I was there, and it was awesome. I was able to watch it with my Grandchildren. I think it is a shame to end the program. Now we have to rely on Russia to take up anything to the space station for us. Yeah, expensive program, and alot of money needed in the USA on earth, however we will still fund other Nations for food, and medical, instead of our own... Bring back the Shuttles !!!

Seeing the Atlantis go off into space was amazing. Its like a once in a lifetime opportunity to see it. After that was over off to Cocoa Beach my mom bf n nephew went. It was fun!

@BlackMellivore this is the last shuttle that NASA is launching a shuttle to space. President Kennedy only did NASA space program for 30 years. It was amazing to go see it in person. It is now done until another President wants to bring the space program back.

I believe that space travel will continue. The only reason why they're retiring the shuttles is because The International space station has been completed; also they're very expensive to launch. The technology to go back to the moon is there, but NASA isn't getting the funding that it should from the Government. They actually get 1% of the total budget. About 3 billion dollars. That's not nearly enough to develop a manned craft like the Saturn V.

NASA is building a space craft to take astronauts into deep space. The shuttles are retiring because they do not have the best ability to take astronauts on long, far missions. NASA actually posted a youtube video explaining it all a few hours ago. NASA will be sending people into space, just not for quite a while. People on the live stream of the launch coverage last night said it is like a long hold. To get to the ISS, Americans will go up with other countries like they already do.

It's not the last launch. NASA is not shutting down. The Space Shuttle project is ending. That's it. It's a good thing. The project has had a great run for I think 20 to 25 years. But, now it's time to focus on going back to the Moon. Trying to build Moon Bases. And also focusing on the first manned mission to Mars. The future for american space travel is bright. Personally I can't wait for whats ahead for the future of NASA. I'm a huge space nerd. :)

@rjbrozov NASA isn't shutting down. They are just finishing the Space Shuttle program. But, we should be happy. We're now going to focus on life in space. For example, NASA plans to have Moon bases where Astronauts can study the Moon and live. Also, by 2030 NASA plans to have landed men on Mars. The future is bright for american space travel is bright like I said in another comment. :)

My science teacher said that only the space shuttle project was shutting down, however, if NASA has the money, they might come out with a new capsule project like the Russians because they can't keep on reusing the shuttles that are like 30 years old which is why it is shutting down.I guess we just have to wait and see what happens.......but nothing will be happening soon with all the economy problems.

NASA's not shutting down... But I'll quote a Physicist Dr. Michio Kaku,

"The Government spends money on Projects to nowhere, with no possible return, instead they should be investing in scientific innovation as it's return is usually 10 fold."

But the shuttle needed to be retired, the only bad thing is they cut the replacement... in 10 years they went through Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. The Shuttle, wasn't updated in 30 years. So it's good that it's been retired, bad there's no replacement..
