Making holes, cutting, implanting yourself is harmful because you can get an infection, huge scars (unwanted ones), tissue damage, etc...

I am sure there is a small percentage that suffers from mental illness, but most do not. I am mentally stable, and I'm more physically healthy than most.

@Joeofiowa I get your point but that's a whole different level, a little thing on your ears is tremendously different than scarification with surgery scalpels or putting spheres up your head or getting some puma face.
In most cases it is not reversible, ears pierced is a strong part of our culture and it's harmless in the wide majority of cases, but scarifying yourself with scalpels? That's not.

2) So reversability is the key to propriety? A strange criterion.
3) Yes, ear piercing is a "strong part of our culture." But scarification and more "intense" piercing is a strong part of some other cultures. Do you mean to imply those cultures are wrong and ours is right?
Not trying to be combative. But I don't see any absolute moral framework here.

1) Well, for my criteria, when the >overall< health isn't put to threat, then it's harmless.
Making holes, cutting, implanting yourself is harmful because you can get an infection, huge scars (unwanted ones), tissue damage, etc...

@Joeofiowa 2) Nope, I said it's harmless in the wide majority of cases, not in all cases, and the difference is simple and imaginable: A little 1mm hole in the ears exposes you to infections and scars much less than a huge scalpel scarification or a implant in the head for example.
3) I never implied they are wrong, but unhealthy, wrong and right is based on moral and ethics and they vary.

@carlosewm To be honest, you seem incredibly uneducated in body modification. I would suggest either doing some research on the subject, or just avoid discussing it entirely. There are so many reasons and motives for the art of body modification, and it is a simple FACT that you cannot make a statement on behalf of that entire group. I am sure there is a small percentage that suffers from mental illness, but most do not. I am mentally stable, and I'm more physically healthy than most.

@RoofieOnTheRocks You are right, I shouldn't speak like the entire group suffers from mental illness, that was a probably product of my astonishment as I cannot understand why someone can want to modify himself that much, and I suspect that is a form of self-punishment and that's why I made that claim.
Next time, i'll make sure to put "I believe" before my claims, so it makes clear that I don't have statistical evidence to proof such claims and that they are solely based on subjectivity.

It's perfectly fine not to understand something. I get the impression that you don't even want to understand it, but in case I'm wrong, I suggest Googling it. Myself? I get so much joy out of it. I don't see it as punishment at all. Everything I do is very safe, relatively painless, and makes me feel beautiful. It's a very positive thing for me. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it makes me happy.

This seems to be a very common and popular type of jewellery these days, everything from pierced ears, tongues, eyebrows, and belly buttons, and Lord knows what else. True they are a persons own choice but what are we truly giving into here? Puncturing our body our holy temple for the sake of vanity? Are we truly all not beautiful the way Christ created us, of course we are.
