  • My 1st new car was a 90 GT with 5 speed. I decided to go to my old hometown and show it to a buddy. He was driving when a RX7 came up behind us. I looked at my friend and said "let's see what she'll do" and we were off. We were even when we grabbed 5th @ 122mph (dead zone for the 3.1) except we hit a small dip just as he shifted causing the tires to bark. Mazda guy must have thought we broke the tires loose when we hit 5th because he slowed and did a U turn and we never saw him again.

  • i just found out from my friend that gm does have the 3.1L as a 5 speed and my friend took out his 3.1L and put in a 2.8L because he blown his old motor up. but i wanna get a 97 grand am 5 speed and put in a 3.4L with 5 speed or maybe the 3.8L supercharged

  • Its called a rev limiter... In the Case of the slightly less powerful (170hp) HO Quad 4 that came in the few rare z26's that hit it, the rev limiter cuts fuel to the cylinders to keep the engine from over revving and blowing up.

    Did you hear this video at all? Rev limiters do not close the throttle body, letting off the throttle does.

  • yea, for sure. evo9's are sick too. yea the video was uploaded 2 years ago..and was shot like 3 years ago..the TRUTH is.. i just dumped the clutch in first gear and held the throttle to the floor till it stoped spinning, and it did just hit rev limiter 3 times. no shifting, but no letting off the throttle.. car prob didnt have that much power to spin again after letting off

Pop on some Ultra high performance wheels, and make sure you get a short shifter conversion, and stage 2 gearing.   • I just watched it, it's a pretty cool video. You have one if the nicer examples of a Fox Body. Most of the people that own Third Gen Mustangs and Camaros have them ragged out, barely running.

    I agree that the Beretta is a smaller car in size and also slower than newer Z28`s. Older Z 28`s and V6 Camaros have a tough time with Beretta GTZ`s though since they are far lighter and have decent power with the Quad 4 engine. In terms of handling even newer Z28`s are not comparable to a GTZ. The GTZ`s just feels more nimble and has more grip in corners.

    149 mph from the factory? I doubt that. I raced a stock 305 Camaro on the german motorway and completely destroyed him. My Quad 4 Beretta GTZ does 143 mph with a NA 4 cylinder engine all factory with only W41 cams upgrade which came stock in some Quad 4 engines. I think that is pretty decent for such a car. I agree that most Berettas are a little slow but Quad 4 GTZ`s run quite well for what they have under their hood.

    They did 149. Go and look it up. A select few of the 5.0 TPI's came with 225 Horsepower stock, and 300 FT.-LBS. of Torque. With most weighing right around 3,400, they can easily do 149. Factoring in a driver and gasoline, I'd estimate 3,650 LBS. With that weight, and a .34 drag coefficient, it takes roughly 220 HP to do 155.

    With 225 hp I won`t deny that 149 mph are possible. I just know that the normal 305 Camaros with an auto trans were rather slow. Also the rear live axle with its large unsprung mass will hop around quite a bit on rough surfaces. But all in all I like Camaros and Trans Ams.

    Motortrend tested the GTZ at 0.92 G`s too and recorded a higher slalom speed than the Camaro. Handling wise the GTZ`s are really good but I can understand that you don`t want to swap a Z28 for Z26 or GTZ.

    I didn`t want to pick up a fight here. I know that my GTZ will loose in a straight line to all the cars you listed. I still like to drive the Beretta though, gets 30+ mpg on average and isn`t a slouch either. I love Camaros, TA`s, Corvettes etc, don`t get me wrong.

  • Not all the Z26's came with 5 speeds. Just the 94 model with the Quad 4. The 95 and 96 Z26 got the 3100.

  • Actually I have a 1998 Mazda Protege LX as a daily driver and it has a 5 speed MTX, so I definitely know how to drive stick. BTW, I have a fast car, it's a 1996 Ford Taurus SHO, and it's pretty rare itself. In fact, I'm about to put a manual tranny into it because I hate the standard auto tranny. And don't lie about shifting, because no matter how fast you shift you would have had to hit the clutch, and what I hear is continuous throttle

  • The 1994 also came with the 3100 motor, I drove that car back then and it had some balls... The Quad 4 was ditched for good with the 1995 model, I believe...
