I used mustard to patina mine. I made a sort of tiger stripe pattern. In the stripes there's a blue and redish tint to it in certain light, so basically the blade changes color when its in the shade or it's dusk/night time, where there isn't much light. During the day, or in direct light it's just a regular grey pattern. After I washed it off, it still smelled funny.
Patina: I lked the results from the orange. Placing the knife up to the handle/scale in a glass of vinegar over night gives a quite uniform patina treatment. Works espectially well on carbon steel. Next apply some good gun oil. stonenstrop
Just dip the blade in a glass of green apple juice, it produces a perfect patina, leave it over night, the blade will turn nearly black, awesome look.
i tryed it to lol on this old bayinnet i had i sanded it and sharpend it and it did work but it rubed off ? i did not no if that was part of it it wont lost for ever.. but it did look cool but yaa then i took car wax to it and put a shine on it lol
hmm, like acid etching, which very well may be what is actually occuring. lol, hey Tony, if they shipped it as such, we would be wanting our money back! I do very much like the look, and really adds character. So, does the citrus fruit get eaten or not?
Tony, your friend might have had a high carbon blade like the Mora 2000, but the Sandvik stainless wont react with the citrus, its made that way for food prep. Hence the name stainless.
I know Sandvik, or Mora use different steels in their different Mora blades.
a patina is sort of like rust but not in a bad way its a permanent rust bonding to the metal surface once a knife has a full patina it seals the steel pores in so it prevents further rusting in the future, its something that you cant avoid with carbon steel blades so some guys force a patina ahead of time so they can make it look nice...I have a video on this too...most acidic things can do this, mustard, citrus, ect...you cna repeat the process to get it more even or darker...

Wow, that's the best home-brewed patina I've seen. I have a feeling if I try it it'll look like a cat walked through some seagull plops. NIce job.

Patina is a type of rust
Hissatsu5 3 months ago
@Hissatsu5 Yes, isn't it cool!
ArtisanTony 3 months ago
it stains the blade. its the easy way of getting color on a carbon knife without buying a five dollar bottle of cold blue.
poormanprepper 4 months ago
like some people have mention, there are foods that will cause a patina, lemons, limes, apples, oranges, mustard, even white white vinegar.
WolfWoodWorks 5 months ago
I did mine with lime juice. It was by accident, but it still looks cool.

@SailfishSoundSystem haha, I like the way they look afterward.

@ArtisanTony You can use mustard as well. It allows you do do more precise designs.

@guldahlrahmi Sounds like a good idea! I like oranges though :)
ArtisanTony 7 months ago
i think this was really cool, do u think it would work with any metal, and also how long must it stay in the oranges for?
knifecraiz 8 months ago
@knifecraiz I let it stay in the orange fr about 30 minutes. The longer you leave it the more effect you will get. Thanks!
ArtisanTony 8 months ago
@knifecraiz as long as it has a fair amount of carbon
themegajosh09 8 months ago
You get a much more even gray finish if you wipe down the blade with rubbing alcohol first. That takes off ALL the oils, even oils from your fingers.
SianReynolds 9 months ago
@SianReynolds That sounds smart but I like the uneven finish. Thanks!
ArtisanTony 9 months ago
does this hurt the blade at all or make it hard to sharpen or anything?
lostcoz99 9 months ago
@lostcoz99 No, the blade holds a pretty good edge and I think it looks cool! :)

tarnishing, oxidizing, weathering, or rusting. take your pick it's all the same thing. still it does look cool.
