  • Significant support my American bum. Censoring the internet will further turn the talented with computers against the government that censors. All information should be free!

  • help protest against abc

  • If this goes through I'm retreating to another country.

This is an unbelievable and stupid idea.

I'm not letting the internet be attacked without one hell of a fight.

I say, DOWN WITH THE FUCKING LABOR GOVERNMENT!

  • I am preparing the pipe bombs and molotovs. This is one of the most serious issues facing Aussies right now but the media is to scared to cover it so noone is taking action.

Conroy has no idea about the implications of his actions

  • Im going to leave for ether japan or thailand when i finsh uni because of that

  • Like putting fluoride in water to protect the childrens teeth. Sounds great, but the Nazis also used fluoride to make folks docile. They can't control the internet like they can the corporate owned mass media, and that is why they need to "protect" us from it. Thin end of the wedge, and the wedge always gets bigger. Big government is no substitute for folks taking responsiblity for their own behaviour.

  • Youtube is in wrong hands, who try to control it.Logic, because Youtube -videos are more dangerous than regular media.Anybody can upload a video by own wishes. The media shows controlled information and is not a treath to.....

  • yeah bullshit. Half if not all the crap on television and the newspapers is half baked unreliable material not to mention the lack of morality in some articles, tv series and etc. Mass media is propaganda for this new system that is slowly being introduced into the world. It's so draconian, you will feel like a bloody asset and not a human being.

  • Smart arse.

  • This really makes me feel sick.

As some of you have said, the Internet is the last bastion of free speech and we can -NOT- let it go down without one helluva fight.

  • And yet, the Australian public don't care, because they're stuck in the 1990's when the internet was for nerds. They'll miss it once its gone. But since they don't care about their rights, they don't deserve them.

  • What about me? I'm Australian, -I- care.

    Maybe I should just fucking move already, right? ;_;

  • Learn French. They care about their rights. I'm going to piss off to another country if this doesn't get shot down immediately.

  • This is hilarious.

Je SUIS française. Française/australienne. Peut-être c'est pour ça que je m'énerve tant, hein?

  • France is another testing ground of concepts for a new socialist-like system that is being planned for the entire world. I know it sounds crazy, but we will be seeing more and more national unions and soon, all the worlds unions will unite and put an end to all legal and financial complexities, governance and resource management. It's a bold new idea, and it will be successful.

  • But whats the point? Censorship became redundant as soon as the internet was invented because it meant that anyone could access anything. To censor movies, books and so on was easy because getting the uncensored stuff was difficult. But now it's pointless and a waste of time.

  • @M3646 Its to censor our freedom of speech ..take away peoples rights , same as with the phoney war on terror stuff .. This is really bad .. people need to see the truth and realise there's a monster and its coming our way ..and its coming from the inside .

  • But whats the point? We still have LiveJournal and all those other crap sites where people can whinge and complain.

And I wish people would stop saying @Insertnamehere. Fucks sake guys, I know who you're talking to since I get an email about it.

  • If some want internet filtering and some don't then make it optional.

Internet censorship punishes everyone for an extremely small minority a child pornographers.

It is better to let one guilty man run free than imprison 10 men where only one is gui

    lty

  • They have NetAlert. Conroy said:

"People aren't using it because it isn't mandatory."

We're dealing with someone who knows very little.

  • if they do put this filter on it will be put Australia even further back in technology and it is crazy the government even think the filter will even work

  • Y they didnt broadcast the protest of us against massacre in Gaza by Israel?

  • Yay now child abusers will be forced to use more secure methods of accessing child porn which will mean there will be more of them in the community! This is what happens when fucking idiots try to be the though police.

  • hey why do you have to show chubby geeky looking people ? What like because we're all geeks then we must be freaks hey ?

Since when was that against the law ?

  • This will just be used to control what the public sees and take away what little power they have left.

  • We still have the right to vote, it can be fixed.

  • "Significant community support" Well, I guess 20% isn't INsignificant. My maths tells me that a government shouldn't go against 80% of its citizens to keep 20% happy though.

  • It comes down to scare mongering. As someone on the day said, its Peds under the Bed. Because every man who comes within 50 kilometers of a person under 16 is going to rape them.

Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Conroy couldn't count his balls and get the same answer twice. He's doing this because he doesn't know shit about fuck.

  • Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?

  • ABC is owned by the government fuck this shit

  • The study they refer to is Clive Hamilton's from 2003.

As I understand it, the subject was a opt-in filter for pornography, similar to the existing NetAlert filter. There was an 80% in favor response.

The two main problems with the study: the current filter is opt-out, the internet has evolved since 2003 - and so, you would hope, have a lot of parent's attitudes.

I personally regard it as a study of dubious value within the current debate.

  • It was lazy journalism on the ABC's part to say at the end of the report that "at least one study indicates support for internet filtering". Who? What study? Was the group a broad cross section of church groups? They undermined the whole rally with that throw away line.

  • Agreed. The only study I've heard of indicated that the vast majority did not support a filter.

  • ABC was referring to a 20,000 signature petition submitted on the 19 Oct 06 by Conroy, asking for

"All internet service providers be required to offer a clean feed internet service".

Notice the word OFFER. No mention of it being mandatory.

Youtube wont let me link to it, but it can be found by going on the Parlinfo section of the Australian Parliament website, and searching for Information Technology: Internet Content. A few results will come up, look for the one from the 19th of Oct.

  • The filtering will have two levels. One mandatory, one optional. The optional level will filter out anything not suitable for children. The mandatory filter will filter anything the government decides to filter. This will be another complaints driven system so some dope who doesn't like a site that I do like can complain and have it put on the secret, mandatory list. I won't be able to opt out of this level of filtering. If I can't opt out, it's mandatory. Look for the facts at EFA & IIA.

  • luk3r3volution, I think you misunderstood what I was saying about the petition. The ABC is talking about the petition as if it supports the government's current plan. But the petition only ever asked for ISPs to offer a cleanfeed service, not make it mandatory for all. ISPs already offer such a service to those who want it, so really, that study they refer to has no relevance to the scheme currently in the works. So I completely agree with you when you say it was lazy journalism.

  • Cool. Thanks for clarifying your post for me.

  • They used my underhanded line. Yay!

  • Fantastic work guys. I was there. Next step: city street sit in? They stop our Internet, we stop their cities.

  • Excellent work with the rally - this nonsense about filtering our internet will not be tolerated.
