I still say Hopkins beat jones.Hopkins was a force in his first 20 fights. His last 20 fights are nowhere close to what he was in his first 20 fights. Hopkins was a machine, No holding, just punch after punch. Nobody knows who's going to win until the fights over. calzaghe had bad broken hands and couldn't deliver full power. If he had good hands his whole career he would have been more dangerous than he was. And that's dangerous.

But his English fanboys want you to believe a lot more than there is to believe. He ducked Jones and Hopkins as a young man by staying in England and came to the fore only in their decline. He then promptly retired when a new crop of strong young fighters appeared. Calzaghe: good, not great. Not even close.

The problem is though Joe and his management wanted to figh the likes of Jermain taylor and andre ward but he was ignored and offered very poor purse splits. Joe was ignored for a very long time during his professional career and should of got the big fights well early in his career. I am glad he got eventually got the recognition he deserves and even if he fought the big names earlier he would still remain unbeaten.

@bunzen09 You know what, you should consider a few things. One, as you get older, your skills (especially in a sport like this) diminish quite rapidly. Secondly, a fighter like Roy Jones, who was so good because of his speed, would be a tremendous disadvantage when he got older (compared to his formerself) compared with a guy who has something else in his advantage (like fighting smart, etc, things like that may not fade as quickly as you age). You clearly don't get it.

I still say Hopkins beat jones.Hopkins was a force in his first 20 fights. His last 20 fights are nowhere close to what he was in his first 20 fights. Hopkins was a machine, No holding, just punch after punch. Nobody knows who's going to win until the fights over. calzaghe had bad broken hands and couldn't deliver full power. If he had good hands his whole career he would have been more dangerous than he was. And that's dangerous.

Calzaghe was a superbly conditioned technician. Excellent, though not brilliant, speed, and very little punching power. He was good, not great, not close to greatness. But his English fanboys want you to believe a lot more than there is to believe. He ducked Jones and Hopkins as a young man by staying in England and came to the fore only in their decline. He then promptly retired when a new crop of strong young fighters appeared. Calzaghe: good, not great. Not even close.

The problem is though Joe and his management wanted to figh the likes of Jermain taylor and andre ward but he was ignored and offered very poor purse splits. Joe was ignored for a very long time during his professional career and should of got the big fights well early in his career. I am glad he got eventually got the recognition he deserves and even if he fought the big names earlier he would still remain unbeaten.

Forget Hopkins and Jones in thier prime (who i think would have soundly beaten JC) what about Glenn Johnson, Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright, Jermain Taylor and many other fighters of that level who where in thier prime a decade or so ago?.
This is why JC will never be a true great he never fought any world level fighters truly of note in thier true prime he would certainly have beaten a few and lost a few but it would have cemented a true great of the sport rather then a dodger.

he's damn good, even a great fighter, but not a legend. he pretty much refused to leave his home country to fight, they had to expedite him to get him to fight in america. he refused to fight RJ until he had moved up then down thru a few weights, lost 3 fights and been KO'd. he didnt fight hopkins till he was 43 and CLEARLY LOST THAT FIGHT. he almost got beat by robin reid, a journeyman. only big wins are eubank, kessler and lacy, none of which will go down in boxing history as anything special.

Calzagne was a bum. Like most recent british fighters he fought nobodies and han an inflated record. Everyone fights losers in their career but when you reach a certain level you should step up your quality of opposition. Calzagne never did that. Secondly, a fighter like Roy Jones, who was so good because of his speed, would be a tremendous disadvantage when he got older (compared to his formerself) compared with a guy who has something else in his advantage (like fighting smart, etc, things like that may not fade as quickly as you age). You clearly don't get it.

even if i dislike white people, I admit that Joe Calzaghe is probably the best British boxer of all time. no men have won over twenty World title fights, become Undisputed Champion AND won world titles in two weight divisions. to beat Hopkins long before he dismantled Pavlik really impressed me too. Altho hatton has won four world belts in 2 weight divisons

Calzaghe is an all time great. But sadly, he didn't fight anybody that would immortalize his career. And he never gave a rematch to the fighters who came very close to beating him.

@philcoool Nothing wrong with retiring on top. Just fight the best before you do. Don't avoid other good/great competition, and act like you're the best. Don't avoid a rematch with Hopkins, and fight a shot Roy Jones jr.

Everybody wants to cry because Marciano and Calzaghe didnt fight past their prime and into defeats. Marciano was really a cruiserweight knocking out heavyweights and Calzaghe fought everybody they threw at him its not his fault noone wanted to fight him before he turned 35
