Pitch-perfect rendition of this amazing Kate Bush song -- Hayley has an exquisite voice, and the video is well done (unlike Kate's videos, this one directly references Emily Brontë's book). However, it lacks the passion, anguish, and near-madness that comes across in Kate's version. Perhaps it's a personality thing; I'd like to hear Hayley record this again when she's a little older, more mature, and has perhaps acquired that "luminous darkness" which Kate always projects, Still, excellent!
I can tell she's acting far too much here, it's way out of character, and she also sounds more like she's trying to copy Kate Bush too much. It's not natural at all...I like the version on Pure better.
Does somebody know where can I find THIS version of the song? The one I´ve got form the Pure Album doen´t sound the same way (it has different percussion and guitars).

Ok, I'm a fan of both. Here is the biggest difference I see...Kate has more passion in the songs no doubt about it. Now, that being said...Hayley is for sure incredibly beautiful. Though I do prefer the straight hair on her. She's gorgeous. Bottom line is...you don't have to just like one...liking both versions is ok!

Hayley doesn't sound like a muppet, It sounds pretty instead of sounding like something from Xanadu and her 'wuthering's don't sound either demonic or like she's a frog. Therefore, I personally find Hayley is much better. She also doesn't come to me in my nightmares.

Hayley sounds very similar to the original. I think she loves that song so much she didn't want to change it. I really enjoy both versions equally in terms of music. However Kate is more convincing in her video as a ghost.

For "light listening", I enjoy this version more. I think Hayley's voice is smoother over all and thus, better suited for a casual listen (in the case of this song at least - her version of "Across the Universe of Time" gives me shivers)
Kate's original has this wonderful vibe that works for a ghost story, but I have to be in the mood for it specifically. That unique pitch that she has makes the song more eerie, but makes it harder to listen to more than once in a while.

Of course she sings it well, and so would more than a thousand other females. Don't oversimplify the world. On rare occasion do you see people create in transcendence, Kate did that, and this is generic. If this stuff always ran the world there wouldn't be a wuthering heights to sing.

It was a cold day in Great Tew when we filmed this. However, I have to say Hayley was brilliant, she did not miss a beat - most of the scenes were filmed in one take.
@matthew1234mya I can agree with the intensity statement and the lack of elegance But, I think, that the sharp movements and failing of the arms better suits the book. There was nothing calm and elegant about heathcliff and cathy's romance. Just a thought.

Don't forget that Kate Bush *wrote* Wuthering Heights when she was 18, and wrote Man with the Child in His Eyes when she was 13 (and recorded when she was 16). There are plenty of great singers in the world. I just don't like this performance because it's flat.
This song is a classic and it is hard to outdo Kate Bush's original version because she wrote it and her intentions of the song are uniquely hers. While I do not think that Hayley Westenra conveyed the same haunting quality she did a solid job. Not an easy song to sing and very few people can pull it off like her and the pop divas of today would not even attempt this. Hayley sings as beautiful as she looks. I prefer the guitar solo on the original but that is another point of contention.

Of course she sings it well, and so would more than a thousand other females. Don't oversimplify the world. On rare occasion do you see people create in transcendence, Kate did that, and this is generic. If this stuff always ran the world there wouldn't be a wuthering heights to sing.

I like her voice and agree the live version is better, but it doesn't seem like she knows what she's singing about. Kate wrote the song and can obviously sing it the way it should be sung.

I like both Hayley and Kate's versions about equally. Granted, Kate makes a more convincing ghost. Hayley's dancing talent is a bit limited too. But, whatever, I like Hayley anyway.

Actually Hayley's own live version is much better than this one.
That one gave me chills like Kate's does.
This studio version is flat.
Has a going through the motions type feeling to it.

@snowball1988 true true, I never said this 'Hayley person' is better, I said I prefer this version. what she does best here is not trying to do a slavish imitation of Kate Bush, stamping her own identity she makes it her own. That is why I feel such comparisons aren't fair by Hayley. Hayley is unique, as far as her singing prowess is concerned she is equally good(if not better ;-)), may be not so when it comes to elegance of movement as someone else had commented here.

@FantasyAnimal Great. I know a lot of teenagers who love it, most of them 12 years old. Westerna's vocal reminds me of kids singers- kind of bare,To me it lacks that amazing passion which should better not be there in kids songs... It's good for Disney princesses, but not enough for me after hearing the original.

Like I've been saying I personally prefer this cover better than the original (which ocmpletely shocks me since I usually prefer the original) but have you ever heard her other songs? Because she doesn't really sing like that in any of them. They are better for adults. I think this one is too but actually, most songs can still be considered 'kids' music. But again, I get what you mean. Completely.

@FantasyAnimal Hmm, yes. I work with kids so they share what they love with me. Better Westenra than Kesha anyway! As they say, she's not my cup of tea ;) Maybe in a couple of years? I have been spoiled by Bush and that kind of pop is just not my type
I am not saying the girl can't sing. She's obviously talented. As you said, the song is BIG, maybe too big for her at that stage but it's still nice she put her girly sweetness in it and made this enjoyable video. I must admit she's classy, too.

She sure is and I suppose it could have been better. I think that if she worked on it again and remade the song it would be much better today. Her live version I do know is even better than this one by far regardless of that.

It was a cold day in Great Tew when we filmed this. However, I have to say Hayley was brilliant, she did not miss a beat - most of the scenes were filmed in one take.

@matthew1234mya I can agree with the intensity statement and the lack of elegance But, I think, that the sharp movements and failing of the arms better suits the book. There was nothing calm and elegant about heathcliff and cathy's romance. Just a thought.

Sigh. I think this is a good mimic of Kate's original, but I'd like to see a cover bring something super different to the table. This Hayley lady is obviously wildly talented and this is nothing to sneeze at, but I think the quirk factor of the original has been lost.
That being said, it's still quite enjoyable.

I love this version of Wuthering Heights!!!In my opinion, it's way better than the original.Her voice is so much fresher and vibrant thatn miss. Bush's. :) And I'm sorry, again this just my opinion, but I think Kate Bush's video falls in the creepy category. She reminds of Sarah Brightman's videos, only again Sarah Brightman has a way better voice. Sorry Kate, not a fan. I'll probably get blasted for this comment....but I reall y could care less.

I thought the live performance was ok, but this totally just kills everything. And there is no way this is better than the original. If I didn't know the lyrics, i would probably think Hayley was singing just another love song - Kate's Wuthering Heights is so much more than just that.

flat? this is about as 3d as you can get. it highlights her incredibly smooth voice and range (by all accounts, easily among the best). and i like the fact she doesn't sound "operatic," as i've always HATED the modulation other singers put in their voices. stark, pure... excellent and nothing will change my opinion.

@codeguyqb64 I think Hayley Westenra has a fantastic voice, given the right material. But this is very flat and emotionless. Don't forget that Kate Bush *wrote* Wuthering Heights when she was 18, and wrote Man with the Child in His Eyes when she was 13 (and recorded when she was 16). There are plenty of great singers in the world. I just don't like this performance because it's flat.

This song is a classic and it is hard to outdo Kate Bush's original version because she wrote it and her intentions of the song are uniquely hers. While I do not think that Hayley Westenra conveyed the same haunting quality she did a solid job. Not an easy song to sing and very few people can pull it off like her and the pop divas of today would not even attempt this. Hayley sings as beautiful as she looks. I prefer the guitar solo on the original but that is another point of contention.
