This was one of my favorite game shows of all time. It really is too bad that it only lasted one season. Art James was one of the best - up in the league of Bill Cullen who is the master of the master of ceremonies!
I always loved this show. In fact, I would have to say it's probably one of my top 10 all-time favorite game shows. Too bad it only lasted for one season here in the states. Thanx for posting this -- sure brings back memories! :-)
it's pretty much exactly like the uk version with the "bonus bank" known as the "super catch phrase" no ready money round and the money is a little bigger.
Shame there isn't any of the actual gameplay in this clip, I would be interested to see if there are more similarities with the UK version (that animated diamond was used in both versions for a start).
This was the last game show Art James ever hosted. Such a superb but unfortunately underrated host who was every bit as sophisticated and intellectual as Bill Cullen, Allen Ludden, and Alex Trebek.
I doubt it. Art's birth name was Artur Simeonvich Elimchik (and he was born in Dearborn, Michigan!), while Dennis' was Demi James Sposa (born in Jersey City, New Jersey).
I never remembered the opening sequence of the show right up until a few years ago. Not only that but I thought that that diamond was just a harmless triangle.
@imagesunlimiteduk Actually, it only lasted 16 weeks in the U.S. It was canceled after that.

They have the 'diamond pattern' on the screen just like in the early TVS UK version!

Roy Walker's Catch Phrase PWNS Art James's Catch Phrase. At least they showed some enthusiasm in the UK.

How come the US version of Catchphrase lasted 1 season wile the catchphrase in Britian last several...
(Answer constructively please...)
MrSoprano0125 3 years ago
if oyu know catchphrase was first brodcasted in the 80s. by roy walker the original comperar
dim432 3 years ago
Possibly because of differences in viewing figures?
Hoddersrevenge 3 years ago
Budget problems. Catchphrase in the US was gone by mid-January. A few other shows have had that problem as well.

It was just alot more popular in the UK.

We knew that. In fact, I think more people here know of the British version than the American one.

I believe this was Art James' last game show. Although he did play a game show host in the movie "Mallrats".

I remember watching the game show "Catch Phrase" when I was 4 or 5 years old. It's more fun to watch!
