Rednose, did you get that way from hitting the bottle? If Jap bikes are so damn good, why have they spent the last 20 years trying to copy the look, sound and feel of Harley? If you like your rice-a-sake good for you,but don't try to put down the bike that started it all. If not for Harley all these jap wanna be companies would still be making scooters!I bet it drives you crazy when people hear you ride and ask "if you have a Harley"Isn't it always the 1st question asked? Ever wonder why that is?
Garbage. Who the hell talked you into buying that? Brand new machine and you can watch the gearshift lever already vibing and beating itself up. Be in the shop for repair within 3000 miles. Be another worn out overpriced used POS at 10k miles. Better cut your losses quick.
I don't think people will argue that you could have gotten as faster metric for cheaper, however plenty will argue with you on the value of a Harley, as you insinuated as worthless after 3000 miles.
As a matter of fact, you can buy a sportster, and ride it for a year, then take it back in the dealer ship and get what you paid for it in trade in value. Show me a metric dealer willing to do that.Metrics loose like half their cost value once they drive off the lot.
"Value" is only in the eye of the idiot that's willing to pay for it. Some people think a $5.00 cup of coffee is "value"... I think those people are idiots. Back to the Sportster thing. First off, the sportster is their lowest budget beater they make, thats why this new "trade in" deal is only effective with the sportster, they lose the least amount of money. 2nd, ask yourself why Harley is doing this. It's because sales are down. They'll do anything to keep people making payments on their bikes
Its not that your opinions are wrong, and I can agree with not liking ridiculous mark up on anything, but its not what we the minority think that sells a product for x amount of value. Its whats in the product, and how it is accepted that determines these things.
Fact is the majority of people do accept Harley for what it cost and so forth, as to them selves are getting what they want, and they are willing to pay the cost, no matter the sensibility or structure of your argument.
Its the fact that Harley has been around since 1903, and its "The American Bike". The original as far as most are concerned, even though thats not the case. Its the fact its the single most recognized bike ever built, and no matter what anyone thinks, they will always get a high respect for this reason alone, making the value what people will pay. And what people will pay, is what they are selling for. Its simple marketing survival, and its a fine example of smart business.
The jap bikes lack this intrigue, and it is exactly why they hold no iron against the "rebellion/outlaw spirited people" that ride Harleys, in convincing them otherwise.
Its not about the performance, the speed, or their reliability. As a matter of fact, thats exactly why they survive as strongly as they do. Its beating the odds, the heavy rumble, and the raw feeling they present.
Its the union of man with machine, one that actually feels mechanical and untamed.
Its something that is either born in you, or you grow to respect for what it is.
For example...
I ride horses. I have an awesome trail horse I ride down the road, and even 3 miles to a gas station to get a pack of smokes, and a drink, which might I add is on major roads.
Is it safe? No. Is it efficient? nope.
I could take a car and get there quicker, but would I have enjoyed the experience I got out of that vs what I get out of horse?
Hell no.
Same difference from riding a Harley, or a metric.
Anyhow, sorry to those who don't get it. But this is how it is.
As for the argument with metrics loosing considerable amount of value, take a look at blue book sales of a 2001 metric, and then look at the Harley. You'll see that the Harley is still the winner in this category, which in turn is still making it the better investment thus far.
Oh, and did I mention that the largest club in the world is the Hells Angles, which ride Harleys? Go to their web site and look at how large they are.
Also, I disagree with your comment on how metrics lose "half" their value... Are you crazy??? The reason the Japs, Italians and Germans don't offer these ridiculous trade in scams is because they simply don't have to. Harley is an inferior product in every way, from reliability to quality to build tolerences, thats why the shake and vibe and rattle like you can see in this video. This is a brand new machine, I own a 33y/o Kawi 2stroke triple, the original widow maker and it doesn't vibe this bad
And this is why our economy is horrible, we put great worth on essentially worthless objects like Harleys and Starbucks coffee. C'mon, THINK! How is it possible for any 2 wheeled machine to have a "VALUE" of over 20k or any motorcycle for that matter. Why should any bike be worth more than a $12k Hyundai Accent, there's less moving parts, materials, technology, less labor. Its ridiculous to think a motorcycle cost more than something with four doors, a full interior with glass and 4 wheels.
Well, some buy things for reason, some others for the senses. Two philosophies. The inferior product is only in the eyes of the buyer, in that sense I'm glad to be the owner of a totally superior product. ;)
Nice bike ! I thought my Buell 1125 CR motor was noisy ...Not the exhaust either. Ride safe and continue the Good Times-
