Especially the younger people, we would rather watch the funniest clips on Youtube, or download our favorite TV shows on torrents, than to have to watch commercials every 5 minutes on network television. Conan doesn't appeal with the older audience because his humor is geared towards the younger generation. I think Letterman can appeal to both because he can be kind of goofy. The only thing I liked on Leno's shows was the street interviews and mock game shows. Otherwise he was very boring.

I think I know why Conan didn't do so well. Back in the late 90's when there wasn't Youtube, Myspace, or other generally entertaining night life to participate in, and a lot of people didn't have cable to watch other programming, you had a choice between prime time television channels. I remember watching Letterman, and then Conan, quite a bit during that time. Conan appeals to a wide audience, but television viewers are growing more and more scarce every day.

i think what everyone is failing to realize is that these Network shows are a dieing breed. NO one really cares about them. Prediction: Leno gets his old job back but it's a rouse by the networks who finally can his ass in less than a year. Conan re-invents himself on HBO with a cutting edge show.
