Wow what an honor it must have been to have such a great conscious artist mention rappers in such high esteem..and i agree Mos Def is definately multi talented and the future..
I'm still devastated GSH passed away.. but hopefully more people will find out how extraordinary GSH was... RIP, your voice will continue to perpetually inspire us all.
A true poet...a genuine, nearly incomparable messenger...a complete musician/composer...an unheralded legend...I hope that TV One has a segment of their series "Unsung" lined up for this man...Blazeradio will reach out to his legacy sometime in early June.
God's grace be with him, his spirit and talent will be dearly missed...
How can someone you don`t know have such a profound affect on your life? This is the question i ask myself after reading of Gil´s Passing.
The last track of the album spirits shoudl be an anthem for all of us who`ve struggled . "don`t give up, its time to stop your falling , you`ve been down long enough , can`t you hear the spirits calling" I will miss the man and the chances to see him play live , but i will always treasure the music R.I.P Gil
I thank my Father for those Sunday morning vinyl playlists while cleaning the house. Rest in peace Gil. You're my mentor. My friend. Legend.... Black Ice.
sad sad sad to see such a giant reduced like this GSH was so brilliant back in the day. The drugs wrecked one of the greatest talents of his generation
@ICEBOXX 4real? I meanU could def be seein sumthin i don't, but I was thinkin almost the opposite as that. lol thats.just how they would want it 4sure, but this dude speaks, and I hear truth..truth n wisdom. And yo, I'm white and what he says JUST MAKES SENSE..at least from a poets point of view; lyrically. "Message to the Messenger" touched on topics and made points that are mad deep, mad true, and mad intelligent, especially in it's delivery. lol That mos def comment sounds MK all the way tho.1
@telemanque first this man was one of my heros but you have to look closely i would never disrespect by judging but i do examine and also you be the one to examine behavior that all im saying
Haha, thanks man! You're one smart dude. I love being captivated and drawn-in by what someone has to say, being afraid to blink in case I miss something important, and especially what that someone represents real black people, not "African American" people or some other stupid shitty pseudo-degenerative label, with all it's hidden connotations.
Peace be unto Gil-Scott Heron.....His thoughts and Ideas still have reasonance in communitities around the country, and that's dope.....Definitely an exemplar in my life....Hope to see him in Chi-town soon.
in a white controlled society, how would you avoid working with or for whites? not all whites are racists, but to ignore racism is as ignorant as being a racist, white racists or black racists.
@miragin7 I can understand that totally. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying the establishment is necessarly a bad thing. It's a stepping stone, or what you make of it. Everyone has to answer to someone, black, white, purple doesn't matter.
Since 1970 I have followed Gil, his career, his music, his spoken words and his mind. Given his use of life & it's rewards, whether positive or negative, what Gil has always done is be honest. Honest with us. Honest with politics. Honest with substance abuse, his or others. More importantly, Gil had learned to be honest with himself. Something most of us will never learn. Knowing Gil, reading & writing poetry as we did in a hotel room, he is & always will be my inspiration. Bless you & Thank U.
Saw him last night in LA...the man sounds GOOD!!! Wonderful show!!! I've seen him perform MANY times over a 25 year period and he sounds as GOOD or BETTER than ever...
@tellyoutomorrow tot agreeed... i had never seen him til last dec. in NY and I was overwhelmed by his show and I think the voice on the nu LP sounds a lot more grainy than what I heard.. i am sure that's what they wanted, which i can c y .
@novembertalespinner His health status is HIS STORY. It is not for us to share. What he IS sharing is a powerful message through his art form. He is a gutsy legend who has the heart of a champion.
Absolutely brilliant. Much Praise to Gil Scott Heron a true Poetic Pioneer. It is a true blessing to see him in good health. His comments regarding Mos Def are as precise and on point of a statement in relation to him being the most important artist since Tupac. His words should be duly noted as he is a man of much experience and wisdom.
He's not exactly in good health, he's HIV positive, but he seems to be doing fine so far. I wish him well in his come back. I was blessed to see him perform live once in Tallahassee, FL. He's a true poet in every sense of the word.
He's 60, born April 1, 1959. He kicked a cocain habit he had for about 15 years. He's also HIV positive. Drugs and alcohol can age you quick. Mos Def is helping him on a comeback for his next album after 14 years. I think the lesson here is for us to be prudent in our lifestyles and make sound health decisions; but
"Father Time" will soon catch us all if we don't die young. Keep doing your thing Gil you are a great poet, one of the best in our time.
LOL 'mI not even sure why... But your comment is funny to me. I can her my father ask me right now "Hey Boy, Hey BOy you Remember that Gill Scott record angel dust?" ME: "Angel WHAT?" "what you say Daddy? Daddy? over here look" My father: " I said Aaaaangel Dust fool, you, YOU, You know what I says BOY!"
I was lucky enough to have seen him at a local concert several years ago. It was an excellent experience! Hopefully, I'll get a chance to see him in his element again!
No he didn't speak of Tupac in the present tense he said: "I think Mos Def is the most important artist since Tupac." He might be old but the man still plays to audiences and still has some good since.
