@12Metaman It's musical style, not opera. He studied musical-theatre at Balettakademien in Gothenburg (source: his facebook page, wikipedia) and performed in West Side Story, Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar.

For comparison, Powerwolf have a former opera singer.

Anyway absolutely agreed, he is great! He fits Falconer's style perfectly, I think precisely because he's not a typical rock/metal singer.

Falconer is awesome. Matthias (the singer) was originally trained in musical theater. It just goes to show you metal kids out there - before you beat up on the little theater sissies in highschool, make sure one isn't a good metal singer!

There are many metal singers who were trained in classical/opera singing. Roy Khan from Kamelot and Warrel Dane from Nevermore currently come to mind, but there's more.

Although which the album Ghost Opera, you cant really tell Khans had much training, his singing sounds strained. But its really obvious on The Black Halo, his vocal performance on that entire album was incredible.

I think they're confusing Falconer with Mithotyn. Mithotyn was black metal with viking and mythic themes. The guitarist, Stefan Weinerhall was in Mithotyn, and wanted to form a power metal band espousing the same mythical themes. No reason to mark the comment down over some confusion. You know what I just realized? You can barely tell he's not a native English-speaker. When you hear, for example, Tarja sing live, her accent is very discernable. Blad's just got so much vocal control, even when sick, that he even kept his accent in check.

In case anyone hasn't tried to sing professionally that way, that's REALLY hard to do in one take.

I fully agree with you. When I first time heard him, I thought their band must be an English-speaking one and I was quite taken aback to find out they are from Sweden. And it's quite enjoying to listen to them because both vocalist and their songs have such medieval overtones which is something I really love.

Albums "Falconer" and "Chapters from a Vale Forlorn" was with mathias blad,"the sceptre of deception" and "grime vs grandeur" were with Kristoffer Göbel (?) and "Northwind" and now "among beggars and thieves" are again with Mathias Blad, the one in the Video is Mathias too ;)

Anyway, i had one complaint. The singer seemed to have lost his voice... During the "Clarion call" he asked the fans to help him out, and it worked. Nice concert, nice festival, hope to see them again in 2009.
