i love spike, but who is his work on the ads actually ? i mean, the ads are made by advertisers, spike just film them so why does he gets so much credit for them, or am i wrong ?
As the patient mumbles a tune trying to communicate through his trauma, the elder DR remembers it first from Gloria Jones earlier version, perhaps whilst studying in Med School. Staff remembers contemporary Soft Cell Version, singing it all together, wayyyyy coooool!!!!
The guy playing Richard is Marc Worden. He was on The All New Mickey Mouse Club in the early 90s. (Yes, the same one Britney and those guys were on.) Marc has recently been doing voiceover such as the voice of Iron Man/Tony Stark in the cartoon version of The Invincible Iron Man.
@misantrooper : Spike Jonze specializes in a type of advertising where he is called a Concept Director, meaning many things, including the fact that he creates the concepts he directs and that the ad is concept oriented. The slogan is Wide Open meaning that the world of Levi's is Wide Open to anything . . . so if you get pulled into the emergency room while wearing Levi's jeans expect Wide Open possibilities, like the entire room breaking into song. Hope that helps. :D

@misantrooper yes I can explain it. most people don't watch commercials or care about them so spike plays into that. he creates a comfortable tone from an upsetting situation. the contrast to that is the sudden flatline sound, changing the mood and drawing the attention back just as the crucial full frame shot of the jeans rolls. you only need to see the shot once because this is the memorable moment that contrasts the rest of the film.
The first time I saw this commercial it caught me totally of guard. It was so excellent. At the risk of sounding corny, I tell you it lifted my spirits. Further, although I never saw it again, I have never forgotten it.
Perhaps .. maybe .. it's 'wide open' to ... interpretation? no idea

I've always wondered why I associate a stretcher with this song. So I Googled this: "Tainted Love" + "Commercial" . . . and found the video. Heh.

Likewise, I think the idea is just to show something cool/funny and than display the logo so that people associate :)

Probably the biggest commercials purpose is to write down their brand in ones consciousness. Rest simply doesn't matter much
