After dealing with a lot of threading hell it would be nice to imagine that one day we can work in something like haskell, and insert allocation hints for C-like control over efficiency *without* obfuscating the program's meaning

1 - Yes, Haskell is easy. Haskell has no side effect, so you don't have to care about it.

2 - I recommend Haskell than C++.

what kind of shell commander are you using? It looks like midnight commander but has windows context menu. That's pretty slick!

It's just like Windows Explorer. Context menu is active, so you can pop up menu.

he probably did what I did, when I used to do this sort of stuff - fire up an emulator, and copy them pixel by pixel.

Of course this is what he did, unless he wanted to duplicate the work entirely be hand. You've never done graphics on an 8 bit system. It's nothing like doing modern day graphics.
