@Danno57 I read through all the comments and your the only one to comment on the clipped wing. The most striking difference of all the marks. Done to enhance low altitude performance. And the P 40? The best American plane of the war to sport a sharks mouth. The worst? P 51. Never saw a P47 with a mouth but I have seen (fotos) of a P 38. Pretty cool.
The Mk.V was very versatile but the Mk.IX was basically the same with a better engine, it could also keep up with a Fw190-A. The XVI was pretty good as well, basically an IX with bubble canopy and a packard merlin.
im thinking about buying or aybe even building a P-40 warhawk, does anyone know the costs or where i could get one.message me on my youtube page or here.THANKS!
Pilot skill > plane. Also it depends on the situation. The spitfire, in most cases, can out turn the p-51 but the P-51 can out run the spitfire. The p-40 at high altitudes wasn't as good as most planes of the time, where as the p-51 wasn't good at low altitudes.
What do you mean by 'beat'? The zero's were amazing, but they had shortcomings as much as the P-40... mostly, they had no armor, which made them light, but very open to damage to the cockpit and pilot. Couple that with the fact that the skin was Magnesium, which ignited very quickly when shot with a machine gun...
@jurdao14785 No they didn't. There is no records of any losses against Japanese Zeroes. The Mustang was the pinnacle of prop warplane technology, it could outclimb, outdive and out gun any zero made. It never really saw any zero's in combat, not what you consider a zero. Mustangs made it to the pacific after they helped mop up the European skies. They were used for long range bomber escorts, and since it was the end, they didn't do it for long.
yea lol the hurricane shot down more fighters then anyother raf plane put together, so you could say it was the hurricane that helped with us the battle of britain.
IMO next to the Australian Lighthorsemen of WWI, the RAF pilots during the Battle of Britain are among the bravest bunch of men history has ever seen, knowingly flying outnumbered against a deadly enemy. and this is coming from a yank...
I love vintage.

@SmiertSpionem Ilike the MK IX most, but in terms of outline the MKI is the most beautiful to me. Like the short nose pretty much.
rockithoney 2 years ago
Yeah the the Mk.1 is cute looking, but the IX is a bit more imposing with the long nose, and cannons.

SmiertSpionem not all Mk XVIs had bubble hoods.

I did say 'basically', also they had a reshaped cowling.
