@TheReaver11 if you look at the sails that are on the Airship you can see they are positioned as rudders so they can move the front of the ship. additionally the sails are used to catch wind so the ship can use less fuel
@NineTurningMirrors I take it you don't subscribe to their email newsletter? The Ophelia was converted into an airship, and the mast/sails are remnants from when it was a nautical vessel.
@KobunLord Besides, if the sails can catch a wind and turn her in the right direction, they can be useful. From the looks of the ship, the sails can be tucked or drawn to avoid drag when the propellers are pushing the ship faster than the sails.
@KrisTheBear it could have a purpose too. because think about the hindenburg. it crashed cause they couldnt slow it down in time. the sails would slow it down in time XD idk but thats just how i see it.
@NineTurningMirrors Kobun explained it well enough, but also remember that there are upper-atmosphere wind currents. Sails could be used as propulsion on an airship just as much as on a seagoing vessel.
Moreso, really, since wind currents are more consisant at higher altitudes!
@TasteOfTorment I looked up the lyrics. A traitor sets fire to the airship and escapes, leaving the ship and its crew to plunge into the ocean. This is one my favorite of Abney Park's songs.
@TasteOfTorment Robert discusses how fans have gotten confused as to thinking that the end of Abney Park was near
"At this point, fans were getting very worried! I had posts, and emails, and tweets from worried fans"
He then goes on to mention, however;
"And if you are at all still worried, hear it directly from me: I've already started on the first three songs of the NEXT album. A captain's work is never done, and Abney Park will go on!"

Sails on an airship are slightly impractical unless balanced with an equal amount of sail on the opposite side of the ship.

But the crew stayed at its post
And the Captain at his wheel!
We all endured the wrath of fate
But thought our fate was sealed
A chain’s as weak as its weakest link
And rust did cut us through
But strength in arms and hearts and heads
Held 'cause our course was true!!!

At Steamball we all danced in a circle to this. My best friend and I started it too ^^
And I got signatures and pics with Captain Robert <3

I love Abney Park and this song but I don't get one thing: what are SAILS doing on an AIRSHIP? All they can do is slow her down.

@KobunLord Also, the winds in the atmosphere are extremely fast and could easily propel the Ophelia along with its winds.

@NineTurningMirrors Depends which way into the wind they're going?
whowantsabighug 1 year ago
@whowantsabighug Actually not. Bloody impractical at all courses with respect to the wind. But extremely cool-looking at the same time.

@NineTurningMirrors i think it has to do with the fact that the ophelia was a nautical vessle. a prototype airship.

@NineTurningMirrors also saves on coal when theres a wind

@NineTurningMirrors it was a sea ship before it was an air ship:)

@NineTurningMirrors Sails could actually be used on an airship if it wasn't purely a dirigible and was partly wind-powered.

@NineTurningMirrors depends on which way the wind is blowing XD
nukebacon876 4 months ago
@NineTurningMirrors If you have good wind, you can spare fuel by using sails.
Event though, I agree with you, since sails get pretty pointless when you have a large balloon full of air and/or light gas.
