  • Am I the only one who thinks that Trent Reznor sounds a bit like Peter Gabriel in this? Perhaps a little bit like Seal, maybe?

  • Beautiful voice...

  • this was origionally by bryan ferry/roxy music, great song.

  • Wow Trent's wife has a surprisingly good singing voice!

  • This is a cover song.

  • Pretty funny to read comments on HTDA videos.

I discovered it before NIN, and both projects are damn good to me. Different, but good.

Reznor not working on NIN's albums? Who cares, he still working! :D

  • This song, combined with the final scene of the film... damn, it was fucking heartbreaking. :/

  • This is what I did:

    Step 1: Bought the album

Step 2: Rip the album into iTunes

Step 3: Got this track into my iPod.

Amazing the work that Trent made with his wife and Atticus Ross for this film!

  • as soon as i heard this it made me think of Legend (1986)

  • Happy Valentine's Day!!!

  • i'm more than a little disappointed in this track. there is nothing innovative about it, it brings nothing that the original Bryan Ferry version didn't. i was totally prepared to jump on this this HTDA cover, but i sat listening futilely for something to set it apart from the original or at least give something that scores of pseudo-gothrock bands fronted by angst-filled, former high school journal keepers haven't done already. i wish Reznor all the best, but this is decidedly mediocre at best

  • original version of this song was so much better

  • @TheOathtoOrder TRENT IS NIN! DUMBASS!

  • Great song and the girl sings great and I love how they mixed the vocals.

  • B B BRonzer. I wish I could say yes. If only I could stay awake.

  • Reznor is a demigod when it comes to making music. A full-fledged god when it comes to soundtracks.

  • This is absolutely awesome! can't wait till the new album comes out this year....

  • For the record, I am a big of Bryan Ferry's original, but this version is better

  • Help me.

  • It doesn't really start sounding like the song until midway through. Everything leading up to that is just ambiguous foreplay. Unfortunate.

  • @iReturnV1deotapes Hahaha it's called doing something with a song. Not just the regular 4/4 intro, oh what's up verse, what's up bridge, oh it's over cool.

  • @lits2722 That's what you call it. I call it rushed and unenjoyable. You don't spend half a song leading up to the climax so it can be over before you know it. It's the climax. It's the meat of the song. Would you spend half a novel discussing your characters, their behavior and their appearance and then wait until mid point to get to the plot?

  • this movie scared me. justin bieber hold me and let me caress your jesus tattoo.

  • Its about time you can actually hear her sing. In every other song, I have heard, the music over powers her voice.

  • The music reminds me of NIN's 'A Violet Fluid'

  • Anyone who says she cant sing is a fukn stupid dckhead! amazing song

  • Great reworking of this tune, originally performed by Brian Ferry on the soundtrack of the film Legend.

  • God I love this song, could've been a little longer though..

  • 8 people 're zombies.

  • who is the background singer?

  • @TheGorgorothSpire Sounds like Phil Collins.

  • @TheGorgorothSpire Trent Reznor

  • @boogydream oh ok, are you sure though?

  • How could it not be him?

  • @TheGorgorothSpire yes it is...since Trent makes up one-third of HTDA...he also did all the backing vocals on their EP so it's definitely him.

  • Trent should have sung the entire track

  • after three hours of plucking strings, trent was like 'fuck it, i'm gonna sing'.

  • Wow, so I was listening to this entire album and when it got to the end (this song) I was blown away. I really didnt expect this! This was a great way to end a GREAT album to a GREAT movie. The movie was absolutely phenomenal and easily became one of my favorites. Listening to this album all I could think of was the chemistry between Blomkvist and Lisbeth.

  • @ps474paul Mazzy Star? This is nothing like Mazzy Star!!

  • he did a great job on the soundtrack. and this is a nice song. I'm 55. I saw NIN at Lolapalooza "back in the day". Trent Reznor is his own man making his own music, and that's always evolving..... Good for him.

  • @90210Markymark Seen you bitching on other HTDA, so having noticed that you keep commenting on those videos I'm going to make what I believe is a fairly accurate assumption-you're a lonely griever/troll who can't get over the fact that Trent is doing something different and with his wife. If you where smart you would grow the fuck up, realize Trent doesn't care if you don't like the project and go and listen to NIN. He is happy doing what he wants to do, is that such a crime?!?!

  • COOL!

  • Thank God it has people who appreciate music like this. Trent without a doubt sir you are a musical savior for those to whom music is more than something to listen to but to feel as well. If I may eloquently put it: fuk the 99%

  • 2:58 trent reznor "peter gabriel mode" activated

  • I can almost hear Saul Williams, but he is not noted on Album....so who's male voice is that?

  • @Maverickender Trent Reznor

  • wow her voice is way better than what was shown on HTDA earlier album. her voice was too soft on that album, very lacking the emotion i expected. but this sounds really nice. wow Great job Mariqueen

  • Tangerine Dream's "Is Your Love Strong Enough" and this version are really awesome!

  • im not saying it's a great cover but the fact that ive been playing this song for 34 times since yesterday means i dig some part of this song , like how it turned into Gary Numan's Down in the Park at @2:36 to end , and the background vocal. this is fair ending to the soundtrack but i love the rest of soundtrack more.

  • What's not to like - atmospheric and haunting, and I bet Bryan likes it!

  • Haunting

  • 3 things

I hate that no one in my generation (born in early 90s, i'm 17) even knows who NIN let alone HTDA is...

also I hope their album is a bit more like it is at 2:05 to the end , as in faster/not so much focus on the vocals(no offence to Mariqueen, her voice is beautiful), than the rest of the song,

    and

Hho else likes Trent's work on the "immigrant song" cover?

  • @TheDeadlyAngles79 Agreed, I also think old NIN (before With Teeth) is better than new NIN.

  • @TheDeadlyAngles79 I'm in your generation (sort of, right on 1990) and I've known NIN since my early teens. I wouldnt be who I am today without Trent's amazing musical influence. :)

  • I just don't get it. I love NIN but this is just some mare glimpse of what Reznor is capable of. This song is pale in comparison to the original. I always thought that NIN fans have good taste in music... I guess I was wrong. It's mediocre at best! Now you can give more negative votes...

  • One of my favorite songs. I love this remake.

  • Dont understand all the hate on Mariqueen's vocals or Mariqueen in general. I think her vocals are great, much better than the vocals on the EP. If this is what the LP is going to sound like, than I cant wait.

  • amazing!

  • @stefanbana You should too

  • Even better than the original! Thank you, Trent, for putting out yet another great cover.

  • end credits!

    end credits!

    end credits!

  • Meh.

  • @DHDirectX You're meh. :P

  • I can't get enough of this song." Touches me right there" . Fuck Yes!

  • the song starts at 2:07;]

  • This song is the shit

  • Trent got soft? Well as much as I adore his early work (brutally dark, full of despair, aggression, etc), this is fucking awesome.

I don't think Mariqueen has "gotten into his head", I think he continues to grow and mature. And as it happens, he opens up to doing things that don't always have to revolve around darkness. I guess not everyone is going to appreciate that.

    Thanks Trent, Atticus, and Mariqueen!

  • @stephlynn1982 trent gets soft and i get hard ;)

  • @stephlynn1982 but if u ask me, "pretty hate machine" was his poppiest album. so it's more like a return to form if anyone thinks he's more mellow or less abrasive as he was on downward spiral / the fragile

he still has great musical sensibility, as u can see on ghosts... something i have to youtube more of now

  • In contrary to what was said, Mariqueen's vocal was so drowned in effects on the EP that one could barely get to know her voice (apart from listening to West Indian Girl). Her vocals aren't bad! Maybe they're not something extraordinary too, but how come her voice and the music are two key aspects that attract me to HTDA? It's a matter of taste, I'd say.

  • trent got soft. first zoo station and now this. iunno bro but i think shes gotten in his head.. sad really. record some more NIN please. sans wife. thank you.

  • @2011Royb It's not the case. Trent said himself, that he wanted to do something new - and How to Destroy Angels is the effect of his new work, he does what he want.

  • Very good song - as far as the music and Trent's/Atticus's interpretation is concerned. Mariqueen - nothing special. Trent's vocals - good as always, but his voice becomes more and more like Peter Gabriel's :) is it good or wrong? who knows...it's different. But if he wants to play more mature songs in the future, he vocals will fit perfectly :)

  • Instant goosebumps!

  • This song is amazing.

    Mariqueen's voice is beautiful.

Nice job Mariqueen, Atticus, and Trent.

  • so incredibly perfect...wonderful cover.

  • Never heard the original. The fact Trent chose to cover it is about the greatest compliment it could get.

  • @CalleighMacbeth My parents had loads of Roxy Music's albums and some of Bryan Ferry's on tape but annoyingly only one song on iTunes. Probably worth searching out though.

  • fuckin eargasm

  • Fantastic cover :)

  • "But underneath we’re not so tough and love is NOT enough."

  • @GenineM Exactly what I was thinking.

  • I think her voice fits the song. It's nice and easy and graceful on the ears. I don't think vocal olympics would match this particular song at all.

  • Comment removed

  • very fitting to have a female lead vocal on this one, considering it's contextual use for the movie. I'm a fan. Hail Trent, Mariqueen, and Atticus!

  • Is that TR's vocals in the background at 3:13? 3:27 etc.? This is interesting. Milder than the other HTDA work in some ways, but still raw and graceful. I love it.

  • Comment removed

  • Holy shit... Best tune I heard in a long time.

  • this is awful

  • @ztcatchy The way your mother sucks dick, that's horrible...this is amazing.

  • @ztcatchy What the heck is wrong with you? This song is beautiful!

  • @NickJonasLover496 nothing is wrong with me, I just love the music that is really beautiful. and this crap can't be compared to Bryan Ferry's classic.

  • I don't know why everyone is complaining about Mariqueen's voice, I think her vocals are gorgeous. She may not have the uncanny abilities of Trent, but I think she's a very capable singer in her own right.

  • @MikeyTalented true, her vocals are technically proficient. but nothing extraordinary.

  • Fucking WOW! nuff said

  • trent's brief backing vocals pack more of a punch than mariqueen's throughout the entire song.

  • @coldlyonshelves Obviously! I wish it was Trent singing this, and his wife on backing vocals. I just don't like Mariqueen as much at all for some reason...maybe because of who she is.

  • @coldstaind91 What is wrong with Mariqueen?

  • @narcissticgoddess I don't know...I will admit her voice is beautiful...but it just seems so out of place for such a hard-hitting, electro, industrial metal instrumental soundtrack. Karen O's voice fits like a fucking condom on "Immigrant Song"...I just doubt I'll get used to Mariqueen's voice.

  • @coldstaind91 Meh, I always felt the opposite. Karen O's performance on Immigrant Song did fit the heavy vibe of the song, but the fact is it's not an industrial metal soundtrack. It can get dark, it can get aggressive, but it's not like Broken, for example.

With the material Trent's put out lately (heck, even the typical NIN songs over the course of the last 20 years), I'd much rather have a pretty voice to go along with it.

  • i kinda want an instrumental version not keen on the vocals :/ i want nin back

  • Beautiful.

  • Good cover version!! Great voice beter than Mr Ferrys ;)

  • WOW!!!!!

  • This is one of those rare, delicious instances where the cover outdoes the original.

    Bravo, Mariqueen! :D

  • ...it'd be cool to have a Robin Finck solo as part of the cover.

  • HOLY FUCKING CRAP I KINDA HAVE A HISTORY WITH THIS SONG I CANT BELIEVE THIS REALLY EXISTS WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OH MY GODDD

  • v "and the Oscar goes to..." :D

  • i mean , "and the winners are..."

  • i can already hear "and the winner is..."

  • Mariqueen's vocals like a goddess, wow an amazing team!

  • Also , I saw an interview where Trent said that he is going to focus on NIN next year in terms of writing and maybe even a full release. HTDA album release and maybe a new NIN album. 2012 is going to be a great year.

  • Really loving the song. I like Mariqueen's vocals better here than on the EP. Heard the full LP was coming out in the next few months. Cant wait!

  • perfecta

  • oh my god this is incredible!

  • That's not a vocoder, it's a delay / doubler. Trent leaves his vocal mistakes in most of the time. He's pitchy sometimes on "Demon Seed", but there are definitely heavy vocal edits on "In This Twilight", for example. It depends on what the song needs. A creative excuse for overdubs is trying to represent all of humanity as the world ends... haha. Trent thinks about imperfection vs. perfection, and perfection in imperfection more than any of us probably. Truly extraordinary cover though. :)

  • Does Trent's voice sound like Peter Gabriel to anyone else?

  • @poonerpoob Exactly my thoughts, still can't believe thats him.

  • @poonerpoob To me, it sounds more like Ozzy. I do not think that is Trent Reznor.

  • @gardendawn it doesn't matter what you think

  • and yes they all 3 deserve credit...its HOW TO DESTROY ANGELS..not just one or the other.

  • this leaves me breathless...wow..amazing cover...

  • This is an excellent cover. I love this song. It's featured during the end credits of Ridley Scott's Legend (1985).

  • @StokerACE10 You just blew my mind. I love that movie, totally forgot about the song.

  • Took 'em long enough. I finally have a theme song epic enough for December. :3

  • Yeah Trents great but what about Mariqueen and Atticus. They deserve alot of credit too people.

  • @Spectre1545 not really

  • Ah.

  • 2:45...Sounds like Enigma...Michael Cretu..etc

  • Oh, how I missed this genius.

  • cute little trenty

  • Oooh and now speak, haters, do you still think Mariqueen is just a new Yoko and she can't sing at all? Awesome song!

  • This just skyrocketed to being one of my favorite songs. I am not just saying this. This is truly a beautiful song.

  • To me that doesn't sound like Trent at all, are we sure that's him?

  • @decayedmatter I'm fairly sure that's Trent, just under a layer of distortion and slightly muffled against the background. Keep in mind, the older he's gotten the deeper his voice has grown.

  • @awake352 yeah, he's got a vocoder but it's definitely his voice. I think his voice sounds better when it's deeper- his performances on songs like "Year Zero" are my favourites.

I thought this was a little weak to start, but it builds up loads after the halfway point :) It's definitely distinct from NIN- I couldn't picture Trent doing this whole song on his own.

  • oh. just forget that mariqueen and atticus are also a part of htda. cunts

  • Finally! I can hear her voice clearly! No more whispering.. good song!

  • Could overcome The Social Network score?

  • Amazingly done! Kudos to you all!

  • AWESOME!!!!

  • Cool. Yes, i'm still in love with Trent Reznor.

  • Fucking Awesome!

  • Amazing!!! Can't wait to buy the album!

  • Oh yeah Trent come on !

  • That was seven shades of awesome, fuck the haters.

  • :-O That is Trent in the second half of the song? That's some serious vocal change :-|

    But loving this nevertheless!

  • I miss Trent's voice so much. I'm loving everything he just put out tonight, but I hope one day he puts out some work for NIN. He's really stepped up his game this time around. I'm floored by these tons of tracks he essentially gave to us.

  • welcome back, trent

  • @MrBarlieCharlie Welcome back? Trent never left...

  • @Brevvder He hasn't done vocals since 2008.

  • @MrBarlieCharlie You're wrong - He sings in a new version of Zoo Station - the newest song of NIN, published 2 months ago

  • @MrBarlieCharlie He did backing vocals on HTDA's EP

  • Song like this, quite a challenge for a vocalist if you ask me. Very impressive.

  • Trent's wife is on lead vocals for this band.

  • This is so much better than anything off of the EP

  • Trent is a fucking genius!!!

  • I wish Trent would have done the entire vocals on this track! I love his voice so much!!!

  • Wow. The second half...the vocals...Sounds like the Trent I know!!!
