  • Tomo san, what is the technique? is there a special pick up needed? how do you control your right hand? what gives the "punch" ?

    domo

  • Tomo, I am in awe of your ability. If I ever am stationed in California (I am in the Army) I would love to take one of your classes. Aside from being accepted into the school, what are the prerequisites of your instruction?

  • funky madness! i love it

  • I love this, i jhust have a question, or two, do you need higher strings or sumthing like that?

  • What is the name of the slap guitar booklet?

  • すげえー!

  • Do u wanna be my teacher ?

  • How is that punch sound in triplets?

  • God why is this so AWESOME?!

  • you make it look so imposible.

  • I'm asian too but not funky like you!!!!!

  • I cannot comprehend funk... that technology level is too great... Cant pass the language barrier... ON TOP OF THAT I CANT TELL WHAT YOUR(TOMO) NATIONALITY IS???????

  • @Yigadurf Thank you. I am 100% Japanese.

  • i like your smile? can you show how to play it?

  • THANK YOU!

  • Im just completely baffled right now

  • is it neck pick up are u using while slapping it??? thanks.. ;)

  • @pen1510 Neck pickup is good choice.

  • @TomoFujitaMusic i know its a booklet for your private student but could you just tell us what the rhythm is for the percussive sound?

is it like pull-slap-pull or something else?

  • damn dude! so cool ...I am a friend of Stefan's and have several D'Pergo's too. Do you sell videos which you tell and show the slapping technique?

  • Tomo, you're such an amazing and inspiring guitarist. I wish I could take lessons with you.

  • @1brannon10 Thank you so much for your kind words. Then you should!

    Tomo

  • @TomoFujitaMusic Hey Tomo.. sorry to bother you.. I just can't domain the slap technique, I dont have a stratocaster like you do, I have a flying V Jackson and when I try to slap the strings hit the wood of the body of the guitar. Can you help me with that?

  • @Cocox2 I have a flying V jackson too~

you meant ur strings hit the fret board or the pick ups or the acutally body?

if it's fret board, this is the exactly sound u want when u slap

if it's pick ups, aren't your strings too loose? tighten them up

if it's body, oh....man....it's way too loose

  • So where is the lesson??

Youre great but we need a little explenation

  • @diegoescolochog Sorry for confusiuon. I teach private lessons and I gave this slap guitar booklet to my students. I just wanted to review of that booklet. so they have taught and have all explanation.

    Tomo

  • i was jamming along and then comes 1:20 and im like um what just happened lol

  • Hey Tomo I have your video AYGP, but I don't quite understand the technique you use when you slap the string with your right index finger. Could you explain it for me? Also, I'm looking forward to seeing you at Berklee next week!

  • Amazing! Will you be coming to Berklee this summer?

  • @20shubhS Thanks. Not 5 week, but I will be playing my concert at BPC on

July 28th. Please come! 9pm show.

    Tomo

  • @TomoFujitaMusic Hey, actually I'm here for the 12 week summer semester. Could I get your Berklee email? You can message it to me on my youtube account.

And yes, I'll definitely be there!

  • Awesome :) Totally dug that! Great playing, Tomo!

  • @jcj2169 Thank you!

    Tomo

  • They say usually if you can sing the riff you can probably play it. LOL not quite.

So I'd imagine its like when I learned to whistle with fingers. Air came out for weeks until one day tone creeps in and you find the valve. Once it does its metabolized into your being and you can pull it off at will. Can we get the order of de bum chickita bada? :)

  • I like the slap guitar technique a lot. It's like you are beatboxing with your guitar. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it's damn hard to learn :P Does someone knows any good slap guitar lessons on youtube??

  • can we do the slap on the acoustic guitar??

  • @sadiQium Yes, you can.

    Tomo

  • @TomoFujitaMusic is this the technique that john mayer uses in the end of the bridge of your body is a wonderland?

  • i think....its harder to play on an elctric guitar....'cause of its thinner strings...i've tried to play this on my guitar....hard!!

  • what gauge are your strings? And where can I get your slap booklet?

  • @Diminished5 D'Addario ENP110 (010-045) You can email me about that.

    Thanks.

    Tomo

  • @TomoFujitaMusic is that ENP or EPN?

  • @Diminished5 EPN Pure Nichel.

    Tomo

  • is it harder to do on a bass guitar or an electric....???:D

  • @EdvinHandzic96 What do you think about that?

    Tomo

  • OHHH MANNNN.....INSANEEE....

  • @EdvinHandzic96 Thanks. That's not too hard to do. My Hot Set (cd/dvd with lesson material) comes with this slap guitar booklet.

    Tomo

  • damn nice rhythm

  • Thanks!

    Tomo

  • wow never saw someone slapping like that on a electric guitar - you are so awesome! I want to play like you someday.. please teach me! hehe

  • Study my Accelerate Your Guitar Playing dvd from Hal Leonard. There is slap guitar lessons there and others.

And welcome to get my Hot Set (dvds, lesson material.)

    Thanks,

    Tomo

  • this would make a great hip hop track. :O

  • Great to hear. Thanks!

    Tomo

  • interesting shit never saw no one doin that , great ideia

  • Thanks!

    Tomo

  • Playing Guitar all day and sharing it with others?! You have one of the best jobs in the world Tomo!

  • Thank you! Yes, the best job in the world! Thankful.

    Tomo

  • you're the man, Tomo..... THE MAN!

  • you da man!

    Tomo

  • Hey man I watched some of your video's and you're a real good player.. Very unique style too.. I'm trying to get this slapping down but it's hard ;)..

  • Thank you so much! Fun stuff.

    Tomo

  • Nice but this is not a lesson.

  • I added some info. Thanks!

    Tomo

  • Hey tomo, you really had great stuff to learn up there!!!

  • Tomo you really inspire me. Thank you so much.

  • Thank YOU so much!

    Tomo

  • This guy is a genious.

  • I really have no idea how you do this with the strings so close together. Do you have any other videos that go further into the technique or could you explain it for me? It looks like you either slap low E with your thumb, pull up on the A string with your index finger, or hit all of the strings with your entire hand but I'm not sure...

  • Thank you. My AYGP dvd from Hal Leonard or my Tone Merchant Clinic dvd. Thank you.

    Tomo

  • i've never seen this on a 6 string before. really cool. i guess other people can but i can not do this just by watching =(

    so cool though!

  • Thanks!

    Tomo

  • I got the first one minute down, but I don't know how you did 1:10~1:25.. is it the same sequence as the first one minute but faster?

  • Triplet one is just faster phrase.. that's all.

    Tomo

  • This is currently my no.1 favourite slap guitar video!!! Thank you so much! This is going to be so much fun...

  • Thank you!

    Tomo

  • Man that's bad ass

  • Thanks!

    Tomo

  • You can't call this a lesson. Guitar "teachers" are really supposed to freak out every time they have to explain something xD

  • Sorry about that. All my students got my funk lesson booklet and I teach each details for each student need... I also taught this in AYGP dvd... Tone Merchant Clinic dvd... this is extra ideas for them. Thank you.

    Tomo

  • i'm sorry. haven't used my brain. i'll take back what i wrote earlier..

i was just looking for some beginner stuff about the technique at youtube. it's quite a nice tempo, so no problem with playing that.

  • No problem at all. I made these to my Berklee students and my correspondence lesson students. Review source. If you can , take real lessons. Guitar playing is fun.. but it's very easy to get bad habits too. Self-taught is very limited and I hate people wasting their time and getting bad habits which limit possibilities on improving.

    Tomo

  • 0:12 is a bit too hard..

Is it plain right hand quickness?

This is too neat not to try and learn it!

  • Yes, you need to hit the strings by your right hand pretty fast. Hit twice and pull once.

    Try it.

    Tomo

  • Very Nice man! also, i heard that you are going to be playing the National Anthem on October 2nd! cant wait to see it Tomo!

  • hayzeus

  • I am you.

  • is you E tuned to a C

  • god-like skill!! Keep posting videos man, we are all in awe of that funky slap guitar!

  • It seems difficult to play those triplets... Hit strings twice with your right fingers and pull once... try that!

    Tomo

  • soo... showing off a bit there?

You should really rename your video.

  • Not really. I would like to help people. That's all.

    Thanks.

    Tomo

  • but its great man..

  • Thank you!

    Tomo

  • its not bass guitar man.. its a useless technique if you play with band in the stage..

  • goddamnit ar eyou gonna teach us or what? i've been waiting till the end of this video.. u just made us drool..

  • id recomend his DVD (Y)

  • Thank you!

    Tomo

  • Thank you! I gave my slap booklet for my students or who purchased my Hot Set (TMC dvd... etc) Thanks again!

    Tomo

  • that sounds better than my bassist.. lol..

  • god i love that sounds so fucking awsoem a lil like dnb

  • Thank you so much!

    Tomo

  • Hey Tomo, hope you are doing well. Miss doing lessons. We should do lessons soon. Take care and thanks for posting all the cool videos. Peace -G

  • Hello Mr.Tomo fujita. Do I need to master the exercises 1 by 1 on your AYGP 2? Thanks.

  • You don't have to finish AYGP dvd before you do AYGP 2. Better to do both together,,, and don't worry about everything.

    Tomo

  • Buy a higher resolution Camera for any lesson videos buddy pal chief...

  • sounds like my name is mus by primus

  • mud*

  • I could see this sounding like absolute shit when you're just learning it.

  • Take it easy... search for bass slapping excercises first. Next, learn to slap with the side of your thumb. Then try to pop A and D strings with fingers. This should take about 2 weeks. :)

  • Man, this video brings back memories of my private lessons with you. Your slapping technique is so cool. Nice video. Hope to see you soon. G.

  • Hey, not to be rude, but could you say the "basics" for doing this slap technique? Because, I have no idea how to do it. I see you use the thumb, so is it kind of a pluck/slap patteren? (:

  • @ErectionAtSchool It looks like he's slapping the guitar with his Thumb and Palm. He hits it with his palm to make a cool rhythm when he plucks the strings. Also, it appears he's adding some percussion with his fretting hand fingers. His guitar is on a setting that makes it very percussive. Very interesting video.

  • Lesson?

  • not a lesson if you ask me........... he never spoke at all..........for me its just some one playing around.

  • he plays it at tempo then slows it down. then speeds it up. the vid is to demonstrate the technique. learn from watching

  • Yeah but it would still be way more helpful if he explained it n all. I don't mind learning by watching but it takes more time than just opening your mouth and explaining :P

  • damnn

  • wow this sounds amazing! what kind of amp do you play through in this video?

  • Damn, you're AWESOME. Keep doing the amazing job, mate. Big hug from Brazil.

  • Tomo how come your slap lesson 2 & 3 videos are now marked private? they are just as awesome... wanna watch again.

  • Well, I made many lessons for my students who has funk/slap guitar book. Let me think about that.

    Thanks,

    Tomo

  • I can't seem to get a sound out of my guitar when I try to slap low E. I can get some sound when I turn the volume all the way up. Am I not slapping correctly? Would the type of guitar I'm using be an issue?

  • Where's the lesson?

  • Ah that was rude of me. It was still an amazing video.

  • how do you start to learn to play slap guitar?

  • I don't remember....but I love funky groove... bass...

    Tomo

  • hey i play guitar really wont to go to Berklee but i cant read music i play everything by ear can i still go

  • Whether you go to Berklee or not. You can learn how to read.. and sight-reading is one of way of communications. You should work on ear training too.

Both... having both... i encourage to learn anything... try them. So you know.....

    Tomo

  • well i tried learning how to read music and it just wasn't working for me and one day i just put on blues CD and just played along and its been working for me ever since and i will def check out Berklee thanks a lot man for your time

  • Whatever works for you. that's good. but there are other doors to improve your guitar playing... sometime you need to open these doors... more fun!

    Tomo

  • Tomo, you are the boss sir. That was amazing, not a missed note in sight and everything came out clean; mark of a true master!

  • Thank you so much for your kind words!

    Tomo

  • it's not really a lesson, is it....

just some geeky looking freak showing off....

    so f*cking what....

  • I really appreciate your time though,

    Thanks,

    Tomo

  • How does Berklee work? Can you go there with little to no band experience. Im pretty good for how long ive been playing.. id like to take online classes... tomo?

  • You should check out Berklee website for more detail info. Make sure that you have formal lessons etc. Check out online courses too.

    Tomo

  • you are amazing!

  • seriously,

    this is so good!!!

    just insane :O

  • Thank you!

    Tomo

  • Tomo, you are a fantastic musician, I would quite happily move to the US just to go to Berklee, unfortunately that is not possible right now. I'm going to try and learn this technique, and maybe post a video on it.

  • Thank you so much for your kind words. Berklee is great to place ... You can get my Accelerate Your Guitar Playing dvd... which has this ... or you can get my "Hot Set" comes with "slap guitar booklet"

    Thanks,

    Tomo

  • Nice, I'll look in to those DVD's and Booklets. Now where can I find the money to move to the USA. haha!

  • i can't follow those movements lol, i have never done slap guitar before, i don't know how you pop your strings so fast in those triplets or how you do those triplets in just funky

  • Thanks for watching!

    Tomo

  • yes, it's a nice lesson. I'm so GLAD it's not filled with a bunch of talk. This is the best way to learn something. fast, slow and slower. Break it down.

  • Thank you for your kind words. My AYGP dvd is like this... I wrote all details in the booklet. Thanks!

    Tomo

  • i disagree, i think it's important to know what you're doing, especially for the technique.

  • Dude Your really good at guitar. I'd love to jam with you someday. I saw you play with John Mayer! Wow your so lucky. How long have you been playin?

  • lucky?

    john mayer's lucky!

    he taught him.

i can't wait till i meet tomo when i start going to berklee

  • Nice technique! You look a bit like Eric Clapton lol.

  • you hit with all your finger, or just a bit with the end of the finger???

  • how hard is it to get into berklee? cuz i really REALLY wanna go like seriously ive never been more seious about anything in mai life than going into berklee

  • Please contact Berklee and find out by yourself! Go for it!

    Tomo

  • Is slapping in the wrist or a little bit of forearm and shoulder? It looks like when he slaps with his fist before he pops the string, hes using a bit of his forearm.

  • Sorry about that! I made this for my Berklee Blues/Funk lab and private lesson students. They have lesson booklet. Thanks for writing.

    Tomo

  • Tomo you have some serious funk going on, makes heads nod man :D

    Keep on rocking !

  • you should really make a video explaining what you are doing with your right hand during this, cause im tryin to figure it out and its really tough

  • Thanks for your interst.

    Tomo

  • its kinda of continuation of the slap but directly on the fretboard with your right hand

  • You are great Tomo. Thanks! Rich~

  • can u slow down and show how you do that quick slapping with just your right hand like at 0:55

  • can you only slap well with heavier strings?

  • I thought this was bass when I first opened the video! Great job!

  • I think you're great!

  • i am trying to widen my guitar reptiore, and incorperate as many techiques as i can into my style. I pretty much get the idea...but i used 9-46's.....would u recommend using a heavier gauge string? I felt like was about to snap the ones i was using.....or it might be that i have a floating bridge...

  • I think 10-46 set up is great for blues, funk, jazz.. I like 10-46 D'Addario strings. Thanks for watching! There is lesson material with TGP hot set. I teach this at Berklee's blues/funk lab. It's fun!

    Tomo

    Tomo

  • yea...i know that you teach at berkly, i tried to get into there...but im too broke, lol.

But if i do make it over there sometime, i will definantly come to the lab to at least thank you =D

  • wat taht slap repitition? Can someone cover this and have a slower lesson video on dat plz, thanx.

  • Hi Tomo, I bought your first DVD and I noticed that the slap guitar tabs in the booklet are different from slap guitar exercises you played in the accompanying video... Great stuff anyway.. cheers

  • Hey Tomo, first of all I just wanted to say i am a big fan. I was wondering if you ever taught this to John Mayer, because it seems like your slap guitar technique might have inspired Neon. Thanks.

  • Thank you so much for your kind words. I let you guess!

    Tomo

  • Thanks, this helped me alot. If you watch carefully enough its actually not that hard

  • You're welcome! I like to make people happy.. great to hear that. Enjoy it!

    Tomo
