What's funny is that for the first 3-4 pictures of the band, they come to look progressively uglier with each picture. Father time hit these guys with a nuclear bomb! Still a good band, it's just like.... what happened?? Geoff looks awful without hair! oh well...
this isn't real metal. its not a real folk cover. its just really bad. if you wanna hear real metal listen to sabbath, led zep, maiden, priest, metallica, motor head, megadeth (who i just saw!), slayer, anthrax (who I'm gonna see in a few days), morbid angel, death, venom, mayhem, at the gates, carcass, exodus, krater,,,,ANYTHING BUT THIS!!!! ruins a magical song,,,in the way when judas priest covered johnny b. goode (love priest but they can't play chuck)
@peacesellsstevebuyin I love the last part of your post...some songs should not be covered because it ruins the magic of the original. But that does not take away from their music moreoever adding to their accomplishments of something different.
@IrishCelticPrincess It's the magical Geoff Tate with his old band Myth, check Queensrÿches acoustic version if you dont like the heavy music, it takes some getting used to :)
Hey edgar I believe its Geoff on vocals and his band when he did a solo project. Dont know the name of the album. He nailed it though. Both versions are kick ass. Goes to show his vocal range. Trully of the top five vocalist in my opinion, Another one is Rob Halford. Just my opinion.
Tates' vocals and DeGarmos' understanding of symphonic orchestral music stand alone. Operation Mindcrime was the first operatic metal. Tate sings with such passion and emotion. Nothing Pink Floyd, Rush or Dream Theater did can compare to Rage For Order or Operation Mindcrime!
@stratman123 well, i like the more classical approach. Simon and Garfunkel isnt exactly classical, but its my favorite. :) I also love Hayley Westenra's rendition of it from Celtic Women.
@abravar2 Their versions are both beautiful in the classical version, and I do like that style of rendition better, but this is still very interesting for it's sheer difference.
@stp52x, In the older pictures they are all original. In the newer pics there is Mike Stone who replaced QR's other guitarest Chris DeGarmo for a bit. QR's newest guitarest is Parker Lundgren. Props to Michael (Whip) Wilton for his kick ass guitar skills always. RYCHE ON!
Unbelieveable did we or u or us like this crap. Scarborough Fair done as a hair metal version. It's embarrassing! I mean I'm embarrassed for them, this rips the guts out of something beautiful and makes it unbeautiful...terrament no disrespect, but delete this and just post sweet lucidity.
@jarheadts I'm a guy, you want me to perform a homosexual act on you.......sorry but I'm straight, well I have no problem with gay people but did you really want to come out of the closet on youtube? Queensryche's version of this song to me, ok to me is not very pleasant. By the way it's time to grow up!
this is so different from the version they recorded during the empire session - awesome (still i prefer the other version) and thanks for uploading it
@randomspawner The screamo "metal" you have uploaded isnt metal, its the equivalent of dogshit. Screamo and nu metal are responsible for killing true heavy metal so shut the fuck up.
This cover is one of the few that out does the original. I think this is awesome!! This brings out more emotion than the original. Not only with Geoff Tate's vocals, but it would make a great instrumental as well.
If ever there was a song Queensryche should have covered, it was "One" by Three Dog Night. It practically begged for Tate's soaring leads and the dramatic background vocals.
Oh. They're good! I didn't think before that this song would work on metal. But they did a decent job...I guess it really just depends on the musicians. :)
Oh man, are you guys kidding me?! What are you, deaf? Queensryche's acoustic version is TERRIBLE! Out of tune, off key, terrible. This one is light years ahead of that unplugged one.
It's true that Simon and Garfunkel have a unique version of this medieval folk tune (their counterpoint, "Canticle," adds something indelible), but Queensryche are doing a creditable job of metaling it up, don't you think? I mean the soft original doesn't suffer too badly for the ramped-up sound they've given it, to my mind. And I WILL check out the more acoustic version of it, as RobertM suggests-- no point in rushing to conclusions.
Well this is a treat...First time i heard this particular version of this track!I 've got the
2 other versions, one being from the unplugged show. And the other is from a 2 song disc import they had out from the empire recordings...This recording sounds like they did it during the rage 4 order days sweet!
They seem to have about 4 different versions of it. To think an old Folk Song has lasted this long through the ages and sounds great in their multiple renditions and in Simon & Garfunkle's rendition...
I'm a major metal hard rocker but nobody has come even close to topping Simon & Garfunkel on this tune. It's all the harmonies they did that made their version so brilliant. I think with modern recording someone could top Simon & Garfunkel's performance but not their arrangement.
Apparently lots of people have to play this song. The originator was of the midevil times. It wasn't that complicated but for some people they miss the notes that make all the sense. The flute will seperately play the right notes for you.
Hmmmm I love this band but I would have left this tune to Simon & Garfunkle. It's just not a heavy tune so it sounds stressed. This band does great on soft tunes as well so why they decided to rock the hell out of this little folk tune is beyond me. Would have been very cool in his dark low voice with acoustic guitars to carry the original intent of the tune. JMHO
I've got a version on a cassette single that is much better than this version. It's more what you're looking for. Sounds like it might also be on Empire from one of the comments below.
I agree. Tate in his low register and acoustics would have been perfect. I am a true metal head and QR fan but I love the S&G original much better than this. Trashed it, IMO...
Yes, QR is an awesome metal band. However, this folk tune doesn't seem to be working for them imho. At least this version is way off the mark. This is still an amazing band with a very amazing singer. But like I said this tune is best left to the soft vocal style of Simon & Garfunkle. That's just what this tune really is.
Look for one of Queensryche's other versions - they have several. I have a feeling you'll find one to your liking without all the high registers and with more of an acoustic backing (I just listened to such a version a few minutes ago).
Yes, because this is actually by Myth, one of Tate's earlier bands.
The Queensryche version (on Empire) I'd say is a better version musically, he sings up at this range for 2 verses and the other 3 are down the octave, but it is a better, more rounded piece.
Check out Geoff Tate's Myspace page. He's currently got a much more polished version of the song up there. It's in a lower key (his voice is getting older ya know) but the entire presentation is excellent.
you gotta hear the more modern version. Like on the "Sign of the times" greatest hits double disc collection. Or the unplugged version. They are alot better.

Holy Shit, never heard this version, Geoff is fucking amazing, why Am i suprised? just awesome to hear something ive never heard before, liked the other version, but this is out of this world, He sustains that high register throughout the whole song!!
