the turbine and compressor blades. Its a miracle to restart the engines!
The turbines are designed to suck in huge amounts of air, inside air is pressurized and added with fuel, etc. and thus making engines hot, the smoke ash are really volcanic rocks tiny bits of them, when in reached the internal engine it turned into a slimy molten goo and starts to choke the engines, a tail fire is caused when the engine burns with less oxygen
First of all....NEVER F@#K'N SAY ALL FOUR ENGINES HAVE STOPPED!!! I like the truth but dam, have some tack!! lol Please take your seats. Fasten your seatbelts maybe? lol
And now the best: Total Lives Killed by Boeing. Boeing 707: 2733 killed. Boeing 717: OK. Boeing 720: 175 killed. Boeing 727: 3702 killed. Boeing 737: 4779 killed. Updated Boeing 747: 2850 killed. Boeing 757: 467 killed. Boeing 767: 569 killed. Boeing 777: OK. Total Killed= 15.215 Updated. Americans like everything huge...WOW.
The incident was British Airways Flight 9 in which the aircraft flew into a volcanic ash cloud thrown up by the eruption of Mount Galunggung, in Indonesia. The plane was able to land safely, with no casulaties.
I'm British but I'd suggest that theres plenty of other pilots Worldwide who would have pulled this off. The American who managed to crash land that flight into the River Hudson saving all on board being just one example.

Ladies and gentlemen we have a "SMALL" problem all four engines have failed, that what I call keeping your cool a very British response.

Its a miracle to restart the engines!
windomes300 4 years ago
The turbines are designed to suck in huge amounts of air, inside air is pressurized and added with fuel, etc. and thus making engines hot, the smoke ash are really volcanic rocks tiny bits of them, when in reached the internal engine it turned into a slimy molten goo and starts to choke the engines, a tail fire is caused when the engine burns with less oxygen

They did a good job boy! You must feel on top of the world when you land a plane after all that!
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a small problem..."
Not as bad as "Ladies and Gentlemen, today isn't our day." can't remember what crash that was from, but I know it crashed into a forest. I think.

Understatement of the decade!
A 747 can glide just 15Km for every 1000m it loses in height. At the time, this was the longest glide in history.

02:40 "ladies and gentlemen.. we have a small problem"
Don't think so because if a 747 lands on water all 4 engines act like a scoop which can cause the plane to break up more easily

The incident was British Airways Flight 9 in which the aircraft flew into a volcanic ash cloud thrown up by the eruption of Mount Galunggung, in Indonesia. The plane was able to land safely, with no casulaties.
